| The potential of the fishery resources of Nigeria (marine, brackish and freshwater) is assessed by means of primary and secondary data. The status of fish culture and its rapid development possibilities are discussed. Catch disposal and wastage therefore are critically examined. The inshore artisanal fisheries which have access to 128,000-170,000 mt of demersal pelagic and shellfish resources annually appear to be almost fully exploited. There is hope however for increased capture gear efficiency. On the other hand, the demersal stocks of the inshore industrial fishery, with a potential of 20,000 m.t. are still under-utilised. | In the Dermersal Fishing period of the Cruise T94/11/05 D-O (15/11/94-23/11/94) an area of 12,520.9 km2 was covered, that is. The Ecuadorean Shelf between the 02°10'0”S - 80°0'0”W and 14 to 115 meters deep throughout th Ecuadorean Continental Shelf of the Guayaquil Gulf area. A total of 78 species was identified as follows: 74 of this 95%, two of crustaceans, one of molluscan and one of holothurid (Sea cucumber). The estimated total biomass of demersal fish was of 78, 384.9 t, from which the 52% was concentrated between the 02°48'9”S and 03°15'8”S. | En la III y IV Regiones las áreas de manejo y explotación de recursos bentónicos (AMERB) se han establecido como la principal herramienta de manejo del recurso loco (Concholepas concholepas). Sin embargo, su aplicabilidad para la administración y aporte en términos del desarrollo sustentable, aunque sugerentes, requieren de una evaluación objetiva, en cuanto al manejo de carácter discreto que se ha establecido para cada AMERB, desconociendo la eventual interacción espacial de las mismas. | Examination of published information on temperature, oxygen and other enviromental prefrences of tuna like fishes suggests that the Nigerian EEz should have commercial quantities of fishes. ICCAT historical catch and effort data analysed are confirmatory. given the prevailing low level of maintenance conciousness, initial investmnt and skills required, purse-seine may not be decidedly superior to pole ond line as capture technique. Prefered size of vessel type and gear specific scenarios are described. It appears that fuel costs can attract some of the multinational fleets to Nigeria and that transhipment facilities and a local canery are advantageous. |

| Nineteen lightday rectangular transects were made 16 in the area of the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador), and 3 in an oceanic area at the west of the Gulf of Guayaquil, this was the second part of research cruise, oriented to the evaluation of the small pelagic fish stocks, it was made between september 14th and 27th, 1995. The SIMRAD EK-500 acoustic system was used, installed on board of the National Research Institute (INP) R/V Tohallí. At the same time, people from the INP's Fisheries Observer Program were on four private enterprises vessels, while they were fishing in the same Gulf's area.
