Biogeography and comparative cytogenetics between two populations of Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) (Ostariophysi: Erythrinidae) from coastal basins in the State of Bahia, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Jacobina,Uedson Pereira; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Dergam,Jorge Abdala.
The species Hoplias malabaricus is a predator fish found in nearly all cis-Andean basins. From a cytogenetic point of view, this species comprises, at least, seven differentiated karyomorphs. Several localities have been formerly analyzed in Brazil, however, some regions, such as Bahia State, remain underrepresented. Recently, the Brazilian Environment Ministry classified both Itapicuru and Contas river basins (entirely located within Bahia territory) as priority conservation areas, whose biodiversity status lacks enough information. Therefore, the goal of the present work was to characterize, cytogenetically, populations of H. malabaricus from both basins, by using conventional staining, Ag-NOR and C-banding techniques. All specimens presented a diploid...

New species of titi monkey, genus Callicebus Thomas, 1903 (Primates, Pitheciidae), from Southern Amazonia, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Dalponte,Julio César; Silva,Felipe Ennes; Silva Júnior,José de Sousa e.
The genus Callicebus is one of the most diverse Neotropical primate groups, with 31 recognized species. However, large knowledge gaps still exist regarding the diversity of this genus. Such gaps are gradually being filled due to recent intensification of sampling efforts. Several geographic distributions have been better delimited, and six new species have been described in the last 15 years. The goal of the present study is to describe a new species of Callicebus belonging to the Callicebus moloch species group, recently discovered in an area previously considered to be part of the geographic distribution of C. cinerascens. Data collection was conducted through direct observations, specimen collection and interviews with local residents during four...

Gall-inducing insects of restinga areas (Atlantic Forest) in Brazil: economic importance Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Maia,Valéria Cid.
Abstract Many gall-inducing insects have been reported as pests in the Old World and North America, although few such examples are known from South America. A list of gall-inducing insects of potential economic importance, with a focus on those of restinga environments, was compiled using Maia (2013a) as starting point and updated with the database “Thompson ISI”, using ‘Insect (title) and gall (topic)’ as keywords. Botanical names were updated using the site “Flora do Brasil, 2020”, while potential economic significance of host plant species was acquired from Santos et al. (2009) and the site “Useful Tropical Plants”. Fifty-eight galling species were associated with 29 economically important plant species of 18 families in Brazilian restingas. The gallers...

Ceramium nitens (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta), an uncommon species from Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
FUJII,MUTUE TOYOTA; COCENTINO,ADILMA L.M.; PEREIRA,SONIA M. B..
Morphological studies on Ceramium nitens (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a completely corticated species, were carried out based on specimens rediscovered in Brazil fifty years after its first record. Its occurrence in Brazil was considered doubtful since it had been collected only once since 1945. Ceramium nitens can be recognized by having axial cells entirely covered by cortical cells, except for the cells near the apex, obscuring the nodal and internodal banding thalli, characteristic of most Ceramium species. In this paper the occurrence of Ceramium nitens in Brazil is confirmed and its vegetative and tetrasporangial structures are described in detail and their implications for the taxonomy of the genera Ceramium, Centroceras and Corallophila are discussed....

Vocal repertory of Scinax littoreus (Anura: Hylidae) with comments on the advertisement call of the Scinax perpusillus species group Rev. Bras. Zool.
Pontes,Rafael; Mattedi,Camila; Baêta,Délio.
The Scinax perpusillus species group consists of thirteen bromeligenous treefrogs, of which only six have had their acoustic parameters appropriately described. In this work, we present the vocal repertory of Scinax littoreus (Peixoto, 1988) based on recordings obtained from three different populations in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Based on our observations we suggest that the vocal repertory of S. littoreus is composed of two distinct types of calls. The call named type A, which corresponds to a long series of multipulsed notes, is likely to have a mating function. This type of call is similar to that reported for Scinax arduous Peixoto, 2002, Scinax peixotoi Brasileiro, Haddad, Sawaya & Martins, 2007, and Scinax perpusillus (Lutz...

