The challenge of the reference and counter-reference system in the prenatal assistance to pregnant women with infectious diseases Anais da ABC (AABC)
Figueiredo,Elisabeth N.; Vianna,Lucila A. C.; Peixe,Marina B.; Ramos,Valdete M.; Succi,Regina C. M..
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of infectious diseases, such as syphilis, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and hepatitis B and C, in pregnant women who undertook their prenatal care in thirteen basic health units (BHU) in São Paulo city. The efficiency of the reference and counter-reference system in such prenatal infectious diseases was evaluated considering the medical recordings of the final result of the pregnancy and the vertical transmission rates of these diseases. It consists of an epidemiologic study whose observations were based on the notes of the prenatal medical and nurse records of pregnant women who had infectious diseases susceptible to vertical transmission and final infectious status registers of...

Determinants of HIV-1 mother-to-child transmission in Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Martínez,Ana M.B.; Hora,Vanusa P. da; Santos,Adriana L. dos; Mendoza-Sassi,Raul; Von Groll,Andréa; Soares,Esmeralda A.J.M.; D'Ávila,Nildo; Silveira,Jussara; Leal,Renata G.; Tanuri,Amilcar; Soares,Marcelo A..
Different human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtypes may have distinct biological, immunological and pathogenic properties. Efficiency of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) may be among those properties, but few and controversial results have been described so far. In this study, 102 children born from HIV-1-infected mothers between 1998 and 2004 in the city of Rio Grande, Brazil were analyzed for potential risk factors associated with MTCT. That geographic region is characterized by a high proportion of subtype C-infected subjects, and it allowed comparison between subtypes B and C and their influence on MTCT. The analysis also included clinical, obstetric and immunological parameters. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to evaluate...

Paraconsistents artificial neural networks applied to the study of mutational patterns of the F subtype of the viral strains of HIV-1 to antiretroviral therapy Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,PAULO C.C. DOS; LOPES,HELDER F.S.; ALCALDE,ROSANA; GONSALEZ,CLÁUDIO R.; ABE,JAIR M.; LOPEZ,LUIS F..
ABSTRACT The high variability of HIV-1 as well as the lack of efficient repair mechanisms during the stages of viral replication, contribute to the rapid emergence of HIV-1 strains resistant to antiretroviral drugs. The selective pressure exerted by the drug leads to fixation of mutations capable of imparting varying degrees of resistance. The presence of these mutations is one of the most important factors in the failure of therapeutic response to medications. Thus, it is of critical to understand the resistance patterns and mechanisms associated with them, allowing the choice of an appropriate therapeutic scheme, which considers the frequency, and other characteristics of mutations. Utilizing Paraconsistents Artificial Neural Networks, seated in...

Frequency of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies in patients infected by HIV-1 BABT
Leite,Elza Regina Manzolli; Lima,Oswaldo Luiz Luz; Leite,Fábio Renato Manzolli; Costa,Paulo Inácio da.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies in patients infected by HIV-1 and relate it with the different clinical courses of the disease. Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes from 145 individuals. HIV-1 infection was confirmed by ELISA test. The presence of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies and HLA allele's were determined. Clinical evolution was set as fast (<1 year between diagnostic and death), moderate (1-3 years) or slow (>3 years). Class I anti-HLA alloantibodies presence was lower in healthy individuals than in those infected by HIV-1 (4.2% against 32.4%). However, an equal distribution of these alloantibodies was found among the individuals infected, independent on the clinical evolution. Thus,...

Current treatment for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has improved survival and allowed infected patients to develop atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). Specific strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk in the infected population have not been developed. It is necessary to know the magnitude of cardiovascular risk in this population. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess cardiovascular risk using a well-known clinical score and to investigate coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS) in this population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Adults with HIV infection were studied. Demographic, clinical and anthropometric data, serum glucose and lipids were obtained. Cardiovascular risk was calculated through Framingham risk score...

Bezafibrate for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in HIV1-infected patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy BJID
Geraix,Juliana; Souza,Micheli Evangelista de; Delatim,Francieli Cristina; Pereira,Paulo Câmara Marques.
The use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV-infected patients has been associated with the development of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CD) including dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia being the most frequent metabolic disturbance in these patients. Fibrates are indicated when hypertriglyceridemia is accentuated and persists for over six months. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of bezafibrate for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in HIV-infected individuals on HAART. All patients received 400mg/day of bezafibrate and were evaluated three times: Mo (pre-treatment), M1 (one month after treatment), and M2 (six months after treatment). Fifteen adult individuals, eight males and seven females with...

Human immunodeficiency virus and the central nervous system BJID
Almeida,Sergio Monteiro de; Letendre,Scott; Ellis,Ron.
The pandemic of HIV/AIDS continues to grow daily. Incident cases among women, intravenous drug users and ethnic minorities comprise the fastest growing segment of the HIV-infected population, and the number of HIV-infected individuals over the age of 50 is growing rapidly. Today, the central nervous system and the immune system are seen as main targets of HIV infection. Significant progress in the knowledge and treatment of AIDS has been obtained in recent years. The neurological manifestations directly related to HIV are acute viral meningitis, chronic meningitis, HIV-associated dementia (HAD), vacuolar myelopathy, and involvement of the peripheral nervous system.

Parkinsonism in HIV infected patients during antiretroviral therapy – data from a Brazilian tertiary hospital BJID
Dehner,Luis Filipe; Spitz,Mariana; Pereira,João Santos.
Abstract Introduction Advances in the treatment of HIV infection in the last decades have increased life expectancy of these patients and raise the question of what kind of effect chronic infection and its treatment might exert on the behavior of age-related conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases. Patient data We performed a retrospective analysis of patients’ records to assess the frequency of the association between HIV infection and parkinsonian symptoms in our hospital population. Among 249 records we identified four individuals with reported parkinsonian symptoms initiated after HIV diagnosis. Three of them had no other identifiable cause of secondary parkinsonism. All had symptom onset before the age of 60. Based on this study sample one...

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and its association with sarcopenia BJID
Pinto Neto,Lauro Ferreira da Silva; Sales,Marina Cerqueira; Scaramussa,Eduarda Sobral; da Paz,Clara Junia Calazans; Morelato,Renato Lirio.
Abstract Presarcopenia and sarcopenia were evaluated in HIV-infected individuals and in healthy elderly controls according to the consensus definitions of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Bioelectrical impedance, a hydraulic hand dynamometer, and gait speed were used to evaluate muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, respectively. Adjusted and unadjusted binary logistic regression predicted the risk of sarcopenia. Predictor contribution was assessed by the Wald test. Significance was established at p ≤ 0.05. The HIV-infected group consisted of 33 patients on treatment (42.4% women; mean age 59 ± 7 years; mean BMI 25 ± 6 kg/m2; viral load undetectable in 30 cases). The HIV-uninfected group consisted of 60...

Lipodystrophic syndrome in children and adolescents infected with the human immunodeficiency virus BJID
Alves,Crésio; Oliveira,Ana Cláudia; Brites,Carlos.
The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has resulted in greater survival of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, the use of these drugs has been associated with lipodystrophic syndrome (LS), which is characterized by metabolic alterations (dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, and lactic acidosis) and abnormal corporal fat distribution. Clinically, LS may manifest as three different forms: lipohipertrophy (accumulation of fat in the central part of the body), lipoatrophy (loss of fat in the extremities, face and buttocks) and mixed (lipohipertrophy + lipoatrophy). Although its physiopathology has not been elucidated, some...
