Tarer, V.; Marques, A.; Raymond, J. Ch..

As a contribution to understanding the potential impact of macroalgae on coral communities, this work evaluated the presence and dynamics of algae-coral interactions in two bays of the Santa Marta region. Two stations were sampled in Chengue Bay, located within the Tayrona Natural Park, and two other in the Santa Marta Bay which is adjacent to the city of Santa Marta. Three permanent 10 m belt transects were settled at each station, at which a total of 270 coral colonies were monitored monthly. Algae - coral interactions were recorded from each colony based on five categories defined by the distance between the coral tissue and the algal mat. A total of 1956 interactions were recorded, 67% of which corresponded to direct contacts, 22% to indirect contacts,...

Visualizing main effects and interactions for binary logit models AgEcon
Mitchell, Michael N.; Chen, Xiao.
This paper considers the role of covariates when using predicted probabilities to interpret main effects and interactions in logit models. While predicted probabilities are very intuitive for interpreting main effects and interactions, the pattern of results depends on the contribution of covariates. We introduce a concept called the covariate contribution, which reflects the aggregate contribution of all of the remaining predictors (covariates) in the model and a family of tools to help visualize the relationship between predictors and the predicted probabilities across a variety of covariate contributions. We believe this strategy and the accompanying tools can help researchers who wish to use predicted probabilities as an interpretive framework for...

IDENTIFYING CONSUMER VALUATION PATTERNS OF ALTERNATIVE NUTRITION AND HEALTH LABELS COMBINATIONS: EVIDENCE FROM SPAIN AgEcon
Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús; Gracia, Azucena; de Magistris, Tiziana.
The provision of nutrition and health information on food labels is increasing as an industry and regulation answer to the growing consumer concern with diet-health relationships. Prior research has shown that the presence of this information on food labels is valued by consumers; however there is still no clear pattern on which labelling options are more valued and how different consumers value the different options. This paper analyses the results of a choice experiment conducted to identify the effect of multiple health and nutrition information sources on consumer food choice, taking into account preference heterogeneity using a latent class approach. Results show that different consumer groups can be identified with clearly distinguishable valuation...

Does disturbance determines the prevalence of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium, Santalales: Viscaceae) in Central Mexico? RChHN
QUEIJEIRO-BOLAÑOS,MÓNICA E; CANO-SANTANA,ZENÓN; CASTELLANOS-VARGAS,IVÁN.
Large vegetation disturbance rates have been reported in the "Zoquiapan y Anexas" Protected Natural Area in Central Mexico. Arceuthobium globosum and A. vaginatum coexist within this area and have a deleterious impact on Pinus hartwegii. This study seeks to understand the relationship between this disturbance and the two dwarf mistletoe species prevalent in this zone. Twenty-four plots measuring 60 x55 m containing P. hartwegii trees were selected. Within these plots, the physical features of the land, the density of host and non-host trees, the prevalence of each mistletoe species, and six disturbance indicators were recorded. We found that A. vaginatum infests up to 47 % of P hartwegii trees and that its prevalence is affected positively by the slope,...

Arthropods obtained from the Amazonian tree species "Cupiuba" (Goupia glabra) by repeated canopy fogging with natural Pyrethrum Acta Amazonica
ADIS,Joachim; HARADA,Ana Yoshi; FONSECA,Claudio Ruy V. da; PAARMANN,Wilfried; RAFAEL,José Albertino.
Two canopies of a widely distributed Amazonian tree species, Goupia glabra Aubl. (Celastraceae, height 38 and 45m) were fogged several times with 1% natural pyrethrum during the rainy and dry seasons (1991-1994) in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil. Between 50 and 158 ind./m2 of arthropods were obtained per tree and fogging event. Hymenoptera, mostly Formicidae, and Diptcra dominated. A total of 95 ant species occurred on a single tree. Most ants were permanently foraging in the canopy and their recolonization after fogging seems to follow stochastic pathways. Data indicated an interaction between - 1) predating Formicidae and gall building Cecidomyiidae and - 2) Cecidomyiidae and the parasitic Hymenoptera.

Interactions between cationic liposomes and drugs or biomolecules Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARMONA-RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA.
Multiple uses for synthetic cationic liposomes composed of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) bilayer vesicles are presented. Drugs or biomolecules can be solubilized or incorporated in the cationic bilayers. The cationic liposomes themselves can act as antimicrobial agents causing death of bacteria and fungi at concentrations that barely affect mammalian cells in culture. Silica particles or polystyrene microspheres can be functionalized by coverage with DODAB bilayers or phospholipid monolayers. Negatively charged antigenic proteins can be carried by the cationic liposomes which generate a remarkable immunoadjuvant action. Nucleotides or DNA can be physically adsorbed to the cationic liposomes to be transferred to mammalian cells for gene...

Community structure of turf algae in interactions with massive corals in Tayrona National Natural Park, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez-Cubillos,Catalina; Gavio,Brigitte; Zea,Sven.
ABSTRACT Algal turfs are currently the most abundant benthic component on most coral reefs. Their wide distribution, functional role and positive response to factors that stress corals confirm their importance in the functioning of reef ecosystem. It has been shown that species composition, structural development and sediment retention influence their capacity to kill and displace adjacent live coral tissue. In this study in two reefs of the Tayrona National Natural Park (Colombian Caribbean), the variation in structure of turfs growing on and in direct interaction with massive live corals was determined, and its structural complexity was related with its sediment retention capacity. For that, the taxonomical composition was determined, and canopy height,...
