La pêcherie du tourteau Cancer pagurus sur les cotes de Bretagne Sud : déplacements, croissance, reproduction ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
Targeted fishing of the edible crab Cancer pagurus has progressively replaced that of overfished lobster and spiny lobster stocks. Over the past few years it has become a significant activity for small-scale fishing vessels from various harbours on the Channel and the Atlantic French coast. Official figures show that national landings amounted to 10,000 tonnes in 1980. In spite of this fishery being recent, drops in yield in some areas have brought about changes in the way it is exploited, with more distant fishing grounds and redeployments. This doctoral thesis study was conducted in relation with the Scientific and Technical Institute of Maritime Fisheries (ISTPM), contributing to the implementation of a rational edible crab management policy....

Les petites pêches côtières et estuariennes Françaises du sud du golfe de Gascogne. Typologie des flottilles et approche socio-économique et commerciale ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
The European contract PECOSUDE (Small inshore fisheries of the south of Europe) accepted in 2000 for 2 years concerns French, Spanish and Portuguese partners. The aim is to assess the inshore and estuarine fisheries from Loire estuary to Portugal. Three levels of study are considered : fisheries (data 1999), socioeconomy and marketing (data 1999 or 2000). Exploitation in the 12 miles area for France and on continental shelf for northern Spain and Portugal (within 1000 m depth), as well as the fishing period lower than 96 hours was determined as the definition of this fishery for the study. Socioeconomic analyses are made only on boats smaller than 15 m. The fisheries part analyses the activity of the fishing vessels taking into account gears used, landed...

Integration of bioenergetics in an individual-based model to hindcast anchovy dynamics in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Bueno-pardo, Juan; Petitgas, Pierre; Kay, Susan; Huret, Martin.
The population of European anchovy of the Bay of Biscay collapsed at the beginning of the 21st century, causing the closure of its fishery between 2005 and 2010. In order to study both the human and environmental causes of the anchovy population dynamics, an approach coupling individual bioenergetics to an individual-based model was applied between 2000 and 2015. This modelling framework was forced with outputs from a physical–biogeochemical model. In addition to a base-case scenario with realistic forcing, alternative scenarios were run without inter-annual variability in either fishing mortality or environmental conditions. During the decrease in population biomass, a high fishing pressure coincided with a combination of environmental variables promoting...

A new approach to recruitment overfishing diagnosis based on fish condition from survey data ArchiMer
Ordines, Francesc; Lloret, Josep; Tugores, Pilar; Manfredi, Chiara; Guijarro, Beatriz; Jadaud, Angelique; Porcu, Cristina; Gil De Sola, Luis; Carlucci, Roberto; Sartini, Marina; Isajlovic, Igor; Massutti, Enric.
A new approach to recruitment overfishing diagnosis is presented. We hypothesize that condition of recruits should increase when recruitment failures are caused by fishing activity. This would be a consequence of the increase in trophic resource availability, because the population is smaller than that which the ecosystem could support. Temporal series of hake recruit condition were calculated from MEDITS survey data collected in Mediterranean geographical sub-areas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 and 19 from 1994 to 2015. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyse the relationship between mean annual condition and abundance of recruits and climatic indices in each GSA. Significant correlations were only detected in GSA 6, where 69% of condition variability was...

Pêche de la langouste rouge Palinurus elephas en france. Eléments pour fixer une taille marchande ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Noel, Philippe.
From the end of XIX century to the 1950', spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) fishing has been an important economical activity for potters of Brittany and led to landings over two thousands tons. Later, impoverishment of traditional fishing grounds and closure, to French fleet, of foreign fishing area obliged a reconversion of potters toward crabs (edible crab and spider crab). Recently in the 80', development of a netting activity has restarted catches of spiny lobster (at a modest scale). Presently, the only reglementary measure concerning this species/metier is a national minimum legal size (total length) but European Commission has wished that a European MLS would be established. In that aim, this paper presents the main features of spiny lobster...

