Pinto,Roberto Magalhães; Gomes,Delir Corrêa; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C.; Noronha,Dely.
Worm burdens were evaluated and compared in two groups of the guinea pig, Cavia poreellus (Linnaeus, 1758): animals of the first group were conventionally maintained in an institutional animal house and those of the second group were openly kept in pet shops in Brazil. Animals from both sources were infected only with the nematode Paraspidodera uncinata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1914 (10% of prevalence in guinea pigs from lhe institutional facility and 40% in those animals from the pet shop). Other helminth samples recovered from Brazilian guinea pigs during 52 years and that are deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) were also analyzed. Paraspidodera uncinata and the cestode Monoecocestus parcitesticulatus...

The anthelmintic resistance in small ruminants is a common problem and concern worldwide. The aim of this study was to verify anthelmintic treatment efficacy in naturally infected sheep. This study was conducted on nine herds that used the same anthelmintic management for over a year. In each farm, the animals were divided into two groups: untreated control group (n = 5) and treated (n = 10) according to the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG). The treatment effect was checked based on EPG results and larval culture performed before treatment and 10 days after treatment. Significant differences were not observed (P> 0.05) on EPG results between untreated and treated groups. The coproculture showed that the animals were infected primarily byHaemonchus...

ABSTRACT The population of wild animals is regulated by many biotic and abiotic factors, and parasites are a biotic factor that affects the dynamic and density of host populations. From 2002 to 2014, 62 wild animals from the biomes Pantanal, Amazon, and "Cerrado" (or Savanna), which died in attendance in the veterinary hospital or have been road-killed, underwent necropsy for parasitological examination. Overall, 36 species of parasites were identified from 24 host species. Among the parasites, the most prevalent order was Oxyurida (29.1%), followed by Strongylida (20.9%), Spirurida (19.4%), Ascaridida (16.2%), Pentastomida (3.2%), Echinostomida (3.2%), Gygantorhynchia (3.2%), Rhabditida (1.6%), Plagiorchiida (1.6%), and Monilimorfida (1.6%), especially...

Melo,Osana Prado; Ramos,Renata Maria Arruda; Di Beneditto,Ana Paula Madeira.
The objectives of this work were to reporte the helminths of the marine tucuxi, Sotalia fluviatilis (Cetacea: Delphinidae) in northern Rio de Janeiro State; and to check if the infestation rate varied with the host characteristics (sex and maturity) and year seasons. From 1989 to 2002, 80 marine tucuxis that were by-caught in fisheries were examined and four parasites were recorded: Braunina cordiformis, Anisakis typica, Halocercus brasiliensis and Nasitrema sp. The parasitism in the marine tucuxi corroborated its feeding habits and there were no infestation rate differences between males and females, youngs and adults, as well as between year seasons. This work reports for the first time the occurrence of the genus Nasitrema in the marine tucuxi.
