OceanDocs
Giussi, A.R..
Long tailed hake Macruronus magellanicus, is a demersal fish, distributed in the SW Atlantic Ocean, in Malvinas Current waters, from 36° and 55°S, mainly between 50m and 200m depth. The species is also distributed in Chilenian waters in the Pacific Ocean, being caught in the Magellan Strait and the Beagle Channel. Age determination was estimated with the sagittae otoliths, in which only one ring is formed during the year. Growth parameters were calculated directly and with back calculated methodology, no differences were observed between the results. Differences in growth sexes were evident from 3 years old. The oldest age observed was 13. Different distributional areas of adults through out the year could suggest a migratory movement in northern waters of...

OceanDocs
Villarino, M.F.; Aubone, A..
The total length distribution of pink cuskeel Genypterus blacodes catches is difficult to obtain. On the contrary, it is easy to have access to the head length distribution. So, the purpose of this study was to obtain a relationship between a certain head measurement and total length to estimate the length distribution of the catches. Individuals were obtained from bottom-trawl surveys between 39°-47°S and the San Jorge Gulf of the Argentine sea. Sets of measurements of total length (LT), maxillar length (Lmax), head length (Lc),orbital length (Lo), preorbital length (Lpo) and head length-total length ratio (r=Lc/LT) by sex were obtained. The total length was estimated with a regression model using the head length as independent variable. No significant...

Acoustic surveys on the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Madirolas, A..
Two joint Argentine-British acoustic surveys specifically targeted on the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) were carried out during September 1994 and 1995. The surveys confirmed the existence of a spawning concentration area located south from San Carlos Strait, in waters south of Malvinas Islands, ASW. The obtained point estimates of blue whiting abundance were 84801 t for the 1994 survey and 140953 t for the 1995 survey. The surveys also provided information on the school structure and behavior as well as some clues about the complex migration pattern of the species.

Noviembre, 1994 OceanDocs
Lasta, C.A..
The Coastal Project developed at the INIDEP (Mar del Plata,Argentina) offers an analysis on the operative modality of coastal assessment surveys, proposing an information process useful to standardize data collection and processes of future surveys. The efficiency of the evaluation of strata used until the year 1993 was analyzed and a new stratification is proposed. The aim was to define area-strata of importance for the main coastal species, using the traditional stratification of the coastal ecosystem and the mew methodology. The reason for redefining strata is that a decrease was been detected in the number of traditional species and an increment on the biomass of non-commercial species and, associated with it, the development of new explotation areas....

Results of a spiny lobster survey around Mahe Island during September and October 1991 OceanDocs
Bautil, B.R.R..
Spiny lobster fishing in the Seychelles is an artisanal done essentially by skin divers operating at night in the shallow waters surrounding by the islands. Because of human population distribution lobster fishing grounds are concentrated on the inner granitic islands. In September 1992, a random stratified samoling program was set up to gather biological information from the entire granitic Mahe plateau. Direct census of fishery resources by Scuba divers swimming underwater transects was selected as the most feasible and expedient means by which to enact the Resource Survey. This report present partial result gathered for the survey around Mahe Island only and provides an estimate of the Maximum sustainable yield for the granitic plateau by extrapolation...

A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Lasta, C.A.; Guerrero, R.A..
Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each...

Angelescu, V.A.; Sánchez, R.P..
A detailed analysis is presented of the main contributions both local and international to the fields of oceanography and fishery sciences resulting from exploratory cruises carried out on the continental shelf off Argentina and the adjacent oceanic basin of SW Atlantic over the last 100 years. The end of the 19th century is chosen as starting point for this analysis as it marks the beginning of active marine research by Argentine scientists and an accumulation of information on Antarctic and Subantarctic marine organisms in foreign journals. Mention is also made to previous contributions derived from the classic expeditions and global circumnavigation voyages during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the aims of those were not always strictly...

Cordo, H.D..
The structure and abundance of Ling spawning stock were analized from basic biological and oceanographic data recorded during research surveys carried out by INIDEP between 1995 and 2000, to assess the juveniles fraction of common hake stock (January) and of Argentine patagonian squid (February). Jointly both surveys covered the main spawning area of Ling between 44º S and 48º S and approximately between the mouth of San Jorge Gulf (60º W) and 200 m isobath (65º 30’ W) during the summer season (mid-December to mid-March). Size structures and maturity stages confirmed the presence of a spawning unit in the area covered by the surveys. This enabled the estimate of an annual index of Ling spawning stock abundance. Abundance shows a decreasing trend since...
