A new method for estimating the leaf area index of cucumber and tomato plants Horticultura Brasileira
Blanco,Flávio Favaro; Folegatti,Marcos Vinícius.
Non-destructive methods of leaf area measurement are useful for small plant populations, such as experiments with potted plants, and allow the measurement of the same plant several times during the growing period. A methodology was developed to estimate the leaf area index (LAI) of cucumber and tomato plants through the evaluation of the leaf area distribution pattern (LADP) of the plants and the relative height of the leaves in the plants. Plant and leaf height, as well as the length and width of all leaves were measured and the area of some leaves was determined by a digital area meter. The obtained regression equations were used to estimate the leaf area for all relative heights along the plant. The LADP adjusted to a quadratic model for both crops and...

Acephate and methamidophos residues in greenhouse and in field grown tomatoes Horticultura Brasileira
Trevizan,Luiz Roberto P.; Baptista,Gilberto C. de; Papa,Geraldo.
Increasing horticultural production under protected cultivation requires more detailed studies about the occurence of pesticide residues, due to the special and peculiar environment under controlled conditions, in which some pests, that are of little concern in the field, become important. The insecticide acephate and its methamidophos metabolite residues were evaluated in greenhouse-grown tomatoes and compared to an open-field tomato crop. The treatments: (a) check; (b) one application of 75 g a.i. acephate.100 L-1 water; (c) one application of 150 g a.i.100 L-1 water; (d) four applications of 75 g a.i.100 L-1 water were evaluated. Fruit, leaf and soil samples were taken at (-1), zero, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 days after the last or only application. The...

EL PAPEL DEL ADMINISTRADOR DE AGRONEGOCIOS EN LA SEGURIDAD ALIMENTARIA AgEcon
Guerra E., Guillermo A.; Aguilar Valdes, Alfredo; Cabral Martell, Agustin; Alvarado Martinez, Luis Felipe; Alvarado Martinez, Tomas Everardo; Arras Vota, Ana Maria; Moreno Medina, Salomon.
For decades, food security has been a worldwide problem affecting the poorest in order to find a possible solution to this dilemma that not only continues, but constantly grows with the increase in population. Agriculture, as the main food supplier, has evolved and increased its productivity, and has expanded its agricultural frontiers, since previous decades, in its attempts to solve this problem. If predominant conventional agriculture (mainly dedicated to productivity) is complemented with substantial increase of transgenic, organic, agroecological, greenhouse and hydroponic crops, it will be more feasible to avoid the loss of forest, the damage and loss of soils and at the same time diminish food insecurity. Within this context, the agribusiness...

Tradable Carbon Permit Auctions: How and Why to Auction Not Grandfather AgEcon
Cramton, Peter; Kerr, Suzi.
An auction of carbon permits is the best way to achieve carbon caps set by international negotiation to limit global climate change. To minimize administrative costs, permits would be required at the level of oil refineries, natural gas pipe lines, liquid sellers, and coal processing plants. To maximize liquidity in secondary markets, permits would be fully tradable and bankable. The government would conduct quarterly auctions. A standard ascending-clock auction in which price is gradually raised until there is no excess demand would provide reliable price discovery. An auction is preferred to grandfathering (giving polluters permits in proportion to past pollution), because it allows reduced tax distortions, provides more flexibility in distribution of...

The challenges of finding efficient policy measures to reduce Australia’s agricultural Greenhouse gas emissions AgEcon
King, Helen.
A comprehensive emissions trading scheme (ETS) is Australia’s principal climate change policy instrument. There are undoubtedly benefits of full ETS coverage. However, if emissions that cannot be affordably, reasonably and accurately measured are included, these must be balanced against potential costs. This report explores why agriculture is different from other sectors. Agriculture’s diffuse and diverse emissions are inherently difficult to measure. They also fluctuate in response to environmental factors such as climate and biophysical characteristics. It is problematic to include the agriculture sector in the ETS, at reasonable cost and with incentives for behaviour change at the emission source. This is because of the climate and biophysical...

Vegetative growth and yield of strawberry under irrigation and soil mulches for different cultivation environments Scientia Agricola
Pires,Regina Célia de Matos; Folegatti,Marcos Vinícius; Passos,Francisco Antonio; Arruda,Flávio Bussmeyer; Sakai,Emílio.
The vegetative growth and yield of strawberry in relation to irrigation levels and soil mulches are still not well known, mainly for different environmental conditions. Two experiments were carried out in Atibaia, SP, Brazil, during 1995, one in a protected environment and the other in an open field, to evaluate the cultivar Campinas IAC-2712, under different irrigation levels and soil mulches (black and clear polyethylene). Three water potential levels in the soil were used in order to define irrigation time, corresponding to -0.010 (N1), -0.035 (N2), and -0.070 (N3) MPa, measured through tensiometers installed at the 10 cm depth. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was adopted, as randomized complete block, with 5 replicates. In the protected cultivation, the...