Prospection et peche de la crevette profonde Pandalus borealis au large des cotes de Terre-Neuve et de Nouvelle-Ecosse. ArchiMer
Fontaine, Bernard; L'Herrou, Roger; Decamps, Philippe; Paturel, Bernard.
To assess the potential fishery for Pandalus borealis, the R/V `CRYOS' made cruises, in 1970 off SW Newfoundland and in 1971 off Nova Scotia. The trenches where Pandalus is found and the 3 types of trawl (large mouth, balloon and flat) are described. Details of size of catches and of individuals, and also of fish species caught are given. Prawn stocks in these grounds seem to match those of grounds already being exploited. Significant fish catches may also be expected (e.g. skate, herring and cod). Canadian type trawlers of ~ 65 ft would be suitable to exploit this fishery.

The influence of fiscal regulations on investment in marine fisheries: A French case study ArchiMer
Le Floc'H, Pascal; Daures, Fabienne; Nourry, Myriam; Thebaud, Olivier; Travers, Muriel; Van Iseghem, Sylvie.
Analysing investment drivers in fisheries is essential in understanding the long-term development of fishing capacity. This paper addresses the drivers of investment in the French commercial fishing fleets operating along the Atlantic coast, and the role of public policies have had on investment. First, we examine the changes in the capital value of the fleet, which was strongly impacted by decommissioning schemes during the nineties. We then examine drivers of investment using an unbalanced panel data set describing the investment decisions of a sample of firms over the period 1994-2004. In addition to economic variables, the estimated models account for other factors that may have an impact on investment behaviour, including the different career phases...

Évolution de l'écosystème pélagique du Golfe de Gascogne pendant la période 1990-2003. Conséquences sur la capturabilité des espèces ArchiMer
Villalobos, Hector.
Several small pelagic fish species contribute remarkably to world catch. Their populations are, however, characterized by large biomass fluctuations strongly affecting fisheries. The fishing gears and methods used to capture small pelagics have evolved to exploit the highly developed shoaling behavior of these species. Hence, faced to modern fishing this gregarious behavior becomes a disadvantage for fish. Fish behavior may be affected by environmental conditions and by fishing, at the same time that behavior impacts fishing. In this study, we seek to characterize the aggregative systems of small pelagic fishes inhabiting the Bay of Biscay by analyzing "acoustic images", defined as the group of echoes (planktonic layers, shoals, isolated targets) detected...

A comparison of economic performance in the fisheries sector: A short- and long-term perspective ArchiMer
Le Floc'H, P.; Daures, Fabienne; Brigaudeau, Cecile; Bihel, J..
Indicators of the economic performance of fishing vessels are frequently computed in various countries. In this paper, we use different types of information to assess capital value and the economic performance of fishing vessels. On the one hand, field surveys provide technical and financial information on the main components of fishing capital. On the other hand, book values are given in bookkeeping databases. Both sources of information on fishing capital are used for the same set of vessels, namely the commercial fishing fleet of the French region of Brittany. Based on these two sources, measures of economic performance can be produced for the short term using gross surplus; and for the long term including the cost of capital. The measures of...

An end-to-end model to evaluate the sensitivity of ecosystem indicators to track fishing impacts ArchiMer
Halouani, Ghassen; Le Loc'H, François; Shin, Yunne-jai; Velez, Laure; Hattab, Tarek; Romdhane, Mohamed Salah; Ben Rais Lasram, Frida.
In order to assist fisheries managers, ecological indicators are needed to evaluate the effects of fishing activities on marine ecosystems and to improve communication of these effects in both public and scientific contexts. Finding appropriate indicators is challenging given the complexity of marine food webs as well as the ecosystem response to fishing pressure. In this study, an end-to-end model developed in the Gulf of Gabes ecosystem (Tunisia) was used to compare the performance of a set of ecosystem indicators in assessing the impact of fishing. This end-to-end model aimed to represent the ecosystem functioning by coupling two existing sub-models, the multispecies individual-based model OSMOSE, representing the dynamics of exploited species and the...

