Environmental impact of organic agriculture in temperate regions Organic Eprints
Lynch, D.H.; Halberg, N.; Bhatta, G.D..
Can organic agriculture elaborate a scientifically based, resource-efficien and agroecological approach to low-input farm management? This review examines the literature from temperate regions, with a particular emphasison Canadian and USstudies that relate to environmental and ecological impacts of organic agriculture with respect to (i )soil organic matter storage, (ii) soil quality/soil health, (iii) nutrient loading and risks of off-farm nutrient and agrochemical losses, (iv) biodiversity and (v) energy use and global warming potential. The context and implications of semi-arid conditions and low soil P levels, common to many organic farms in North America, and wide spread adoption of genetically engineered crops in conventional production, is also...

THE EFFECT OF FARMING SYSTEM ON SOIL MICROBIAL HYDROLYTICAL ACTIVITY Organic Eprints
Madsen, Helena; Talgre, Liina; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Sanches De Cima, Diego; Luik, Anne.
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of conventional and organic farming on soil hydrolytic activity (FDA). The experiment consisted of five-field crop rotation with three organic systems: Org 0 without winter cover crops (as control), Org I with winter cover crops and Org II with winter cover crops plus composted manure; and two conventional farming systems: Conv I as control (no fertiliser use) and Conv II (with mineral N). The results show increase of FDA in all systems in 2013. Within the average of 2012-2014 the FDA is the lowest in Conv. I and the highest in Org II system.

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and free-living nitrogen- fixing bacteria on growth characteristics of corn(Zea mays L.) under organic and conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Koocheki, Professor Alireza; Jahan, Instructor Mohsen; Nassiri Mahallati, Associated Prof. Mehdi.
In recent years, biological fertilizers have received special attention in sustainable agriculture. Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria had significant effects on corn photosynthesis and yield; the highest photosynthesis rate and yield were obtained with dual inoculation with fungus plus bacteria. These outcomes were also affected by cropping systems, but to a lesser extent. Therefore in organic and low input cropping systems, a combination of mycorrhiza and free-living bacteria performed satisfactorily.

Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M.; Søegaard, K..
Increasing size of organic dairy farms makes grazing of all cropped land inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley undersown with grass-clover - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize/catch crop - lupin/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five treatments concerning grazing/cutting strategy and manure application. Results shows that herbage production was high in year 1-4 of...

Crop yield, root growth, and nutrient dynamics in a conventional and three organic cropping systems with different levels of external inputs and N re-cycling through fertility building crops Organic Eprints
Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Kristensen, Hanne L..
One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Crop yields were lower in the organic systems (on average 82% of conventional yields), differing among crops, when based on the area grown with main crops....

Engberg, Ricarda M.; Nordentoft, Steen; Riber, Anja B..

Simulating Root Density Dynamics and Nitrogen Uptake – Can a Simple Approach be Sufficient? Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Anders.
The modeling of root growth in many plant–soil models is simple and with few possibilities to adapt simulated root proliferation and depth distribution to that actually found with different crop species. Here we propose a root model, developed to describe root growth, root density and nitrogen uptake. The model focuses on annual crops, and attempts to model root growth of different crop species and row crops and its significance for nitrogen uptake from different parts of the soil volume.

Post-harvest sown catch crops – results from two years of organic field trials Organic Eprints
Madsen, H.K.; Bertelsen, I.; Askegaard, M..
Post-harvest sown catch crops should be sown as early as possible in order to obtain maximum biomass and nutrient uptake in the harvested crop, as biomass production decreased by 2-3.5 percent per day, when time of sowing was postponed throughout August. Furthermore, the winter hardy species included in these experiments had a tendency to yield less than the non-winter hardy catch crops. These experiments imply that early sown catch crops may become a biomass supplement for organic biogas production, provided sufficient yields are obtained and costs for harvest, transportation and storage are adequately low.

Commercial organic fertiliser as supplementary fertilisers in potato crop production Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Weidmann, Gilles; Siegrist, Franziska.
The nitrogen requirement varies depending on variety and usage. The conventional fertilisation amounts to 120 kg of N per ha in table potatoes and potatoes for processing. Early potatoes and seed potatoes require slightly less nitrogen at about 100 kg of N per ha. The nitrogen supply strongly depends on the conditions for N mineralisation (weather, humus content of the soil, preceding crop residues). Thus, optimising the N supply is complex. Nitrogen from the preceding crop: Grain legumes or cereals in combination with green manure are favourable preceding crops. Field peas may leave behind up to 50 kg net weight of available nitrogen, a mixture of grain legumes and barley up to 30 kg. Depending on the preceding crop and the soil, the nitrogen left...

Organic Fertilization In A “Tomato – Pea” Rotation In Southern Italy Organic Eprints
Rinaldi, Michele; Vonella, Alessandro Vittorio; Garofalo, Pasquale.
The use of alternative to mineral fertilizers is an important issue in organic systems. A four-year field experiment to evaluate the effects of organic fertilizers on yield and quality of processing tomato and proteic pea in rotation, was carried out in Southern Italy. The fertilization treatments aimed to supply 100 kg ha-1 of N for tomato and 60 kg ha-1 of P2O5 for pea and were: 1) an organic biological fertilizer (BIO); 2) an experimental compost obtained by olive residues, sludge and straw mixture (COMP); 3) a control managed with traditional chemical fertilizers (ammonium nitrate and perphosphate, MIN). At harvest, the main productive and qualitative parameters were assessed. Tomato fruit yield did not differ among the fertilization treatments, but...

EFFECTS OF ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL N-FERTILIZATION ON QUALITY TRAITS IN CORIANDER (CORIANDRUM SATIVUM L.) Organic Eprints
Carrubba, Alessandra; Catalano, Caterina; Militello, Marcello.
In organic cropping management of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, the best quality expression is crucial to gain satisfactory incomes. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an annual herbaceous plant with a commercial value due to the typical scent of its fruits (commonly termed “seeds”), rich in a pale yellow oil (1-2% in small-sized types, 0.2-0.5% in large-sized ones). Several studies have been done for determining the composition of volatile fraction of Coriander, which was found to vary also as a consequence of cropping techniques, including nitrogen fertilization. In order to gain useful information about the effects, if present at all, of organic N fertilization on Coriander quality in terms of volatiles composition pattern, a three-year trial...