New record of the rare Atlantic Forest rodent Phyllomys lundi (Mammalia: Rodentia) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Faria,Michel B.; Siqueira,Moisés L.G.; Bonvicino,Cibele R..
ABSTRACT The arboreal echimyid rodent of the genus Phyllomys Lund, 1839 is found in the eastern Brazilian Atlantic forest, from the state of Ceará to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, reaching the São Francisco and Paraná river basins in the west. There are 13 species in the genus. Phyllomys lundi Leite, 2003, which until now was known from only two localities, is one of the four endemic Atlantic Forest species of Phyllomys with very restricted distribution. We provide additional data on the morphology, distribution and phylogeography (based on cytochrome b sequences) of the rare P. lundi . Our new record broadens the northern limit of the distribution P. lundi by approximately 250 km with respect to previous records.

Geographic distribution and hosts of Zaprionus indianus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in North-Eastern Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Lavagnino,Nicolás J.; Carreira,Valeria P.; Mensch,Julián; Hasson,Esteban; Fanara,Juan J..
The first published record of the African drosophilid Zaprionus indianus Gupta 1970 in the Americas refers to individuals observed on fallen persimmon (Diospyros kaki Linnaei, «caqui») fruits in São Paulo city (Brazil) in March 1999. Since that date, this species colonized altered and natural environments across the continent. In the present work we report new records for Z. indianus in north eastern Argentina. Moreover, our results showed that this species represents a fairly high proportion among collected drosophilids in some sampling sites. Our survey also revealed that this invading species has the ability to breed and feed in a wide range of native and cultivated host-plants.

Taxonomy and cladistics of the group of genera related to Cyrtomon Schoenherr (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Naupactini) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Lanteri,Analía A.; Del Rio,M. Guadalupe.
In this contribution we update taxonomic and geographical information on five genera of weevils (Curculionidae: Entiminae: Naupactini) distributed in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. As a result of a cladistic analysis based on 48 morphological characters and 18 terminal species (two outgroups and 16 species of the ingroup) we recover a single most parsimonious tree with two main subgroups, one including Mendozella Hustache as a sister group of Cyrtomon Schoenherr, and the other including Lamprocyphopsis Lanteri, Priocyphopsis Lanteri and Priocyphus Hustache. In this tree Cyrtomon hirsutus (Hustache) is the sister species of Mendozella curvispinis (Hustache), consequently we establish the new combination Mendozella hirsuta (Hustache), and...

Isognomon bicolor (C.B. Adams) (Bivalvia, Isognomonidae): primeiro registro para o Brasil, redescrição da espécie e considerações sobre a ocorrência e distribuição de Isognomon na costa brasileira Zoologia
Domaneschi,Osmar; Martins,Claudio Mantovani.
The bivalve family Isognomonidae is represented in the Western Atlantic by the living genera Crenatula Lamarck, 1804 and Isognomon Solander, 1786. I. alatus (Gmelin, 1791) and I. radiatus (Anton, 1839) are the only Isognomonidae referred to the Brazilian malacofauna. The present work refers to the first record and geographic distribution of I. bicolor along the Brazilian littoral, and presents a re-description of the species based on shell characters, which include those of the prodissoconch. The occurrence of I. alatus and I. radiatus along the Brazilian littoral could not be confirmed, despite the intensive search for these Isognomonidae from Rio Grande do Norte through Rio Grande do Sul.

Range extension for Thomas' Mastiff bat Eumops maurus (Chiroptera: Molossidae) in northern, central and southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Sodré,Miriam M.; Rosa,Adriana R. da; Gregorin,Renato; Guimarães,Maricélio M..
Thomas' Mastiff bat, Eumops maurus (Thomas, 1901) is known from northern South America in Ecuador, Venezuela and Guiana and so it probably occurs in Brazil, yet it has not been reported. Here, we present the first record for E. maurus in Brazil. Captures were from the Brazilian states of Tocantins and Goiás (northern and midwestern Cerrado region of the country), and São Paulo (southeastern Brazil, Atlantic Forest). In the first two locations, all bats were roosting in palm leaves while in the later location, a single animal was found alive in a 15th-storey apartment in the city of São Paulo. This bat inhabits savannas with swamps dominated by the palm Mauritia flexuosa (buriti) and gallery forests. This record is the first of E. maurus in an urban area....
