Fécondités individuelle et par recrue du homard européen Homarus gammarus (L.) des cotes françaises ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon; Raguenes, Gerard.
Several relationships between the fecundity and the weight or the size of females have been studied for three different (based on "eye-index") stages of incubation. The relationship between the average weight of eggs at the beginning of incubation and the size of the females shows that the egg size varies according to the female's size. Loss of eggs during incubation has been studied ; the average loss between the two extreme stages of incubation is around 27%. This is a lowered value of what accurs during the whole incubation period. Egg losses are greater for small females than for big females. The annual frequency of spawning and size at first maturity have been determined in for differents fishing effort than by the commercial size.

Accumulation and mobilization of lipids in relation to reproduction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Zudaire, Iker; Murua, Hilario; Grande, Maitane; Pernet, Fabrice; Bodin, Nathalie.
Total lipid content and lipid class composition were analyzed in gonads, liver and white muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) throughout ovary development to understand its reproductive allocation strategy and to assess the relation between female condition and reproduction. A total of 112 females were collected onboard purse-seiner in the Western Indian Ocean from January to March 2009, from June to July 2009, and from April to May 2010. Gonads were characterized by highly variable total lipid contents ranging from 5 to 27 μg mg−1 of wet weight (ww) with a predominance of neutral lipids, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG) and sterol- and wax-esters. The different lipid classes in gonads described an accumulative pattern through the maturity process...

Responses of European anchovy vital rates and population growth to environmental fluctuations: An individual-based modeling approach ArchiMer
Pethybridge, Heidi; Roos, David; Loizeau, Veronique; Pecquerie, Laure; Bacher, Cedric.
A size-structured, bioenergetics model was implemented to examine the effects of short-term environmental changes on European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, in the North-western Mediterranean Sea. The model approach was based on Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory and details the acquisition and allocation of energy (J d(-1)) during an organisms' full life-cycle. Model calibration was achieved using biometric data collected from the Gulf of Lions between 2002 and 2011. Bioenergetics simulations successfully captured ontogenetic and seasonal growth patterns, including active growth in spring/summer, loss of mass in autumn/winter and the timing and amplitude of multi-batch spawning events. Scenario analysis determined that vital rates (growth and fecundity)...

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 2: fecundity and spawning pattern ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
Batch fecundity and relative fecundity of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean were estimated from seven gravid swordfish females (size range 127-225 cm lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes collected onboard Reunion-based (France) longline swordfish fishing vessels between December 1999 to January 2001. To investigate the spawning pattern of swordfish, we used data collected through a combination of two at sea sampling regimes. A total of 17 007 geo-located size data of swordfish were recorded during 8 years (1993-2001) and a total of 1727 (size range 75-289 cm, LJFL) swordfish gonads (1107 females and 620 males) were sampled from May 1998 to January 2001. The estimated batch fecundity ranged from 995...

Etude experimentale de la maturation ovocytaire chez Pecten maximus et Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Widowati, L; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dorange, G; Le Pennec, M.
To date, it has been impossible to fertilize the oocytes of ripe Pecten maximus obtained by gonad stripping as it is routinely done in hatchery with Crassostrea gigas . The events occurring between artificial induction of spawning and normal fertilization were studied experimentally in order to explain this difference. Fertilization and rearing trials were performed on oocytes obtained from the gonads of both species by scarification, by aspiration from genital ducts (of P. maximus only) and after spawning. Every batch of oocytes was fixed for histological study. Serial sections of the gonad of a fixed spawning P. maximus were made to reveal modifications of the nucleus of the oocytes during their expulsion. In P. maximus the stripped oocytes can be...

Estimating the productivity of Atlantic bluefin tuna from validated scientific data ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Kell, Laurence; Restrepo, Victor.
Estimating the productivity of an exploited marine species is not an easy or a trivial task. In the case of Atlantic bluefin tuna, the productivity can hardly be estimated from the natural mortality rates or the stock recruitment relationships because the former have never been estimated for this species from scientific data, but only “guesstimated”, while the latter remain highly uncertain for both the eastern stock (BFTE) and the western stock (BFTW). To get a better idea of bluefin tuna productivity, we thus applied the approach by Jennings et al. (1998) who proposed a surrogate of r, r’, named the potential rate of population increase. We compared this parameter and age-at-maturity (and to some extent the individual growth curves) of 25 species...

Bonga shad ( Ethmalosa fimbriata ) spawning tactics in an upwelling environment ArchiMer
Baldé, Bocar Sabaly; Döring, Julian; Ekau, Werner; Diouf, Malick; Brehmer, Patrice.
Successful recruitment in small pelagic fish populations inhabiting upwelling zones is subject to variation in fecundity and is driven by spatial and temporal fluctuations in environmental conditions, that is, mainly sea surface temperature, salinity and food availability. These fluctuations in abiotic factors have stimulated small pelagic fish populations to exhibit specifically adapted spawning tactics. To better understand to what extent a short‐lived exploited fish species such as bonga shad Ethmalosa fimbriata has adapted to an upwelling environment, we have investigated the interrelationship between upwelling intensity as a proxy for productivity and population fecundity by means of a virtual population analysis. We found that females of intermediate...

