Soil drying rate and gas exchange of three Phaseolus vulgaris L. varieties Phyton
Aguirre-Medina,JF; Kohashi-Shibata,J; Cadena-Iñiguez,J; Avendaño-Arrazate,C.
Intermittent drought is the main limiting factor for bean production in Mexico. The root system of three bean varieties of different origin and tolerance to water stress was exposed to different drying soil rates. The synthetic varieties were: Pinto Villa (PV, water stress tolerant) and Bayo Madero (BM, water stress susceptible) both of mesoamerican origin and growth habit type III (climbing habit), and ICA Palmar (water stress tolerant) of Andean origin and growth habit type I (shrub). Treatments were three soil drying rates, which were achieved by stopping irrigation and either maintaining or removing the pot cover made with PVC tubes in a split root system. Gas exchange was studied during 32 h. Slow soil drying rate (with cover) generated a gradual...

Photosynthetic responses of tropical tree species from different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions Rev. Bras. Bot.
Ribeiro,Rafael V; Souza,Gustavo M; Oliveira,Ricardo F; Machado,Eduardo C.
This study evaluated the photosynthetic responses of seven tropical trees of different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions, taking into account changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Although early successional species have shown higher values of CO2 assimilation (A) and transpiration (E), there was not a defined pattern of the daily gas exchange responses to high irradiance (FSL) among evaluated species. Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze (late secondary) and Astronium graveolens Jacq. (early secondary) exhibited larger reductions in daily-integrated CO2 assimilation (DIA) when transferred from medium light (ML) to FSL. On the other hand, the pioneer species Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. had significant DIA increase when...

Physiological quality of sesame seeds produced from plants subjected to water stress Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Ronimeire Torres da; Oliveira,Alexandre Bosco de; Lopes,Maria de Fátima de Queiroz; Guimarães,Marcelo de Almeida; Dutra,Alek Sandro.
ABSTRACT Germination and seed vigor may be influenced by several factors, such as water stress during production, which affect crops differently according to the phenological stage of the plant. The aim of this study therefore was to evaluate the physiological quality of sesame seeds from plants subjected to water stress at different phenological stages. To this end, sesame plants were subjected to water stress at the following stages: I - germination to the start of vegetative growth (T1); II - vegetative growth to flowering (T2); III - flowering to pod formation (T3); IV - fruit maturation (T4); also for stress at all stages (T5) and full irrigation (T6). By weighing and daily irrigation of the containers, levels were kept at 50% of pot capacity (CV) for...

Silva,Cláudio Ricardo da; Folegatti,Marcos Vinícius; Silva,Tonny José Araújo da; Alves Júnior,José; Souza,Claudinei Fonseca; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos.
Irrigation scheduling based on soil moisture status is one of the most useful methods because of its practicality and low cost. The effects of available soil water depletion on evapotranspiration (ETc), transpiration (E), leaf water potential at predawn (psiP) and midday (psiM), stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation (A) in lime 'Tahiti' trees (Citrus latifolia) were evaluated to improve irrigation schedule and minimize water use without causing water stress. The trees were spaced 7 ´ 4 m and drip-irrigated by four drippers with the available soil water content (AWC) depleted by suspension of irrigation (40 days). Leaf water potential was measured on a pressure chamber (psiP and psiM) and leaf gas exchange...

Salt stress induced damages on the photosynthesis of physic nut young plants Scientia Agricola
Silva,Evandro Nascimento da; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Ferreira-Silva,Sérgio Luiz; Viégas,Ricardo Almeida; Silveira,Joaquim Albenisio Gomes.
Salinity is a major limiting factor to crop productivity in the world especially in semiarid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the photosynthetic resistance of Jatropha curcas (L.) young plants subjected to salt stress. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with treatments in a 2 x 3 factorial: two NaCl levels (0 and 100 mmol L-1) and three harvest times: 7 and 14 days of salt exposure and three days of recovery. Leaf Na+ and Cl-concentrations and the K+/Na+ ratios, after seven days of salt exposure, did not reach ionic toxic levels, suggesting that the NaCl-induced osmotic effects prevailed over the ionic ones. Under this condition, the salt stress caused reduction in leaf gas exchange parameters, such as CO2...
