'Suvetar' and 'Valotar' - new strawberry cultivars Organic Eprints
Hietaranta, Tarja; Parikka, Päivi.
The strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivars ‘Suvetar’ and ‘Valotar’ have been released from the breeding programme of MTT Agrifood Research Finland. Both new cultivars overwintered as well as the control cultivars ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ overwintered even better than ‘Polka’. ‘Suvetar’ was produced from the cross ‘Polka’ × ‘Emily’. It scored better than the control cultivars for sensory assessed skin resistance. Measured fruit firmness of ‘Suvetar’ was not significantly different from that of ‘Polka’, but was better than ‘Jonsok’. ‘Valotar’ originates from a cross between ‘Jewel’ and ‘Senga Sengana’. Its measured fruit firmness was better than that of ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Polka’. Considering sensory assessments, the good firmness seems to be largely...

Zwischen Kosmos und Erde. 2. Verlust an Nahrungsqualität durch Hybridsaatgut Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo.

European perspectives of organic plant breeding and seed production in a genomics era. Organic Eprints
Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Wilbois, K-P.; Østergård, H..
For further optimisation of organic agricultural systems, more focus is required on organically produced seeds and the development of better adapted varieties. Organic plant breeding and seed production need to comply with the concept of naturalness as applied in organic agriculture, which not only includes the nonchemical and agro-ecological approaches, but also the integrity of life approach. As organic environments are less controllable and are more variable, breeding should aim at improved yield stability and product quality by being adapted to organic soil fertility as well as sustainable weed, pest and disease management. Also the ability to produce economicacceptable seed yield avoiding seed-borne diseases should be included. On the short...

Root growth vigour is a better predictor than root hair traits of early nutrient uptake in spring wheat plants grown at low soil fertility Organic Eprints
Wang, Yaosheng; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Magid, Jakob.
Background and Aims A number of root and root hair traits have been proposed as important for acquisition of P. However, it remains unknown whether these traits are most important in determining macro- and micronutrient uptake at low soil fertility. This study investigated the variations in root and root hair traits among spring wheat genotypes and examined which root and root hair traits are most important for high uptake of macro- and micronutrients. Methods Six spring wheat genotypes were grown in a soil with low nutrient availability. The root and root hair traits as well as the content of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results A significant genetic variability in root and root hair traits was found. High root growth vigour and long and...

Samenfeste Sorten oder Hybriden - Anbauvergleich von Möhren unter den Verhältnissen des Ökologischen Landbaus Organic Eprints
Fleck, M.; Sikora, F.; Gränzdörffer, M.; Rohmund, C.; Fölsch, E.; von Fragstein, P.; Heß, J..
A field trial with carrots was carried out in 1998 at two sites in Hesse (North: loamy soil in Neu-Eichenberg; East: sandy soil in Queck) to compare 6 open pollinating and 6 F1 hybrids under an Organic Farming regime. Characteristics of cultivation, harvest, quality, and longevity were measured. Of the parameters of cultivation and harvest the hybrids showed a more intensive foliage growth, higher marketable yields (plus 29 and 25%), and more homogeneous taproots than the open pollinating cultivars. Picture forming methods clearly separated the samples into the two groups of breeding methods. The open pollinating cultivars were characterized by higher degrees of form intensity and ripeness and a stable vitality. The hybrids of the sandy site had a better...

Acknowledging the Role of Gender in Organic farming, Informal Seed Sector in particular and krisoks’ Perspectives Organic Eprints
Shahid, Shaila; Md. Hossain, Zakir.
Seed-the source of life. And woman holds the seed with the hope of new life. Instead of producing diverse seed from homestead agriculture, women are engaged traditionally to select seed, drying, preserving, protecting during storage, saving them from any economical crisis of the family. To ensure the seed quality and the perfect storage place & methods, women hold the vast knowledge. They decide the quantity and variety of seed to be saved and the method of preservation. Seed selection by women is a continuous activity. Working in the fields, they observe the plants and decide which seeds to select. They identify plants of good quality on the basis of size, grain formation and their resistance to pests and insects. Here a woman looks at the seed...

Genetische Variation in der Resistenzinduktion gegenüber Phytophthora infestans bei Tomaten Organic Eprints
Sharma, MSc Kalpana; Butz, Dipl. Ing. Andreas F.; Finckh, Prof. Maria R..
There are numerous instances in which induced plant resistance responses (IR) have been demonstrated. However, before IR can be made use of in practice it is important to understand as much as possible the ecology and genetics of the inducing agents and their interactions with plants and pathogens. Effects of host genetic background were tested with thirteen tomato varieties and two isolates of Phytophthora infestans. Isolate effects on inducibility were tested with six varieties and six pathogen isolates. Leaf disks of plants that had been treated with BABA (DL-3-aminobutyric acid) or water were inoculated seven days later with 20 µl sporangial solutions of 5*104 sporangia ml-1. All experiments were repeated three times with six replications each....

