In order to provide economic indicators for fisheries, analysis of contribution and economic dependencies of the Bay of Biscay fishing fleets to major commercial species catching in the ICES VIII area is conducted. 9 species are considered (regarding the importance of their landings in this area): Sole, Norway Lobster, Sea bass, Hake, Anglerfish, Anchovy, Sardine, Cuttlefish and Monkfish. The landings data are provided by the Harmonie database of the Fisheries Information System of Ifremer and the analysis per specie is done for the 2005 year on one side and over the period 2000-2005 on the other side. A stock slip is built for each species and presents : - Key figures on landings in the Bay of Biscay (total landings, average price, number of vessels... |

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models are applied to the main French seaweed fleet to examine capacity output, capacity utilization, and scale inefficiency. Coastal seaweed vessels target only one output - kelp - with the same gear but with different input level combinations. The fishery is seasonal and subject mainly to input regulations, especially a one trip per day regulation implemented in 1987. The consequence was a decline in total observed output and a fall in capacity output and efficient output. Only the largest vessels and a few small vessels harvesting without this regulatory constraint operate at the optimal scale. The question of a change in regulation, especially a shift to an individual quota system, is raised. |

This 2002 report is the progress report of a study co-financed by the Brittany region and IFREMER within the framework of the XII State-Regional Planning Contract. It follows the 2001 report, which contains a comprehensive description of the Breton fleet in 2000, i.e., all occupations included, as well as its evolution since 1983. The work carried out in 2002 focused on mapping the fishing zones frequented by Brittany's ships as well as on analysing fishing strategies. |

If Sea Bass fish farming (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) is currently experiencing an increase in Southern Europe, it is vital, in order to better reflect raising structures, to control its wastes. In order to do so, quantifying this species' wastes is essential to be able to present simple excretion ratios, easily useable by the farmer. Those ratios have been based on nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon masses established on intensive farming and 4 batches belonging to his stock (averaging 24, 5 to 362, 5 g). Each batch was followed up during the course of 1 month and fish farming in its entirety for 2 months. Mass assessments for nitrogen and phosphorus were level ((intrants = extrants) but never precise, contrary to what can be found in bibliography. The main... |

This document presents a comparative assessment of four triannual analyses carried out between 1986 and 1995, on 1300 boats, on average, from the 35 ports of Southern Bay of Biscay fishing fleets (from Loire river to Spanish border). Fisheries statistics allow the identification of different fishing practices and fishing boats associated with them within the fleets. In order to allow comparison and analysis of the evolution that has taken place during the study period, the same variables (gear used, landed species) and multivariate analysis procedures have been used to produce groupings of vessels Over the period, an average of 11 components have been identified, grouped in two entities, mobile and fixed gears. If the discriminative characteristics (gears,... |
