The beginning of life of a new human being from the scientific biological perspective and its bioethical implications Biol. Res.
Ventura-Juncá,Patricio; Santos,Manuel J.
The issue of when the human life begins is a very important subject since it has a significant impact on the decisions that we have to take in relation to human beings in development, particularly human embryos. In this article we discuss some of the more relevant biological evidence supporting the fact that beginning human life begins unquestionably at fertilization and the bioethical consequences.

The effect of cigarette smoke on fertilization and pre-implantation development: assessment using animal models, clinical data, and stem cells Biol. Res.
Talbot,Prue; Lin,Sabrina.
Numerous studies have repeatedly shown that women who smoke experience problems establishing and maintaining pregnancies, and recent work has further demonstrated that the in utero effects of smoke may not be manifested until months or even years after birth. The purpose of this review is to examine the recent literature dealing with the effects of cigarette smoke on the earliest stages of human prenatal development. Studies in this area have included the use of animal models, patients undergoing in vitro fertilization, and embryonic stem cell models. Events leading to fertilization, such as cumulus expansion, hyperactivation of sperm motility, and oocyte pick-up by the oviduct are all impaired by smoke exposure in animal models. Steps crucial to...

Cysteine-Rich Secretory Proteins (CRISP) and their role in mammalian fertilization Biol. Res.
Cohen,Débora J; Maldera,Julieta A; Weigel Muñoz,Mariana; Ernesto,Juan I; Vasen,Gustavo; Cuasnicu,Patricia S.
Epididymal protein CRISPI is a member of the CRISP (Cysteine-RIch Secretory proteins) family and is involved in sperm-egg fusion through its interaction with complementary sites on the egg surface. Results from our laboratory have shown that this binding ability resides in a 12-amino-acid region corresponding to a highly conserved motif of the CRISP family, named Signature 2 (S2). In addition to this, our results revealed that CRISP1 could also be involved in the previous step of sperm binding to the zona pellucida, identifying a novel role for this protein in fertilization. As another approach to elucidate the participation of CRISP1 in fertilization, a mouse line containing a targeted disruption of CRISP1 was generated. Although CRISP1-deficient mice...

Soil chemical attributes and energetic potential of agricultural residual biomasses provided by 23-year soil management Bragantia
Pierri,Letícia de; Pauletti,Volnei; Barth,Gabriel; Motta,Antônio Carlos Vargas; Silva,Dimas Agostinho da; Roza,Luciano Antunes da; Saudade,Cesar Augusto Schmid.
ABSTRACT Residual biomass from grains has potential as an energetic source. Biomass composition determines this potential and is related to plant nutrition, which may vary according to soil fertility. The aim of this 23-year field study was to evaluate changes in chemical attributes of a Brazilian Oxisol and in the energetic potential of oat (Avena sativa L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) residual biomasses provided by tillage systems and fertilizer rates. The trial was performed since 1989, assessing soil chemical attributes in no-tillage (NT), conventional (CT), minimum (MT) and no-tillage plus chisel plough (NT+CP), with two fertilizer rates (normal and reduced, since 1994). Oat and soybean (2012/2013) residual biomasses were collected and...

Sperm and Egg Jelly Coat from Sea Urchin Lytechinus variegatus Collected in Rio de Janeiro Contain Distinct Sialic Acid-Rich Polysaccharides BABT
Valle,Gabrielle M.; Cinelli,Leonardo P.; Todeschini,Adriane R.; Brito-Gitirana,Lycia de; Vilela-Silva,Ana-Cristina E.S.; Mourão,Paulo A.S..
This work found the occurrence of a distinct sialic acid-rich polysaccharide in the sperm surface of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus, which differed significantly from a similar molecule found in the egg jelly. The sperm polysaccharide extracted by protease digestion was purified using anion exchange chromatography and characterized using agarose gel electrophoresis, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. This polysaccharide was highly sulfated and composed almost exclusively of N-acetylneuraminic acid. In contrast, the sialic acid-rich polysaccharide from the egg jelly was composed of N-glycolylneuraminic acid and contains several other hexoses in its structure. This new molecule could help to characterize in further detail the...

