Effects of natural aging and gender on pro-inflammatory markers BJMBR
Milan-Mattos,J.C.; Anibal,F.F.; Perseguini,N.M.; Minatel,V.; Rehder-Santos,P.; Castro,C.A.; Vasilceac,F.A.; Mattiello,S.M.; Faccioli,L.H.; Catai,A.M..
The term inflammaging is now widely used to designate the inflammatory process of natural aging. During this process, cytokine balance is altered, presumably due to the loss of homeostasis, thus contributing to a greater predisposition to disease and exacerbation of chronic diseases. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between pro-inflammatory markers and age in the natural aging process of healthy individuals. One hundred and ten subjects were divided into 5 groups according to age (22 subjects/group). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were quantified using the ELISA method. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was analyzed by turbidimetry according to laboratory procedures. The main findings of this study...

Gap junctions in the cardiovascular and immune systems BJMBR
Rozental,R.; Campos-de-Carvalho,A.C.; Spray,D.C..
Gap junctions are clusters of intercellular channels directly connecting the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. These channels are formed by proteins named connexins and are present in all metazoan organisms where they serve diverse functions ranging from control of cell growth and differentiation to electric conduction in excitable tissues. In this overview we describe the presence of connexins in the cardiovascular and lympho-hematopoietic systems giving the reader a summary of the topics to be covered throughout this edition and a historical perspective of the discovery of gap junctions in the immune system.

Evolution and conservation of immunological activity BJMBR
Vaz,N.M..
Paraphrasing what Gregory Bateson says on evolution, we might say that: "Immunology has long been badly taught. In particular, students - and even professional immunologists - acquire theories of immunological activity without any deep understanding of what problems these theories attempt to solve."

Glycoconjugates and polysaccharides of fungal cell wall and activation of immune system BJM
Pinto,M.R.; Barreto-Bergter,E.; Taborda,C.P..
The fate of organochlorine 14C-dicofol in activated sludge process was investigated. Results showed that the major part of radioactivity remained adsorbed on biological sludge. Consequently, its final disposal deserves special attention. The small amounts of dicofol, biotransformed or not, which remained in the treated effluent could contaminate receiving bodies.

Regulation of T lymphocyte subpopulations in specific pathogen-free chickens following experimental fowl adenovirus-Ⅷinfection BJM
Wang,Chun-jie; Yu,Siriguleng; Ao-ri-ge-le,; Jia,De-gang; Yao,Hong-qiang; Zhao,Huai-ping; Lillehoj,H.S.; Si-mu-ji-de,; Postnikoff,Andrew CL; Xu,Si-ri-gu-leng.
Two-day-old specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens were divided into two groups. Group I was inoculated orally with fowl adenovirus VIII (FAV-VIII). Group II served as a negative control. Chickens were investigated at various days post-inoculation (dpi) by flow cytometric analysis for changes in T lymphocyte subpopulations in immune system and blood. In the thymus, CD3+ T lymphocytes were increased at 25 dpi, with significant increases in the FAV infected noted at 1, 12, 20dpi (p<0.05). This was accompanied by a corresponding increase of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes. In the spleen, CD3+ and CD4+ T lymphocytes were increased significantly at 30 dpi (p<0.01) whereas CD8+ and TCR γ δ+ T lymphocytes were decreased at 1 (p<0.05), 30 dpi (p<0.01). An...

Up-regulation of human immune system function by Donkey’s Milk BJPS
Taghiloo,Saeid; Allahmoradi,Esmaeil; Sadeghian-Kiadehi,Seyedeh Forough; Omrani-Nava,Versa; Nazar,Eisa; Ebrahimzadeh,Mohammad Ali.
Donkey’s milk represents a good alternative to human milk because of its chemical characteristics similar to those of human’s. In present study, the pro- and anti-inflammatory effects of donkey’s milk were evaluated on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PBMCs were isolated from 12 young and 12 aged normal subjects. PBMCs were cultured with or without the optimal and non-cytotoxic dose of pasteurized donkey’s milk, and polymyxin B was used to inhibit the possible endotoxin contamination. Following 18 hours incubation, culture supernatants were harvested to measure the secreted Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10) by ELISA. Donkey’s milk significantly increased TNF-α (p= 0.01), IL-8...

Hematology and serum biochemistry of broilers at the initial and growth stages submitted to different levels of digestible sulfur amino acids Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Genilson Bezerra de; Martins,Poliana Carneiro; Rezende,Pedro Moraes; Santos,Januária Silva; Oliveira,Evelyn de; Trentin,Thays de Campos; Martins,Danieli Brolo; Stringhini,José Henrique; Café,Marcos Barcellos.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of digestible methionine and cystine (Met + Cys) levels on the hematological and serum biochemical parameters of broiler chickens during the initial and growth stages. For this, 1,800 male chicks of the Coob 500 strain were used, with 900 chicks in the initial phase (1 to 21 days old) and 900 chicks in the growth phase (22 to 42 days old), distributed in a completely randomized design of five treatments with six replicates of 30 birds. The treatments consisted of 0.545, 0.616, 0.711, 0.782, and 0.853%; and 0.514, 0.571, 0.647, 0.704, and 0.761% digestible Met + Cys for “1 to 21” and “22 to 42” days of breeding, respectively. Results showed that digestible Met + Cys levels in broiler feed...

Broiler adaptation to post-hatching period Ciência Rural
Maiorka,Alex; Dahlke,Fabiano; Morgulis,Maria Silvia Furquim de Azevedo.
In the latest years more attention has been given to mechanisms for bird adaptation at post-hatching period by management of environmental conditions and formulations of diets offered during this period when digestive, immune, and thermo-regulating systems suffer slight changes. In post-hatching period, digestive system is anatomically complete, but its functionality is still immature in relation to adult birds. The chick immunity depends on maternal antibodies transferred to egg just before laying. In addition, variations within thermal comfort zone might affect initial development of chick. For example, high temperatures may induce hyperthermia with dehydration, while low temperatures may lead to hypothermia responsible by pulmonary hypertension...