Exploitation, biologie et dynamique du stock de langouste rouge de Corse, Palinurus elephas Fabricius ArchiMer
Marin, Jean.
The European red spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. This fishery was described, its trends from 1981 to 1964 were analysed, and the exploitation conditions of the spiny lobster stock (fishing grounds, strategy and gear ; fishing regulations) were explained. Furthermore, the fishing effort and the yields were estimated through an indirect survey, in 1983 and 1984 . The growth was studied through tagging experiments. Growth increment per moult, Von BERTALANFFY's equation parameters, and moulting frequency were estimated for both sexes. Bias risks associated to tag loss at moulting were also analysed. In addition, estimates of K and L∞ variances were provided through "Jack-knife"...

Anatomy, functional morphology, evolutionary ecology and systematics of the invasive gastropod Cipangopaludina japonica (Viviparidae: Bellamyinae) Naturalis
Bocxlaer, B. Van; Strong, E.E..
The anatomy, functional morphology and evolutionary ecology of the Viviparidae, and the subfamily Bellamyinae in particular, are incompletely known. Partly as a result, genealogical relationships within the family remain poorly understood. Because of this lack in knowledge, few informed hypotheses exist on ancestral states, how differences in body plans between the subfamilies evolved, and how the peculiar biogeographic distribution patterns of viviparids have arisen. Here we document the anatomy, morphology, life history and systematics of Cipangopaludina japonica, a Japanese species that has been introduced into North America, to resolve taxonomic confusion and to improve our understanding of how form and function are related in bellamyines. Anatomical...

Seasonal population dynamics in Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Neotropical Entomology
Gião,Juliana Z.; Godoy,Wesley A.C..
In this study the seasonal variation of fecundity, wing and tibia sizes were investigated in natural populations of Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann) as an attempt to determine the variations in life history of the species associated to seasonality. Specimens of L. eximia were monthly collected in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, during two years and the adult females dissected to estimate fecundity. Body size was estimated by measuring wing and tibia. Fecundity and body size were seasonally analysed. A relatively constant temporal trajectory was found for fecundity, wing and tibia size over twenty-four months. Strong positive correlations between wing and tibia size, fecundity and wing and fecundity and tibia were observed. The maintenance of stable values in L....

Oviposition behavior of Grapholita molesta Busck (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) at different temperatures Neotropical Entomology
Silva,EDB da; Kuhn,TMA; Monteiro,LB.
Cultivation of temperate-climate fruits is economically important for Brazil. Grapholita molesta Busck is a pest that causes damage to apples, peaches, plums, and pears growing in different micro-regions of southern Brazil, and understanding its reproductive behavior is essential to develop control strategies. The objective of this study was to ascertain the influence of different temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, and 25ºC) on the oviposition behavior of G. molesta. Females of G. molesta were placed in individual plastic containers, and the pre-oviposition period and the number of eggs laid were assessed until adult death. Temperature influenced the pre-oviposition period, and females kept at 22º were the first to lay their eggs. Oviposition occurred over a...

Carvalho,Alessandra R.; Bueno,Vanda H.P.; Pedroso,Elizabeth C.; Kon,Leonardo I.; Diniz,Alexandre J.F.; Silva,Robson J..
Several species of Orius Wolff are used in biological control of thrips in protected cultivations in temperate regions, but some of them show reproductive diapause, compromising the efficiency of these agents of biological control. There are no reports on the biology of the neotropical species Orius thyestes Herring under different environmental conditions. The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of photoperiod on reproduction and longevity of this predator. Nymphs were kept in petri dishes in climatic chambers at 28 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and under the photoperiods of 12L:12D, 11L:13D, 10L:14D e 09L:15D. Reproductive activity and recruitment of the yellow-mandi Pimelodus maculatus (Teleostei: Pimelodidae) in the Igarapava Reservoir, Grande River, Southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Maia,Bruno Pereira; Ribeiro,Sandra Maria Franco; Bizzotto,Paula Maciel; Vono,Volney; Godinho,Hugo Pereira.
The catfish yellow-mandi, Pimelodus maculatus, is a valuable sporting and commercial fish of inland waters of Southeast Brazil including Igarapava Reservoir. It is a short-distance migrant that needs shorter stretches of free-flowing river to spawn compared to other Neotropical migrants. Igarapava Reservoir is one the 13 hydroelectric reservoirs, arranged in a cascade fashion, impounding the 1,300 km-long Grande River, SE Brazil. In this paper, we examined reproductive features and recruitment of the yellow-mandi in Igarapava Reservoir. We also evaluated the role of the Igarapava Fish Ladder (IFL) built around Igarapava Dam on the sustainability of its fisheries. Female adult yellow-mandis that were gill netted (nets of 8-20 cm stretch-mesh) during the...

Reproductive life history of Heterandria bimaculata (Heckel, 1848) (Poeciliinae: Poeciliidae) in the Honduran interior highlands: trait variation along an elevational gradient Neotropical Ichthyology
Olinger,Charles T.; Peoples,Brandon K.; Frimpong,Emmanuel A..
Abstract This study examined reproductive traits and growth rates of Heterandria bimaculata (Poeciliidae) in Cusuco National Park (CNP), a cloud forest reserve in northern Honduras, Central America. In CNP, H. bimaculata occurs in the absence of other fish species and major invertebrate predators along an approximately 1000 m elevation gradient. This allowed for the examination of trait variation along the gradient without the confounding effects of interspecific interactions or habitat patchiness. Heterandria bimaculata exhibited traits characteristic of a low-predation environment: balanced sex ratio, slow growth, late maturity and large female size. Females produced more, smaller eggs from upstream to downstream, but overall reproductive allocation...