Evolutionary breeding of wheat for low input systems Organic Eprints
Wolfe, Prof Martin S.; Hinchsliffe, Miss Kay S.; Clarke, Dr Sarah M; Jones, Dr Hannah; Haigh, Miss Zoe; Snape, Prof John; Fish, Dr Leslie.
Genetically diverse Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) may be useful in environmentally variable low-input systems as an alternative to pure varieties. They are formed by assembling seed stocks with diverse evolutionary origins, recombining these stocks by hybridisation, bulking the F1 progeny, and subsequent natural selection of the progeny in suc-cessive natural cropping environments. CCPs derived from either 10 high yielding parents (YCCPs), 12 high quality parents (QCCPs), or all 22 parents (YQCCPs), were grown at four sites (2 organic, 2 conventional) in the UK. The YCCPs out yielded the QCCPs, which had higher protein concentrations and Hagberg falling numbers. Although the CCPs performed within the range of the parents, they often performed better...

Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in India Organic Eprints
Messmer, Monika; Roner, Tina; Finckh, Maria R.; Forster, Dionys; Rajeev, Verma; Rajeev, Baruah; Shreekant S, Patil.
Organic cotton production currently takes place in 22 countries resulting in 241’697 metric tons of fibre and 1.1% of the global cotton production (Truscott et al. 2010). Up to 80% of world’s organic cotton is produced in India. However, this market is threatened due to the displacement of traditional cotton species and cultivars by genetically modified (GM) hybrids selected for high input farming. Organic cotton farmers are facing increased difficulties in finding suitable cultivars in India (Nemes, 2010). Moreover, there is a big risk of physical and genetic contamination of organic cotton with GM cotton and the loss of locally adapted genetic resources. Therefore fast action is needed to re-establish a GM-free seed chain and breeding programs for...

BIO SUISSE Considers Hybrid Rye Ban Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine.
Hybrid varieties are increasingly and widely used in organic farming, although there has never been a conscious decision to do so. This is especially true for vegetables and maize. For bread cereals, especially rye, the decision can still be taken in Switzerland. Organic rye is grown on only 250 ha, about 20% of which are hybrid varieties. About 60% of the total organic demand is imported.

Diversity of mitochondrial large subunit rDNA haplotypes of Glomus intraradices in two agricultural field experiments and two semi-natural grasslands Organic Eprints
Börstler , Boris; Thiéry, Odile; Sýkorová, Zuzana; Berner, Alfred; Redecker, Dirk.
Glomus intraradices, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), is frequently found in a surprisingly wide range of ecosystems all over the world. It is used as model organism for AMF and its genome is being sequenced. Despite the ecological importance of AMF, little has been known about their population structure, because no adequate molecular markers have been available. In the present study we analyse for the first time the intraspecific genetic structure of an AMF directly from colonized roots in the field. A recently developed PCR-RFLP approach for the mitochondrial rRNA large subunit gene (mtLSU) of these obligate symbionts was used and complemented by sequencing and primers specific for a particularly frequent mtLSU haplotype. We analysed root samples...

Sortenprüfung Kernobst für den biologischen Anbau Organic Eprints
State of the Art: World-wide there is very little cultivar testing of pipfruit under the conditions of organic farming. No rare there appropriate breeding programs on-going. Thus, knowledge is very scare. Definition of the problem: Pipfruit as apple and pears are difficult to produce organically. A key disease is scab (Venturia sp.); but also susceptibility to leaf spot disease, monilia, sooty blotch disease, aphids, insects, biennial bearing, cracking etc. are major problems to overcome with organically approved methods and products. Additionally, also organic pipfruit have to achieve the high and significantly increased expectations in terms of outer and inner quality. Project aims: To find apple and pear cultivars suited for organic...

Anpassungsprozesse in der Frühentwicklung von Weizenpopulationen über 11 Generationen an das Anbausystem Organic Eprints
Finckh, Maria R.; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Weedon, Odette D.; Vijaya Bhaskar, A.V..

Evolutionary changes of weed competitive traits in winter wheat composite cross populations in organic and conventional farming systems. Organic Eprints
Bertholdsson, Nils-Ove; Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
Seedling root and shoot growth in hydroponics and allelopathic activity using a bioassay have been studied in very diverse populations of winter wheat grown under either organic or conventional conditions for a number of generations and subjected only to natural selection. The study was conducted on seeds from generation 6 (F6) and 11 (F11) from three composite cross populations (CCPs) produced by the Organic Research Centre in the UK. Since the F5 the populations were maintained under organic and conventional conditions in Germany. Two parallel populations were created from each CC, resulting in a total of six organic and six conventional CCPs. The sets of parallel populations showed similar evolutionary trends indicating that the observed changes are...
