The genotype of the genus Teleopsis Rondani, T. sykesii (Westwood) from India is redescribed: Teleopsis onopyxus Séguy is now considered a junior synonym of T. sykesii. T. onopyxus was described from Madagascar, but this type locality must be due to mislabelling. T. sykesii occurs in India and perhaps in Myanmar. Lectotypes are designated for T. sykesii and T. onopyxus. From Sarawak and Sabah, Teleopsis pallifacies spec. nov. is described. Among its type series of more than 200 specimens, single flies occurred with labels from Australia and Irian Jaya. These are also considered to be mislabelled. Teleopsis now becomes a purely Oriental genus with no representatives in the Australasian or Malagasy regions. For T. sykesii and T. pallifacies spec. nov., data... |

In natural history collections throughout Europe, there are many old lion specimens of unknown origin. If these specimens can be shown to have originated from now-extinct populations their value would significantly increase, as would the value of the collections. Recently, a 200-year old mounted skeleton in the Zoological Museum Amsterdam has been identified as the extinct Cape lion Panthera leo melanochaita (Smith, 1842), based primarily on morphological information inferred from a painting of this specimen while it was still alive. To test this hypothesis, we used ancient DNA (aDNA) techniques to extract and sequence mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from this specimen, and compared the genetic results with previously published lion mtDNA sequences. Our results... |

A new species, Rubus ramachandrae, from Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, India is described and illustrated. It is closely similar to R. stipulosus and R. fuscifolius but differs by densely bristly or hirsute branches; narrowly ovate or oblong-lanceolate leaves with caudate-acuminate apex and adaxially hirsutulous vesture; abaxially grey tomentose intermixed with hirsutulous hairs; larger size of stipules and bracts with distinct margin and vesture; smaller size of floral structure. The distinct foliar as well as floral morphology of R. ramachandrae differs from all previously described species of Rubus. Differences in key morphological characters of R. ramachandrae, R. stipulosus and R. fuscifolius are also tabulated. In addition, pollen... |

A grapevine leafminer found recently in table grape orchards and vineyards in the Paarl region (Western Cape, South Africa) is described as Holocacista capensis sp. n. It has also been found on native Rhoicissus digitata and bred on that species in the laboratory. It is closely related to Holocacista salutans (Meyrick, 1921), comb. n. (from Antispila), described from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, but widespread in southern Africa and a native leafminer of various Vitaceae: Rhoicissus tomentosa, R. digitata, R. tridentata and Cissus cornifolia. Holocacista capensis has been found on Vitis vinifera both in Gauteng and Western Cape, the earliest record being from 1950 in Pretoria. The initial host shift from native Vitaceae to Vitis must have occurred much... |

Information on the Cosmopterigidae of Afghanistan and Jammu & Kashmir, India is presented. Two species: Labdia caroli spec. nov. and Vulcaniella kabulensis spec. nov. are described, and Eteobalea sumptuosella (Lederer, 1855), Hodgesiella quagella (Christoph, 1887) and a Vulcaniella species are described or mentioned. Diagnoses, descriptions, watercolours of the adults, line drawings of male and female genitalia, and type information are provided for each new species and also for the male of Hodgesiella quagella and the female of the Vulcaniella species. |

We investigated intraspecific variation of the Snowtrout, Schizothorax richardsonii on the basis of morphometric characters. Altogether, 217 specimens were collected from four rivers in the Western and Central Indian Himalaya. A truss network was constructed by interconnecting 14 landmarks to yield 31 distance variables that were extracted from digital images of specimens using tpsDig2 and PAST software. Transformed truss measurements were subjected to univariate analysis of variance, factor analysis and discriminant analysis. All variables exhibited significant differences between the populations. Altogether 86.6% of the specimens were classified into their original populations (82.9 % under a ‘leave-one-out’ procedure). With factor analysis measurements... |

A new species of Amomum from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is illustrated and described. The plant shows similarity with A. hypoleucum of South India and Sri Lanka in vegetative habit. The species can be distinguished by the presence of silvery silky abaxial side of lamina with appressed pubescence, creeping slender rhizomes, many flowered spike with short peduncle produced directly from base of the aerial stem, green to orange coloured persistent bracts arranged in two rows, glabrous anther and many fruits produced with prominent irregularly lobed ridges. A comparison with other Amomum species of the Andaman Islands is also provided. |

A divided infraorbital foramen is an important morphological feature in lion taxonomy and has previously been considered to occur only in the Asian lion, Panthera leo persica. Based on an examination of 498 lion skulls from museum collections in Europe and southern Africa, we report for the first time on the prevalence of the divided infraorbital foramen in African lions, as well as its occurrence in the tiger, P. tigris and the extinct Pleistocene European cave lion, P. leo spelaea. The higher frequency of this characteristic in Asian lions may have occurred after the lion colonised Asia, and can be considered an important morphological feature characterising this population. It is not clear whether recent anthropogenic population bottlenecks have... |

Karnataka state is a state of India with diverse agro-climatic zones. In 2001 it had a population of 53 million and 66% of population habitants living in villages. Agriculture is still major occupation in the rural areas of Karnataka and more than 90% of rural people are dependent on agriculture and agro-industries. However irregular rainfall patterns, pest attacks and poor nutrient management are resulting more frequently in crop failures. This has resulted in agrarian distress as with crop failures, farmers are unable to repay the loans. The government of Karnataka introduced Karnataka state policy of organic farming to decrease agrarian distress. In order to asses the impacts of this policy on agriculture, economic and ecological... |
