Dynamical modelling of a reactive extrusion process: Focus on residence time distribution in a fully intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder and application to an alginate extraction process ArchiMer
Baron, Regis; Vauchel, Peggy; Kaas, Raymond; Arhaliass, Abdellah; Legrand, Jack.
The context of this study is the modelling of reactive extrusion process based on an alginate extraction protocol. Residence Time Distribution (RTD) is one important part to predict the kinetics of reactive compounds. A simple model is proposed to predict RTD in fully intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders without reaction. This model, which can be easily extended to reactive case in a future work, is based on the extension of an axial dispersion model, including control parameters (screw speed and flow rate) and geometrical parameters (screw profile and die design). Simulations were performed for various operating and geometrical conditions so as to illustrate possibilities offered by the proposed model. Validation was conducted for two different...

Optimisation de procédés innovants pour l'obtention de phycocolloïdes ArchiMer
Vauchel, Peggy.
Alginates are polysaccharides which are naturally present in the cell wall of brown algae and extracted because of their rheological properties. The alginate industry uses an extraction protocol, which central step, the carbonatation, is conducted in batch reactors. It is a high water, reagent and time demanding process. The main objective of this thesis is to optimize the alginate extraction process. A study of the existing process, focused on carbonatation step, enabled to highlight points which could be enhanced to optimize the extraction yield and the quality of extracted alginates. Stirring intensity and algae pieces size have been identified as parameters having an influence on the carbonatation reaction kinetics. A specific analysis on medullar and...

Characterisation of dissolved organic compounds in hydrothermal fluids by stir bar sorptive extraction - gas chomatography - mass spectrometry. Case study: the Rainbow field (36 degrees N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) ArchiMer
Konn, Cecile; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Holm, Nils G..
The analysis of the dissolved organic fraction of hydrothermal fluids has been considered a real challenge due to sampling difficulties, complexity of the matrix, numerous interferences and the assumed ppb concentration levels. The present study shows, in a qualitative approach, that Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) followed by Thermal Desorption - Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) is suitable for extraction of small sample volumes and detection of a wide range of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds dissolved in hydrothermal fluids. In a case study, the technique was successfully applied to fluids from the Rainbow ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal field located at 36 degrees 14'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). We show that...

Purification de la chitine par hydrolyse enzymatique à partir de coproduits de crevette Penaeus vannamei. Caractérisations des produits et optimisation du procédé ArchiMer
Le Roux, Karine.
The objective of this study was to optimize the extraction of chitin by acid proteolysis. The novelty of the method is based on the stabilization of pH by the balance between substrate composition and the acid solvent. This principle allows a simultaneous demineralization and deproteinization, the two main reactions associated with the purification of chitin. To evaluate the performance of this purification, the composition of the substrate and products was characterized. Different methods of quantification of chitin and proteins have been compared. As traditional assays were not satisfaying, a direct method of amino acids determination by gaz chromatography was selected to estimate the amount of protein. The estimate of chitin amount was based on indirect...

Obtención de extracto de café por percolación OceanDocs
Ortega, A.; Borges, P.; Roncal, E.; Rogert, E.; Pino, J. A..

The Forest Sector: Important Innovations AgEcon
Sedjo, Roger A..
Unlike other resources such as petroleum, coal, and copper, forests are renewable. Yet, in many respects forests historically have been treated as a nonrenewable resource in that forest stocks were depleted or "mined" and loggers moved on to exploit other "deposits." The lands were often put to other uses, typically agricultural, or allowed to regenerate naturally. This paper looks at technical change in forest extraction, i.e., logging under a number of different conditions. It finds that, on average, labor productivity has been increasing in recent decades. However, total factor productivity in the US has declined in recent years. In addition, the study examines the tree-growing potential of plantation forestry. It finds that there is underway a...

NUTRIENT DEMAND BY THE CARROT CROP IS INFLUENCED BY THE CULTIVAR Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Aquino,Rosiane Filomena Batista Almeida; Assunção,Natália Silva; Aquino,Leonardo Angelo; Aquino,Priscila Maria de; Oliveira,Guilherme Anthony de; Carvalho,André Mundstock Xavier de.
Farmers must carefully choose the cultivar to be grown for a successful carrot crop. The yield potential of the cultivar may influence nutrient demand and should be known to plan for fertilization application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cultivar effect on carrot yield and on the nutrient content and quantities allocated to leaves and roots. Three experiments were set up in two crop seasons in Rio Paranaíba, MG, Brazil. In the first season, typical summer, 10 summer cultivars were sown. In the second season, summer-winter (transition), two experiments were set up, one with summer cultivars and the other with winter cultivars. The treatments consisted of the carrot cultivars distributed in randomized blocks with four replications. Fresh and...

