Pore network of an Inceptisol under different uses and relativized S-index as an indicator of soil physical quality PAB
Assis Júnior,Raimundo Nonato de; Mota,Jaedson Cláudio Anunciato; Freire,Alcione Guimarães; Alencar,Thiago Leite de.
Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate soil porous media quality under different uses, as well as to propose a new index to monitor changes in its structure due to management: the Srelative index. An Inceptisol under irrigated banana cultivation and secondary forest, in the Brazilian Apodi Plateau, was evaluated at three soil layers (0.0-0.1, 0.1-0.2, and 0.2-0.3 m) as to: particle size, particle and bulk density, organic matter content, intrinsic permeability to air, and water retention curve. Total porosity, index for pore continuity (defined by the ratio between soil intrinsic permeability to air and aeration porosity), volume of blocked pores, and the S and Srelative indices were determined. The Srelative index was calculated as the ratio...

Agro-industry production of sugarcane grown using subsurface drip fertigation with nitrogen and potassium PAB
Nascimento,Fábio Nunes do; Andrade Júnior,Aderson Soares de; Bastos,Edson Alves; Ribeiro,Valdenir Queiroz; Lopes,Alzeneide da Silva.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the stalk yield, technological quality parameters, and sugar and alcohol productions in the first sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) crop cycle, according to the response to N and K2O applications by subsurface drip fertigation. The experiment was carried out in a dystrophic Ultisol, in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The treatments consisted of a 2X + 2X + 1 incomplete factorial arrangement with the application of 60, 80, 120, 160, and 180 kg ha-1 N and 60, 80, 120, 160, and 180 kg ha-1 K2O. The maximum estimated yield (217.5 Mg ha-1) was obtained with the application of 180 kg ha-1 N and 60 kg ha-1 K2O. Sugar and alcohol productions increased with N application above 120 kg...

Alternative reference evapotranspiration methods for the main climate types of the state of Paraná, Brazil PAB
Gurski,Bruno César; Jerszurki,Daniela; Souza,Jorge Luiz Moretti de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to define the best alternative methods for estimating the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in the main climatic types (Cfa and Cfb) of the state of Paraná, Brazil. The methods tested were Budyko, Camargo, Hargreaves-Samani, Linacre, and Thornthwaite, which were compared to the ETo calculated with the Penman-Monteith ASCE (EToPM) method, between 1986 and 2015, in eight meteorological stations. The performance of the alternative methods was obtained from the coefficient of determination (R2), index “d” of agreement, index “c” of performance, and root mean square error (RMSE). The Hargreaves-Samani method has a better performance in estimating the ETo for the main climatic types in the state of Paraná. The Camargo...

Weed Management in Direct Seeded Rice Grown under Varying Tillage Systems and Alternate Water Regimes Planta Daninha
RIAZ,A.; KHALIQ,A.; FIAZ,S.; NOOR,M.A.; NAWAZ,M.M.; MAHBOOB,W.; ULLAH,S..
ABSTRACT: In direct seeded rice (DSR), flushes of weeds are encountered, and mostly subsequent herbicides need to apply to control weeds that appear later. A farmer friendly approach was hypothesized in present study to integrate the management strategies for water, soil and cost effective weed free rice production. Efficacy of various herbicides in weed control to improve the performance of aerobic rice grown under varying tillage and alternate water regimes was evaluated. Five weed management techniques (weedy check, weed-free, pendimethalin followed by manual weeding, pendimethalin + bispyribac sodium (BS) + bensulfuron (B) and pendimethalin + MCPA) were carried out within the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) regimes (15 and 20 cm depth) under two...

Management of private tubewells in a conjunctive use environment: a case study in the Mananwala Distributary Command Area, Punjab, Pakistan AgEcon
Malik, Saleem M.; Strosser, Pierre.
This paper analyzes the tubewell data collected by IIMI-Pakistan over a period of 4 years. While the main emphasis remains on the operation of private tubewells, public tubewells and canal water supplies are included in the analyses to give a more comprehensive picture of the conjunctive use environment, a characteristic of most of the irrigated areas of the Punjab, Pakistan.

World water demand and supply, 1990 to 2025: scenarios and issues AgEcon
Seckler, David; Amarasinghe, Upali A.; Molden, David J.; de Silva, Radhika; Barker, Randolph.
Presents two alternative scenarios of water demand and supply for 118 countries over the 1990 to 2025 period and develops indicators of water scarcity for each country and for the world as a whole. This study is the first step in IWMI's long-term research goal: to determine the extent and depth of water scarcity, its consequences for individual countries and what can be done about it.

Institutional factors affecting irrigation performance in Pakistan: research and policy priorities AgEcon
Bandaragoda, Don Jayatissa; Firdousi, G.R..
The strong irrigation tradition has sustained the broad based community interest in irrigation. The result is a very complex institutional milieu in which a set of formally established irrigation rules and organizations exists side by side with an intricate set of social institutions. The two sets act like a dual system often in conflict with each other. The authors, while analyzing the present institutional barriers, have highlighted the importance of irrigation rules and procedures in the institutional framework.

"Institutional adaptation" for integrated water resources management: An effective strategy for managing Asian river basins AgEcon
Bandaragoda, Don Jayatissa.
In many developing countries, their governments dominate the field of water resources management. Even in “participatory irrigation management” efforts, the governments play a dominant role. As these efforts are rarely based on any internally generated demand from the water users, they usually fail to create viable organizations at the local level. A similar setback can be seen in the more recent institutional reforms in Asia’s water sector, which are promoted by the donor agencies and, national and international development professionals. A survey of experiences in Asian countries shows that no country has successfully completed establishing new water sector policies and laws and river basin organizations, as prescribed. The need to improve current...

Improving agricultural productivity for poverty alleviation through integrated service provision with public-private sector partnerships: examples and issues. AgEcon
Hussain, Intizar; Perera, L.R..
Enduring low agricultural productivity is one of the major causes of rural poverty in South Asia. Based on a review of recent empirical studies, this paper focuses on three key questions: (1) why is agricultural productivity low in the region?; (2) what are the key constraints and opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity; and (3) what are the effective mechanisms to improve access to key productivity enhancing technologies, factors and services. Two major points raised in the paper are: (a) improved management of land and water is important for increasing productivity, but equally important is farmers' access to non land and water-related inputs and services, which through their complementary relationships with water, increase the productivity...

Assessing the outcomes of IWMI’s research and interventions on irrigation management transfer AgEcon
Giordano, Meredith A.; Samad, Madar; Namara, Regassa E..
The purpose of this paper is to summarize IIMI/IWMI's past research and interventions related to irrigation management transfer and to document, to the extent possible, the academic, policy, and technical outcomes of these efforts. The application of a range of direct and indirect measurement techniques suggests an overall positive contribution from IWMI to IMT theory and application.

Documents a "best practice" - a successful gender-balanced irrigation intervention in which women were given control over an irrigation technology. The study evaluates the approach taken by the implementing NGO, the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, in terms of its replicability in other areas where women share in farm activities and decision making.
