Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) larvae were fed Brachionus cultured on Chlorella and, as soon as ingestion was possible, different types of Artemia , i.e., nauplii of the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain, Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain or GSL nauplii that had been bioencapsulated with an emulsion containing high levels of the omega3-HUFAs (highly unsaturated fatty acids) 20:5 and 22:6. San Francisco Bay Artemia with a good natural fatty acid profile and small body size could be offered earlier than the larger but HUFA-poor Great Salt Lake strain. The poor nutritional quality of the latter, however, could be corrected by enriching the nauplii with an omega3-HUFA... |

Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown Artemia which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched Artemia biomass.... |

Two Artemia species (Artemia franciscana, GSL strain and a population from Artemia sinica, ARC No. 1188) were enriched with two different emulsions containing high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (23 and 44% of total fatty acids, respectively) in filtered seawater (30 ppt) at 28°C. After enrichment nauplii were starved for 72h at three different temperatures (6.1, 12.2 and 22°C). Following enrichment the DHA content and DHA/EPA ratio reached a maximum 41.2 and 42.8 mg g-1 dry weight and 1.88 and 2.09 in A. franciscana and A. sinica, respectively. During starvation at 12.2°C the DHA content in A. franciscana... |

The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Similarly, no major differences in the lipid composition of the midgut gland, ovaries and muscle tissue of females could be detected. Results... |

The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with Artemia , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( Artemia only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received Artemia exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did... |

In the frame work of a PhD thesis dealing with the use of artificial diets as an algal substitute for mollusks, the Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, Belgium) is organizing an inquiry which aims at drawing up an inventory of algal substitutes, their cost and applications, and their relative importance and cost-efficiency compared to live algae. The questionnaire has been sent to more than 200 people who are involved in the practice of culturing bivalves. The results will be treated as part of the PhD work and a free copy of the resulting report will be sent to all those who are returning the form. The questionnaire will be presented at Aquaculture Europe 1991 in Dublin under the form of a poster. The... |