Aflatoxin removal of peanut meals with aqueous ethanol Scientia Agricola
Fonseca,H.; Regitano-d'Arce,M.A.B..
A preliminary approach to achieve compatible simultaneous extraction of aflatoxin and residual oil from pressed oil meals was conducted to determine the minimum amount of water to be added to ethanol versus necessary time to achieve complete removal of aflatoxin. Commercial anhydrous, 96, 93 and 90°GL ethanol were utilized in trials with Soxhlet extractors. Commercial anhydrous ethanol did not remove aflatoxin completely and the extraction efficiency in minutes was directly proportional to the amount of water present in the ethanol, as expected. Although 96°GL ethanol was efficient, alcoholic strengths between 96 and 99°GL need be evaluated to improve oil extraction, provided they do not decrease aflatoxin removal efficiency.

Criteria for the Extraction of Fish Oil CIGR Journal
BAKO, TANKO; VICTOR, UMOGBAI I; J, AWULU O.
The effect of pre-treatment of mackery (Scomber scombrus) on oil recovery and quality was investigated. Fish oil was extracted using the screw expeller press after heat pre-treatment of the fish sample. The effect of cooking temperatures and cooking times was evaluated. It was observed that the oil yield has a positive relationship with cooking temperature. The oil yield increased with increasing cooking temperature at all the cooking times investigated and also increased with increasing cooking time from 5-15 minutes and then decreased for 20 minutes cooking time at all the cooking temperatures investigated. The results revealed that a highest yield of 22.8 % was obtained when the fish was treated at 90 0C cooking temperature for 15 minutes. The lowest...

Mathematical modeling of mechanical horizontal screw oil extractor CIGR Journal
BAKO, TANKO; ENYI, OBETTA SAMUEL; IMOLEMHE, UMOGBAI VICTOR.
A theory using mechanical expression was proposed from the physics of oil expression in a screw press to characterize a mathematical model. The general oil expression equation was solved for three machine parameters (choke clearances, screw shaft clearances and screw shaft speeds) which simulate the machine parameters effects in the overall screw expeller process. The mathematical model was validated by the experimental data obtained from pressing fish oil with a screw press, using regression analysis. The experimental oil extraction data was fitted to the model and the quality of fit evaluated. A good fit was indicated by correlation coefficient of 0.9983, coefficient of determination of 0.9967, absolute average percentage deviation of 4.8 %, coefficient...

Effect of Expeller Press Parameters on Fish Oil Extraction CIGR Journal
BAKO, TANKO; UMOGBAI, VICTOR I.; OBETTA, SAMUEL E..
An investigation was carried out on the effect of expeller press parameters such as choke clearances (1, 2 and 3 mm), screw clearances (1, 2 and 3 mm) and screw (worm) shaft speeds (50, 60 and 70 rpm) on fish oil extraction. The oil extraction rate and extraction efficiency had a negative relationship with choke clearances and screw clearances but had a positive relationship with screw (worm) shaft speeds. The oil extraction rate and extraction efficiency were found to decrease with increase in choke clearances and also decreased with increase in screw clearances. Increase in screw (worm) shaft speeds from 50 to 70 rpm was observed to increase oil extraction rate and extraction efficiency. The extraction loss had a positive relationship with choke...

Extraction of pectin from apple pomace BABT
Canteri-Schemin,Maria Helene; Fertonani,Heloísa Cristina Ramos; Waszczynskyj,Nina; Wosiacki,Gilvan.
As apple-processing units are now in expansion in Brazil, industrial by-products like pomace play an important role in pectin manufacture. The objective of this article was to determine a pratical follow-up to the extraction of pectin from apple pomace and to characterize it in a laboratory, on a small scale, aiming at establishing the optimum conditions for acid extraction. The highest yields were obtained when [1]apple pomace was dried and ground to obtain an apple flour to be used as raw material, [2] citric or nitric acids were used and [3] when the citric acid concentration was 6.2 g/100 ml and the time of reaction was 153 minutes. The apple variety in itself was not significant in pectin yield. The degree of esterification (DE = 68.84 %) of the...
