The potential and strategies for optimum utilization of the fisheries resources of Nigeria OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O.; Talabi, S.O..
The potential of the fishery resources of Nigeria (marine, brackish and freshwater) is assessed by means of primary and secondary data. The status of fish culture and its rapid development possibilities are discussed. Catch disposal and wastage therefore are critically examined. The inshore artisanal fisheries which have access to 128,000-170,000 mt of demersal pelagic and shellfish resources annually appear to be almost fully exploited. There is hope however for increased capture gear efficiency. On the other hand, the demersal stocks of the inshore industrial fishery, with a potential of 20,000 m.t. are still under-utilised. If poaching is eliminated, 3,500-4,000 mt of shrimp P. notialis can be harvested along with 7,000 mt of good sized fish as by...

From Farming to Fishing: Marine Resource Conservation OceanDocs
Versleijen, Nicole; Hoorweg, Jan.
This paper examines the arrival of a new group of fishermen on the Kenyan coast and what this has meant for the state of fishery resources. It reviews four subject areas: access and the number of fishermen; the fishermen’s identity; the choice of fishing gear; and the fishing grounds selected. Data were collected from a small number of fishing households in the villages of Uyombo and Takaungu in Kilifi District, using mainly qualitative research methods. Local households on the Kenyan coast face increasing pressure on land as well as on marine resources. The declining economic situation and greater pressure on land have made people turn to fishing as an income-generating activity. This group of fishermen is referred to as the ‘new’ generation of fishermen...

Impact of drainage water inflow on the environmental conditions and fishery resources of lake borollus OceanDocs
Al Sayes, A.; Radwan, A.; Shakweer, L..
The brackish water lake Borollus occupies a central position at the north between the two branches of the Nile delta. This lake has a particular importance in the fish economy of Egypt. Therefore environmental and fisheries investigation was carried out at the lake during 2000–2002, where 15 stations covering the whole area of the lake were sampled. The present study points out that: 1. The water transparency of the lake is low where the average Secchi disc depth ranged between 21.14 cm and 43.89 cm. 2. The average water temperature attained its minimum in winter and ranged between 16.20 °C and 17.80 °C. The highest temperature was in summer where it ranged between 28.33 °C and 28.52 °C. 3. The recorded pH values indicate that the lake water was generally...

González, J.; Tapia, C.; Wilson, A.; Stotz, W.; Orensanz, J.M.; Parma, A.M.; Valero, J.; Catrilao, M.; Garrido, J..

OceanDocs
Bava, J..
The objective was to use the synoptic capability of NOAA-AVHRR images, and the physical variables inferred from them, in order to achieve spatial and temporal analysis that may allow correlating the satellite variables with oceanographic processes and biological or fishing data. Methodologies of image processing were developed to make possible the use of AVHRR information for the standardized and reliable generation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images (using bands 3 to 5 in the thermal infrared), and water reflectance images (using optic bands 1 and 2) as an index of surface turbidity in coastal zones. A methodology was also generated in order to obtain gradients images derived from SST images, which allows the identification of oceanographic fronts....

A review of 1973 - 1982 Tuna fishing activities within Nigeria's Eez and the options for Nigeria. OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O..
Examination of published information on temperature, oxygen and other enviromental prefrences of tuna like fishes suggests that the Nigerian EEz should have commercial quantities of fishes. ICCAT historical catch and effort data analysed are confirmatory. given the prevailing low level of maintenance conciousness, initial investmnt and skills required, purse-seine may not be decidedly superior to pole ond line as capture technique. Prefered size of vessel type and gear specific scenarios are described. It appears that fuel costs can attract some of the multinational fleets to Nigeria and that transhipment facilities and a local canery are advantageous.

Introducción al análisis Bayesiano OceanDocs
Hernandez, D.R..
An introduction to the Bayesian Analysis is presented and conceptual aspects highlighted. Initially, the probability concept is analyzed from its objective perspective such as frequency, and from its subjective perspective such as degree of belief. It is discussed how, within the context of Bayesian statistics, probability as degree of belief allows to give sense to the probability of a hypothesis and, therefore, enables to resolve problems of scientific interest that could not be otherwise addressed. The likelihood concept is discussed and the Bayes formula, which integrates a priori information and knowledge with information provided by current data demonstrated. Basic concepts of the Decision Theory within the Bayesian perspective are introduced. The...
