The wreckage of the tanker "AMOCO CADIZ" on the reefs of PORTSALL was the fourth oil spill in ten years on the coast of Brittany : it also is the largest known oil spill in the world. The patches at sea were driven eastward by westerly winds from March 17 to March 23. 140 Km of coast line was polluted. The oil spreaded more slowly towards the north west, south and north west where it spoiled some 375 Km of touristic sea coast and important fishing grounds. The coastline is six kilometers wide ; it includes islands and large reefs. The local tidal currents are very strong and reach more than three knots, during spring tides which may rise up to nine meters in a rough sea conditions. The turbulence of the water soon dispersed the slicks and mixed the oil... |

Many studies in coastal areas have shown the existence of thin chemical and biological layers. Their thickness and vertical extension are mainly controlled by hydrological and physical forcing. An accurate description of the phytoplankton communities growing within these layers is difficult to obtain without a well-adapted sampling system. A new Fine Scale Sampler (FSS) has been designed in Ifremer in order to study phytoplankton distribution and associated dissolved properties in high stratified water column. This FSS consists in a vertical array of 15 sampling bottles, horizontally laid with 20 cm intervals. Data acquired from a CTD and Fluorescence probe provide a precise FSS positioning at the depth of highest density gradient or at chlorophyll a... |

This paper documents the species of Pectinoidea Rafinesque, 1815 collected in Vanuatu during the SANTO 2006 expedition. A total of 49 species (13 Propeamussiidae Abbott, 1954, 4 Cyclochlamydidae n. fam., 1 Entoliidae Teppner, 1922, and 31 Pectinidae Rafinesque, 1815) are represented, of which 70% are new records for Vanuatu. A new family, Cyclochlamydidae n. fam., is established for the genera Cyclochlamys Finlay, 1926, Chlamydella Iredale, 1929 and Micropecten n. gen., formerly placed in Propeamussiidae, but differing by their sculptured prodissoconch (smooth in Propeamussiidae), an occasionally antimarginally sculptured right valve (smooth or weak commarginally sculptured in Propeamussiidae), a (common) simple outer prismatic layer of longitudinally... |

Eighteen species of Pectinoidea (six Propeamussiidae Abbott, 1954, one Entoliidae Teppner, 1922, eleven Pectinidae Rafinesque, 1815) are listed from the Tarava Seamounts, Society Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia. Four Propeamussiidae species (Parvamussium lamellatum n. sp., Parvamussium scutulatum n. sp., Parvamussium vesiculosum n. sp., Cyclopecten comptulus n. sp.) are new to science. |

Twenty-nine species of Pectinoidea (12 Propeamussiidae, 1 Entoliidae, 16 Pectinidae) are recorded from the Austral Islands, the southernmost archipelago of French Polynesia. One genus (Pectinidae: Lamellipecten n. gen.) and five species (Propeamussiidae: Parvamussium australanum n. sp., Cyclochlamys australensis n. sp., Cyclopecten ambiguus n. sp.; Pectinidae: Lamellipecten aduncus n. gen., n. sp., Mimachlamys erycina n. sp.) are new to science, and most others are new records for the archipelago. The near-shore fauna of Rapa has 12 species of Pectinidae, and half of these have narrow-range distributions. Such a remarkably high level of marine endemism is shared by other mollusc taxa on Rapa. |

Sixteen species of Pycnogonida are recorded from littoral or very shallow waters (0-3 m) of the coast of Oman. Four species are new to science: A. lagenaria, Ammothella omanensis, Achelia boschi, and Pycnogonum moolenbeeki. Since up to now no littoral Pycnogonida have been recorded from the Arabian peninsula, all other species are new to this region, with the exception of one which was recorded from deeper waters off Oman before. For some of them the range is considerably extended. |

The objectives of this work were to evaluate the richness and diversity of the Poduromorpha fauna in two biotopes in Restinga de Maricá, RJ, Brazil, to identify the characteristic species of each biotope and to determine the relationships between the community structure and the abiotic environmental parameters. Representatives of the Poduromorpha (Collembola) order were studied under an ecological viewpoint in halophyte-psammophyte vegetation and foredune zone in preserved areas of Restinga de Maricá, a sand dune environment in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The foredune zone showed the highest diversity, richness and equitability of springtail species. Differences in the fundamental, accessory and accidental species in each environment were... |

This paper examines existing measures taken to protect the coastal zones of the Mediterranean Sea and assesses their success. A summary of the main pressures facing these zones is given, followed by an analysis of the legislation covering coastal zone development in ten countries: Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. We find that not all of these states have legislation specifically covering coastal zones, but there is concern in all areas that the legislation is not working, We also look at the costs and benefits of controlling coastal development. Firstly, a literature review of valuation studies identifies a range of values placed on developed and undeveloped coastline for both users and local property... |
