Inmunohistochemical Evaluation of Estrogen Receptors Alpha and Beta in Normal Inferior Turbinate Mucosa International Journal of Morphology
Millas,Ieda; Liquidato,Bianca Maria; Dolci,José Eduardo Lutaif; Macéa,José Rafael; Fregnani,José Humberto Tavares Guerreiro; Meceles,Lenira Rocha.
It has been postulated that the nasal mucosa, like other human tissues, is affected by a complex interactive network of neuropeptides, cytokines, allergic and inflammatory mediators and hormones such as estrogen, in which associations between symptoms (e.g. nasal stuffiness and coryza) and hormonal variations deriving from pregnancy, use of hormonal contraceptives and menstrual cycle phases are observed. The objective is evaluating the presence of specific estrogen receptors (types alpha and beta) in inferior turbinate mucosa in healthy subjects without nasal symptoms. Samples of nasal inferior turbinate were removed from patients undergoing aesthetic nasal surgery, and analyzed using hematoxylin-eosin staining, followed by immunohistochemical preparations...

ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT DURING EARLY POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENT DECREASES PARVALBUMIN EXPRESSION IN THE RAT SOMATOSENSORY CORTEX International Journal of Morphology
Inzunza,Oscar; Bravo,Hermes; Fernández,Víctor.
In the rat brain, parvalbumin (PV) expression starts on postnatal day 8 and comprises a heterogeneous population of nonpyramidal GABAergic neurons. In the present work, an immunohistochemical study was done on control and experimental rats submitted to enriched environmental conditions between postnatal days 3 to 18 or 3 to 24. Counts of PV+ neurons were made in the dorsomedial and in the ventrolateral regions of the somatosensory cortex. In control animals, PV+ neurons reached a peak on day 24 declining towards day 120. In these rats a peculiar distribution pattern was detected in which immunoreactive neurons are more numerous in the dorsomedial than ventrolateral regions as well in infragranular than supragranular layers and in posterior regions than...

Localization of Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) in Submandibular and Sublingual Salivary Glands of Mice throughout Postnatal Development International Journal of Morphology
Hipkaeo,Wiphawi; Watanabe,Masahiko; Kondo,Hisatake.
In view of the fact that human marijuana users often show dry mouth symptom, the present study was attempted to examine the localization of CB1, which was originally identified in brain, in the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands of postnatal developing male mice by immunohistochemistry. In submandibular gland, CB1-immunoreactivity was positive in a majority of acinar cells in forms of granular appearance in their apical cytoplasm, while it was negative in the ducts at newborn stage. The immunoreactivity decreased in the acinar cells at P1W and no immunoreactivity was detected in the acinar cells at P3W and thereafter. The immunoreactivity was positive in ductal cells at P3W and it remained positive thereafter until P8W stage. The immunoreaction...

Commentary: Is the Evidence for Localization of Nephrin on the Slit Diaphragm Rigid? International Journal of Morphology
Hipkaeo,Wiphawi; Suzuki,Ryoji; Abe,Hiroshi; Chaisiwamongkol,Kowit; Kondo,Hisatake.
After careful observation of immuno-electron microscopic findings of the renal glomerular podocyte slit so far published by various authors, it should be noted that no convincing evidence is present for localization of nephrin-immunoreactivity in the slit itself, but that nephrin-immunoreactivity is dominantly localized along the membranes of podocyte pedicles from their tip over a substantial extension. In addition, the notion that the slit diaphragm is composed of strands is compatible with the widely distributed view that the slit strands represent rod-shaped nephrin molecules. However, 3-D findings that the diaphragm is composed of not only strands but also membranous elements have recently demonstrated separately by embedment-free section electron...

Androgen Receptor Distribution, PAS and Alcyan Blue Reaction in the Vomeronasal Organ and the Nasal Septum Mucosa of the Developing Male Rat International Journal of Morphology
Núñez Chichet,M E; Genovese,P; Bielli,A.
The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a tubular chemoreceptory organ which detects environmental pheromones and is essential for mammalian normal reproductive activity. A sensitive chemoreceptory neuroepithelium lines the concave VNO wall and the opposite, convex wall is lined by a seudostratified, receptor-free epithelium. The secretion of the Jacobson glands (JG) -tubuloacinary glands lying in the lamina propia of the VNO - is essential for pheromones contacting vomeronasal organ chemoreceptors. Tubuloacinary glands lying in the connective tissue of the nasal septum mucosa (Bowman glands), can be classified as ventral and dorsal, according to their location. Positivity to PAS and Alcyan blue reactions and androgen receptor immunolocalization was evaluated with...

TNF-α and IL-6 immunohistochemistry in rat renal tissue experimentaly infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Marinho,M; Monteiro,CMR; Peiró,JR; Machado,GF; Oliveira-Júnior,IS.
Leptospirosis is a public health problem worldwide and its etiology remains unclear. Its pathogenesis involves a complex interaction between host and infecting microorganism. The inflammatory reaction that controls the infection process also underscores many pathophysiological events occurring in leptospirosis. We investigated the presence of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in renal tissues by immunohistochemical and histopathological examination in animals experimentally inoculated with Leptospira serovar Canicola. All the tests were carried out 2, 7, 14, 21 or 28 days after inoculation. Although TNF-α and IL-6 had been detected in tissues throughout the observation period, these cytokines appeared more intensely during the...

For immunohistochemistry of the prion diseases, several pretreatment methods to enhance the immunoreactivity of human and animal abnormal proteinase-resistant prion protein (PrPSc) on the tissue sections have been employed. The method of 121 degrees C hydrated autoclaving pretreatment or the combination method of 121 degrees C hydrated autoclaving with a certain chemical reagent ( formic acid or proteinase K, etc) are now widely used. We found that an improved hydrated autoclaving method at 135 degrees C, more effectively enhanced PrPSc immunoreactivity for the antibodies recognizing the linear epitope. In addition, this method was more effective for the long-term fixation samples as compared with other previous methods. However, this modified method could...

Choline acetyltransferase detection in normal and denervated electrocyte from Electrophorus electricus (L.) using a Confocal Scanning Optical Microscopy Analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
NUNES-TAVARES,NILSON; CUNHA-E-SILVA,NARCISA LEAL; HASSÓN-VOLOCH,AÍDA.
Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter responsible for the transmission of impulses from cholinergic neurons to cells of innervated tissues. Its biosynthesis is catalyzed by the enzyme Choline acetyltransferase that is considered to be a phenotypically specific marker for cholinergic system. It is well known that the regulation of Choline acetyltransferase activity under physiological and pathological conditions is important for development and neuronal activities of cholinergic functions. We observed the distribution of Choline acetyltransferase in sections from the normal and denervated main electric organ sections of Electrophorus electricus (L.) by immunofluorescence using a anti-Choline acetyltransferase antibody. The animals were submitted to a...
