This paper describes a new technique for inventory of permanent plots in tropical forests and presents the results of its application in a 1 ha permanent plot in a lowland dipterocarp forest at Kuala Belalong, Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei Darussalam. The technique is based on mapping of positions of tree individuals in three-dimensional space with a high accuracy. Measuring set consists of a distance measuring device (laser rangefinder) and a electronic compass supplying data to a field computer with specialized software (Field-Map®). This method is faster and more exact than methods based on Cartesian grids established in the field. As an example, inventories from 2000 and 2007 of the plot mentioned are compared concerning presence, taxonomical... |

This study aimed to compare three sampling methods: fixed area, Bitterlich, and Prodan, regarding accuracy and relative efficiency to estimate the variables: diameter at 1.30 m above soil level (DBH), number of trees, basal area, and volume. The limit of error established was 10% at probability level of 95%, using 30 plots for each method. Circumference at 1.30 m above soil level was measured, for conversion in DBH, with total time counted since the plots installation until the last tree measured. The most accurate sampling was the fixed area method, for estimation of DBH and number of trees per hectare, whereas the Bitterlich method was the most accurate for estimation of basal area and volume. Bitterlich method proved to be more efficient for estimation... |

The aim of this study was to quantify the stocks in volume, biomass and carbon in wood of a fragment of Caatinga dry forest, in Caicó Municipality, Rio Grande do Norte State, northeastern of Brazil. The inventory and sampling of biological material was carried out for biomass and carbon analysis. Wood density of eight species representing 91% of the importance value (VI) of the fragment was determined to convert timber volume into biomass. The percentage of carbon in these species was determined by wood elemental analysis. The carbon stock was calculated based on that carbon percentage multiplied by biomass of each tree. For those species that have not been examined (9% of VI) it was used average basic density () and carbon (), weighted by importance value... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare methods of obtaining the site index for eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) stands, as well as to evaluate their impact on the stability of this index in databases with and without outliers. Three methods were tested, using linear regression, quantile regression, and artificial neural network. Twenty-two permanent plots from a continuous forest inventory were used, measured in trees with ages from 23 to 83 months. The outliers were identified using a boxplot graphic. The artificial neural network showed better results than the linear and quantile regressions, both for dominant height and site index estimates. The stability obtained for the site index classification by the artificial neural network was also... |

This study aimed to map the stem biomass of an even-aged eucalyptus plantation in southeastern Brazil based on canopy height profile (CHPs) statistics using wall-to-wall discrete return airborne laser scanning (ALS), and compare the results with alternative maps generated by ordinary kriging interpolation from field-derived measurements. The assessment of stem biomass with ALS data was carried out using regression analysis methods. Initially, CHPs were determined to express the distribution of laser point heights in the ALS cloud for each sample plot. The probability density function (pdf) used was the Weibull distribution, with two parameters that in a secondary task, were used as explanatory variables to model stem biomass. ALS metrics such as height... |

Species distribution modeling has relevant implications for the studies of biodiversity, decision making about conservation and knowledge about ecological requirements of the species. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the use of forest inventories can improve the estimation of occurrence probability, identify the limits of the potential distribution and habitat preference of a group of timber tree species. The environmental predictor variables were: elevation, slope, aspect, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and height above the nearest drainage (HAND). To estimate the distribution of species we used the maximum entropy method (Maxent). In comparison with a random distribution, using topographic variables and vegetation index as... |

Abstract The majority of Atlantic Forest fragments in Southern Brazil are second-growth forests dominated by fast-growing species with considerable market-value timber. Nevertheless, volume prediction models are scarce, especially to estimate tree total volume (i.e., stem plus branches). This study approached the issue through the following aims: to fit and select stem and total volume models (generic and species-specific) using data from 288 harvested trees in a management operation, and to fit generic and species-specific bark factors. The power model embedding diameter at breast height (D) and tree stem or total height (H) presented the greatest prediction strength for both stem and total tree volume. Models including only D to predict total tree volume... |