Regionalization of oviducts in Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) (Acari: Ixodidae) and its potential significance for fertilization BJB
GARCÍA-FERNÁNDEZ,C.; GARCIA,S. M. L.; SCHNEIDER,F. L.; SEVERINO,A. G.; WINKELMANN,E. C..
The structural analysis of oviducts in Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in different stages of ingurgitation has indicated that they are constituted primarily of an internal cylinder and an external cylinder with different cell types being found between them. Copulated females in active ingurgitation process show typical variations along the internal cylinder, and three regions can be defined: anterior, ring-like and transitional. Based on such regionalization, hypotheses were raised about where and how fertilization takes place, a process yet to be clarified for the acari.

A carbohydrate-based mechanism of species recognition in sea urchin fertilization BJMBR
Mourão,P.A.S..
In the present review, we describe a systematic study of the sulfated polysaccharides from marine invertebrates, which led to the discovery of a carbohydrate-based mechanism of sperm-egg recognition during sea urchin fertilization. We have described unique polymers present in these organisms, especially sulfated fucose-rich compounds found in the egg jelly coat of sea urchins. The polysaccharides have simple, linear structures consisting of repeating units of oligosaccharides. They differ among the various species of sea urchins in specific patterns of sulfation and/or position of the glycosidic linkage within their repeating units. These polysaccharides show species specificity in inducing the acrosome reaction in sea urchin sperm, providing a clear-cut...

Interactions between intracellular Ca2+ stores: Ca2+ released from the NAADP pool potentiates cADPR-induced Ca2+ release BJMBR
Chini,E.N..
Cells possess multiple intracellular Ca2+-releasing systems. Sea urchin egg homogenates are a well-established model to study intracellular Ca2+ release. In the present study the mechanism of interaction between three intracellular Ca2+ pools, namely the nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP), the cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) and the inositol 1',4',5'-trisphosphate (IP3)-regulated Ca2+ stores, is explored. The data indicate that the NAADP Ca2+ pool could be used to sensitize the cADPR system. In contrast, the IP3 pool was not affected by the Ca2+ released by NAADP. The mechanism of potentiation of the cADPR-induced Ca2+ release, promoted by Ca2+ released from the NAADP pool, is mediated by the mechanism of Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release. These data...

Effect of nitrogen on achene protein, oil, fatty acid profile, and yield of sunflower hybrids Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ali,Amjed; Ullah,Sami.
Seed yield and achene oil yield are the main determinants for N application rates rather than seed composition. Nitrogen plays a critical role in producing unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acids), which are the main factors determining sunflower oil quality (Helianthus annuus L.). Studies were conducted on the effect of N fertilization on seed yield, achene oil yield, and quality parameters of sunflower hybrids for two successive years (2010 and 2011) in a split plot arrangement under a randomized complete block design. The hybrids (Hysun-33 & S-278) and N levels (0, 75, 150, and 225 kg ha-1) were allotted in main and sub-plots, respectively. Increasing N levels resulted in steady increases in yield, protein contents and linoleic acid,...

Effect of soil depth and increasing fertilization rate on yield and its components of two durum wheat varieties Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hirzel,Juan; Matus,Iván.
Agronomic practices, climatic variables, and soil conditions are key factors in crop productivity. Although the effects of soil chemical properties and water and agronomic crop management are known, there is little information about effective soil depth and its influence on crop productivity. Since most crop fertilization systems are based on the productive potential associated with climatic conditions and chemical properties of the first 20 cm of soil depth, the objective of this study was to determine the importance of effective depth in terms of increasing fertilization rates on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) productivity. Two experiments were conducted in the 2006-2007 season in the Santa Rosa Experimental Station (71°54' S, 36°31' W,...

