The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of maize crops in Brazil. The effects of plant metabolites on the biology and behavior of insects is little studied. The aim of the study was to evaluate the activity of rutin on the biology of the S. frugiperda by using artificial diets containing rutin. The study evaluated four treatments: regular diet (control group) and diets containing 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg g-1 of rutin. The following biological variables parameters of the larvae were evaluated daily: development time (days), larval and pupal weight (g) and viability (%), adult longevity and total life cycle (days). A completely randomized experimental design was used with 25 replication. The rutin flavonoid...

Metodologia para avaliação do efeito de inseticidas sobre Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) na cultura do arroz irrigado Anais da SEB
Martins,José F. S.; Loeck,Alei E.; Botton,Marcos; Carbonari,Jairo J.; Gusmão,Luciana G..
A new methodology to evaluate the effect of insecticides on Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in flooded rice (Oryza saliva) was tested. Artificial infestations with fall armyworm larvae (3rd -4th instars) on rice field plots, fenced by metallic cages was used. Larval mortality was evaluated 48 hours after insecticide application by flooding the rice field and counting the floating surviving insects. Lambdacyalothrin CE (7.5 g/ha) and permethrin CE (25 g/ha) provided high larval control (> 95 %). Cifluthrin CE (7.5 g/ha) and deltamethrin CE (2.0 and 2.5 g/ha) caused less mortality (< 70%). The advantages of this new methodology are discussed.

Cruz,Ivan; Figueiredo,Maria L. C.; Valicente,Fernando H.; Oliveira,António C..
Different concentrations of nuclear polyhedrosis virus were applied as aqueous suspensions using a tractor mounted or a backpack-manual sprayer to control Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) larvae on maize (Zea mays L.). Larval mortality varied with the application equipment. For the tractor-mounted sprayer application of at least 2.5 x 10(12) P.I.B./ha was necessary to attain a control comparable to that obtained with the backpack-manual sprayer application (70.2%). For this application method it can be used the dose of 2.5 x 10(11) PI.B./ ha, butNPV persistence was very short. A greaterNPV persistence was obtained with doses over 1.25 x 10(12) P.I.B./ha (93.4% mortality). The occurrence of parasitoids in the experimental area increased larval mortality rate...

Effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis strains against Spodoptera frugiperda (lepidoptera: noctuidae) BJM
Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Silva,Rogério Fernando Pires da; Fiuza,Lidia Mariana.
The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is one of the most important pests of maize, causing up to 20% production losses when defoliation occurs near to flowering, or even complete destruction of plants. Among the alternatives to control this pest, the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has gained attention due to its efficiency and low impact on natural enemies. Strains Bt dendrolimus HD 37, Bt aizawai HD 68, Bt kurstaki HD 73, Bt darmstadiensis HD 146, and Bt thuringiensis 4412 were tested against second instar larvae in in vivo assays. Suspensions of Bt aizawai HD 68 and Bt thuringiensis 4412, containing 3 x 10(8) cells/ml, induced mortality of 100% and 80.4%, respectively. To test virulence, cell concentrations of 8 x 10(5) to 3 x 10(8) cells/ml of...

Ramos,Vinicius; Alves,Dejane; Braga,Mariana; Carvalho,Geraldo; Santos,Custódio.
The search for alternative methods aiming to the control of agricultural pests that cause less environmental impact has been a recurring theme in several studies. For this purpose, the factors influencing the extraction and isolation of the trypsin inhibitor found in castor-bean (Ricinus communis L.) cake and seeds were studied, and its effect on the development of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith, 1797) was evaluated. Therefore, the type and proportion of the solvent (w/v), extraction period and oil content were evaluated. The castor-bean cake extract with oil content of 20% in water at a ratio 1:40 (w/v) for 30 min showed the greatest trypsin inhibition, with 21.23 mUTI g-1 seed. The isolation of the trypsin inhibitor contained in the extract...

Ocimum basilicum essential oil combined with deltamethrin to improve the management of Spodoptera frugiperda Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Sérgio Macedo; Cunha,João Paulo Arantes Rodrigues da; Carvalho,Stephan Malfitano de; Zandonadi,César Henrique Souza; Martins,Rafael Castro; Chang,Roberto.
ABSTRACT For an important and expensive crop such as corn, the resistance of Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith to various pesticides has led to research throughout the world for a potential insecticide from a natural source. For the management of pest resistance, natural compounds associated with synthetic insecticides can be a promising tool because they can reduce the application of the synthetics molecules while maintaining their effectiveness and promoting the control of the pests. Linalool is a potential insecticide that is easily obtained because it is found in high concentrations in the essential oil of Ocimum basilicum L. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of this essential oil and its combination with deltamethrin to...
