Résultats de la mise en oeuvre des réseaux REPHY et SRN – Zones côtières de la Manche orientale et de la baie sud de la Mer du Nord – Bilan de l’année 2016. ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Ambiaud, Antonin.
The coastal zone of the Nord – Pas de Calais / Picardie showed dysfonctioning patterns of the ecosystem considered to be link to human activities along shores. These results in regular massive development of species, such as the phytoplanktonic seaweed, Phaeocystis sp. which life cycle was partly linked to nutrients availability and consequently to anthropogenic inputs. As part of the evaluation of the influence of continental inputs on the marine environment (nitrates, phosphates,…) and on potential eutrophication processes, of the estimation of the efficiency of the sewage treatments plants in the possible elimination of dumpings and in order to establish a long-term survey to follow up the change in coastal waters quality, the regional nutrients...

Antarctic bottom water flow through the Vema fracture zone ArchiMer
Vangriesheim, Annick.
During the October-November 1977 R/V "Jean Charcot" cruise, bathymetric and hydrological surveys of the Eastern Vema Fracture Zone were carried out in order to moor current meters on the silliocated in the area, with the aim of evaluating the bottom water flow through this passage in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The sill zone in fact comprises a succession of three secondary sills situated between 40052'W and 41°02'W at about 10048'N, at depths ranging from 4600 to 4700 m. Westward of the sills, there is a thick (750-950 m) bottom water layer of Antarctic origin. The potential temperature found at the bottom is 1. 30°C. In the sill zone, the homogeneous layer is thinner and has a potential temperature of 1.40°C. Eastward of the sills, the homogeneous layer is...

Etude preliminaire du zooplancton du Detroit de Davis. Relations trophiques entre zooplancton et poissons ArchiMer
Beaudouin, Jacqueline.
Sampling was carried out during 1970 at 22 stations from 72 degree -62 degree N; the sampling period varied from 21 minutes - 42minutes. 12 species of zooplankton were recovered consisting of specimens of copepods, euphausiids, chaetognathes, medusae, amphipods, pteropods and decapods. They were most abundant in the central zone, especially in 2 areas of maximum concentration (where the catch exceeded 100 cm super(3)) located 72 degree N and 67 degree N. Fish captured included young cod, rockfish and halibut; they were found mostly around these areas of maximum zooplankton concentrations. Only immature fish were recovered in this region; the adults had deserted these waters due to unusual and permanent low temperature water in the superficial layers.

Modélisation stochastique des variations à court terme du niveau d'eau dans l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent, Canada ArchiMer
Hilmi, K; Chanut, Jp; Elsabh, M.
Hourly sea level records taken at Quebec-Lauzon in the St. Lawrence estuary, Canada, are analysed both in frequency domain from 1970 to 1979 and time domain during 1973. Periodic variations, identified by spectral analysis and adjusted by harmonic regression, explain 90 to 95% of the total sea level variability. The residual (non tidal) variations of sea level, stochastic in nature, are responsible of great amplitudes of seiches and storm surges. Such series, representing less than 10%, is tested for its stationnarity and randomness and fitted by AutoRegressive-MovingAverage (ARMA) model. The long-period variations (2 to 28 days) correspond to atmospheric pressure and winds. The short-period variations (2 hours to 1 day) call be attributed to seich-like...

Hydroclimatic relationships with planktonic time series from 1975 to 1992 in the North Sea off Gravelines, France ArchiMer
Le Fevre-lehoerff, Geneviève; Ibanez, Frédéric; Poniz, Paola; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Planktonic time series collected since 1975 off Gravelines, France, were analysed in the context of climatic changes. Principal component analysis and the cumulative sums method wereapplied to 30 data sets which included meteorological and hydrological parameters and planktonic descriptors. Eight groups of biological descriptors were linked to external parameters. The study of winds highlighted the importance of cyclonic and anticyclonic influences. Seven year cycles appeared clearly in air temperature and in species abundance with different trophic levels for species such as Ternora longicornis, Oikopleura dioica and Sagitta setosa, whereas an 11 yr cycle appeared for Pseudocalanus minutus. A 3 to 4 yr cycle was detected for atmospheric pressure,...

Summer mortality of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in relation to environmental rearing conditions ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Lambert, Christian; Costil, Katherine.
The purpose of this study is to investigate summer mortality of the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in relation to culture practices in the traditional oyster production region of Marennes-Oleron (France). Four oyster rearing conditions, varying culture location ("on-" or "off-bottom"), and site depth (65% to 80% daily immersion termed "deep" or 45% to 65%, termed "shallow") were studied to compare biologic performance and maturation status of oysters, in relation to sediment and water column parameters. The most severe mortality occurred in June to July in "on-bottom" reared oysters (25%), as compared with 10% mortality in "off-bottom" cultured oysters. Oysters (shell and meat) grew significantly better when reared "off-bottom" than "on-bottom."...

A model of the general circulation in the Persian Gulf and in the Strait of Hormuz: Intraseasonal to interannual variability ArchiMer
Pous, Stephane; Lazure, Pascal; Carton, Xavier.
Previous studies modeling the circulation and thermohaline structure in the Persian Gulf have suggested that interannual variability and vertical mixing processes could explain the model biases when compared to the few observations available. Here, a realistic, interannual, high-resolution model of the Persian Gulf is presented, validated against observations and then used to describe the intraseasonal to interannual variability in the circulation, water mass formation and exchange through the Strait of Hormuz. Sensitivity experiments to model settings, in particular vertical mixing parameterizations, have been performed in order to have the best comparison with all available observations. Main circulation and water mass characteristics correspond well to...

Le Fevre-lehoerff, Geneviève; Delesmont, Régis; Dewarumez, Jean-marie; Hitier, Benoist; Woehrling, Daniel.
This report is the 18 th on annual surveillance of the nuclear plant site of Gravelines. In 1996, mean power output was 4160 MW with a cooling flow rate of 213 m3 / sec leading to an outfull vT of 9°26. The major impact of chloration is due to bromoform (18.3 ug / 1) in outflow. The amplitude of the vibrio annual cycle is stable when compared to previous years but diversity increases. In 1996, earlyness in species reproduction was noticeable. Chlorophyll biomass reached 45 mg / m3 and noctiluca cycle was quite unusual. Impact is estimated aroud 20 - 40 % in phytoplankton biomass and 30 - 100 % in zooplankton, depending on the species. Subtidal abra alba populations have been studied. For intertidal populations disappearance of spio martinensis is to be...

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

A monthly time-series of the seasonal evolution of the North Mediterranean Current (NMC) and of nitrogen flux across a transect (5 degrees 12'5 E between 43 degrees 10'N and 42 degrees 50'N) at the entrance of the Gulf of Lions was carried out over two years. The NMC exhibited two distinct structures: a winter structure (from November to May) characterised by strong mesoscale and interannual variations in which the current was 20 to 30 km width, about 400 m depth and velocity scaled between 5 and more than 40 cm s(-1); and a summer structure (from May to November) which was less sensitive to mesoscale variations but showing large interannual variability. The current was located more offshore, was wider and shallower than the one in winter and velocity...