Coating seeds with fertilizer: A promising technique for forage crop seeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Baroni,Danilo Força; Vieira,Henrique Duarte.
ABSTRACT Fertilization is not a common management practice at pasture establishment in Brazil. Seed coating technology can be a useful approach to ensure the availability of nutrients to plants during the early stages of development. Thus, the objective of this work was to investigate the incorporation of liquid fertilizer in seeds of Stylosanthes and to evaluate the effect of this technology on seed quality. Mastermins® fertilizer was applied to the last layer of the binder material coating on the seed and Polyseed 76F polymer adhesive was thereafter applied onto the fertilizer. Physiological and biometric analyses of the seeds were carried out. Six fertilizer doses (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mL.100 g seeds-1) were tested, with and without adhesive. The...

Cattle manure and N-urea in radish crop (Raphanus sativus) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mendoza Cortez,Juan W; Cecílio Filho,Arthur B; Coutinho,Edson L; Alves,Anarlete.
This work was carried out in Jaboticabal (575 m altitude, 21°15΄ 22˝ S and 48° 15΄ 58˝ W), São Paulo, Brazil, aiming to investigate the effects of cattle manure and nitrogen (urea) doses on radish height and yield. Randomized blocks were used with a 2x4x4 factorial scheme and 3 replications. The treatments were combinations of cultivars (25 and 19), cattle manure doses (0, 25, 50, and 75 t ha-1 dry basis) and N doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1). Increased cattle manure and urea doses provided higher plant height and commercial yield in both cultivars, but the N produced more signifcant effects than the cattle manure. The maximum commercial yield of cultivar (cv) 19 (20.34 t ha-1) was obtained using 75 t ha-1 of cattle...

Management, production, and nutritional characteristics of cup-plant (Silphium perfoliatum) in temperate climates of southern Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pichard,Gastón.
There is little information known about the response of cup-plant (Silphiumperfoliatum L.), a perennial forage crop introduced to Chile, to differing cultivation practices. A series of studies was conducted to evaluate the adaptation and productivity of cup-plant across a range of plant densities (104,000 - 208,000 plants ha-1), cutting stages (early vegetative to seed formation), and different levels of N (0 - 400 kg N ha-1) and P (0 - 400 kg P2O5 ha-1) fertilization. Field experiments (40°S 73°W) were conducted over a 3-yr period in a subhumid, Mediterranean climate on three distinct andisols that originated from volcanic ash, with pH values of 5.2 to 5.6. The forage dry matter yield, plant components (stem count, stem diameter, plant height, and...

Stem and soil CO2 efflux responses of Pinus radiata plantations to temperature, season, age, time (day/night) and fertilization Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Watt,Michael S.
Stem CO2 efflux is a highly variable component of the carbon budget of forest ecosystems. It reflects the balance between the CO2 respired by the living stem tissues, less the CO2 dissolved in the xylem sap moving upward in the transpiration stream, plus the CO2 transported from the roots and released at the stem. Although knowledge about such fluxes at different spatial and temporal scales has markedly increased, knowledge of the effects of silviculture treatments, such as fertilization, on stem CO2 effluxes are still limited, particularly when connecting above- and belowground processes. Using measurements obtained from twin plots (one control, one fertilized) installed in five-, 12- and 23-year-old stands of Pinus radiata, the objective of this study...

Salinity on artificial reproduction of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) Ciência Rural
Martins,Gabriel Bernardes; Piedras,Sérgio Renato Noguez; Pouey,Juvêncio Luís Osório Fernandes; Bongalhardo,Denise Calisto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Attempting to improve reproduction performance and ichthyo prophylaxis, this study evaluated the effects of maintaining silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) broodstock in different saline concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8‰) on gametes quality and reproductive viability. The results showed that sperm percent motility did not change between 0 and 4‰, but it was reduced at 6‰, and sperm became immotile at 8‰ salinity. Sperm motility time was increased (almost five fold) at 6‰. Salinities up to 4‰ prevented fertilization and hatching, proving their deleterious effects on oocytes and embryos. Therefore, media up to 4‰ salinity may be an alternative for icthyo prophylaxis, although fertilization and incubation must be done in freshwater medium