Incidences des épisodes d'efflorescences de micro algues toxiques sur les écosystèmes et sur les pêcheries de coquillages en baie de Douarnenez ArchiMer
Thebaud, Olivier; Veron, Gerard; Fifas, Spyros.
The commercial fishery for wedge clam, or telline (Donax trunculus) in the bay of Douarnenez in France started in the early 1980ies. During twenty years, the activity has developed, from an opportunistic fishery, into a regular fishing enterprise for 36 fishermen, who derive from it most, if not all, of their revenue. The fishery is nowadays strictly regulated. It is subject to natural variations in the productivity of clam stocks, in relation with meteorological conditions which can strongly affect the stocks. The bay of Douarnenez has been experiencing regular blooms of harmful algae, both of species leading to shellfish poisoning for human consumption, such as Dinophysis (Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning) and Pseudo-nitzschia (Amnesic Shellfish...

Le caractère territorial des attractions touristiques liées aux pêches maritimes : une illustration par le modèle du panier de biens ArchiMer
Pocheau, Chloé; Alban, Frederique; Le Floc H, Pascal; Legouvello, Raphaela.
The question addressed in this article focuses on the conditions for strengthening the territorial character of tourist attractions around a fishing port with a strong identity. In the face of the depletion of resources, the territories dependent on the exploitation of living marine resources try reconversions during the 1990s, especially towards tourism. The article is based on the fishing port of Guilvinec on which has been created an exhibition center for a large audience. The survey methodology is mobilized to delimit the territory on which the fishing activities and the exhibition center are attractive. An estimate of the expenses incurred by visitors is proposed. The tourist’s consumption of the exhibition center and fisheries is in line with the...

Evaluation du stock de palourdes du bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
Bertignac, Michel; Auby, Isabelle; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Foucard, Julie; Martin, Sophie.
As part of a larger project financed by the European Union programme "Community initiative PESCA" on the study of "small scale fisheries" in Aquitaine (France), an estimation of the stock of clams in the Bassin d'Arcachon has been conducted. A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The clam Tapes philippinarum, which appeared in the basin following a series of aquaculture experiments in the mid eighties, is now the main species accounting for more than 90% of the abundance and the biomass, largely overcoming the European species Tapes decussata. The mean abundance and biomass (26 clams / m2 et l28g / m2) are above those estimated in...

Population and reproductive parameters of the red-tailed catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus (Pimelodidae: Siluriformes), from the Xingu River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Freitas,Tiago Magalhães da Silva; Montag,Luciano Fogaça de Assis.
ABSTRACT A field study of the sex ratio, length-weight ratio, body size at first gonadal maturation, and the breeding season of the red-tailed catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, was carried out in the region of the middle Xingu River in the eastern Amazon basin. The fish were sampled quarterly from September 2012 to January 2014 using gillnets and long lines. The sex ratio was balanced, and while males and females were similar in standard length, the females were heavier than the males, on average. The males presented negative allometric growth, and the females, isometric growth. The estimated size at first maturity was 77.8 cm. The variation in the gonadosomatic index and the greater frequencies of mature specimens indicated a reproductive peak at...

Parturition time for the Blacktip shark, Carcharhinus limbatus (Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae), in Southwestern Atlantic Neotropical Ichthyology
Santander-Neto,Jones; Yokota,Leandro; Meneses,Thiago Silveira de.
Abstract The determination of the period of parturition and identification of nursery areas are fundamental for the management and conservation of a fishing resource. Through combination of monthly abundance, length measurements, and development time of embryos we inferred about parturition time of the Blacktip sharks, Carcharhinus limbatus, from Southwestern Atlantic. Specimens of C. limbatus were caught from 2002 and 2008 by artisanal fleets from three different locations along the Brazilian coast using gillnets (mesh width ranging between 30 and 120 mm between opposite knots and operating from 9 to 120 m in depth), handlines (19 to 140 m depth) and longlines (6 to 90 m depth). Through a comparative analysis of fisheries landing data collected, we have...
