Glycyrrhizin attenuates endotoxin- induced acute liver injury after partial hepatectomy in rats BJMBR
Tang,B.; Qiao,H.; Meng,F.; Sun,X..
Massive hepatectomy associated with infection induces liver dysfunction, or even multiple organ failure and death. Glycyrrhizin has been shown to exhibit anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether glycyrrhizin could attenuate endotoxin-induced acute liver injury after partial hepatectomy. Male Wistar rats (6 to 8 weeks old, weighing 200-250 g) were randomly assigned to three groups of 24 rats each: sham, saline and glycyrrhizin. Rats were injected intravenously with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 24 h after 70% hepatectomy. Glycyrrhizin, pre-administered three times with 24 h intervals 48 h before hepatectomy, prolonged the survival of rats submitted to partial hepatectomy and LPS injection, compared...

Lipopolysaccharide-induced dental pulp cell apoptosis and the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in vitro BJMBR
Yang,H.; Zhu,Y.T.; Cheng,R.; Shao,M.Y.; Fu,Z.S.; Cheng,L.; Wang,F.M.; Hu,T..
Lipopolysaccharide exerts many effects on many cell lines, including cytokine secretion, and cell apoptosis and necrosis. We investigated the in vitro effects of lipopolysaccharide on apoptosis of cultured human dental pulp cells and the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax. Dental pulp cells showed morphologies typical of apoptosis after exposure to lipopolysaccharide. Flow cytometry showed that the rate of apoptosis of human dental pulp cells increased with increasing lipopolysaccharide concentration. Compared with controls, lipopolysaccharide promoted pulp cell apoptosis (P < 0.05) from 0.1 to 100 μg/mL but not at 0.01 μg/mL. Cell apoptosis was statistically higher after exposure to lipopolysaccharide for 3 days compared with 1 day, but no difference was...

Effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide on gastric emptying of liquids in rats BJMBR
The objectives of the present investigation were 1) to study the effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on rat gastric emptying (GE) and 2) to investigate a possible involvement of the vagus nerve in the gastric action of LPS. Endotoxin from E. coli (strain 055:B5) was administered sc, ip or iv to male Wistar rats (220-280 g body weight) at a maximum dose of 50 µg/kg animal weight. Control animals received an equivalent volume of sterile saline solution. At a given time period after LPS administration, GE was evaluated by measuring gastric retention 10 min after the orogastric infusion of a test meal (2 ml/100 g animal weight), which consisted of 0.9% NaCl plus the marker phenol red (6 mg/dl). One group of animals was subjected to bilateral...

Propofol exerts anti-inflammatory effects in rats with lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury by inhibition of CD14 and TLR4 expression BJMBR
Ma,Ling; Wu,Xiu-Ying; Zhang,Li-Hong; Chen,Wei-Min; Uchiyama,Akinori; Mashimo,Takashi; Fujino,Yuji.
We investigated the effect of propofol (Prop) administration (10 mg kg-1 h-1, intravenously) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury and its effect on cluster of differentiation (CD) 14 and Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 expression in lung tissue of anesthetized, ventilated rats. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 8 rats each: control, LPS, and LPS+Prop. Lung injury was assayed via blood gas analysis and lung histology, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid using ELISA. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect CD14 and TLR4 mRNA levels, and CD14 and TLR4 protein expression was determined by Western blot. The...

The reaction of dental pulp to Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide and Enterococcus faecalis lipoteichoic acid BJM
Oliveira,Laudimar Alves de; Barbosa,Sérgio Valmor.
This research evaluates the effects of the lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Escherichia coli and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) from Enterococcus faecalis on dental pulp. These molecules are components of the Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria cell wall, respectively. Ten dogs were used in the experiment. Inoculation in surgically opened pulp and coronal restoration with glass ionomer was the method chosen. The evaluation times were 1, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days. The results showed that the LPS and LTA, at 150 µg/ml, produced a negative interference in the pulp leading to destruction. LTA caused less damage than LPS.
