CONTRACTING OVER COMMON PROPERTY: COST-SHARE CONTRACTS FOR PREDATOR CONTROL AgEcon
Yoder, Jonathan K..
Predator control cost-share contracts among livestock producers in North America date back to 1630. A model is developed which provides refutable implications for the structure and distribution of these contracts over time and space. Historical and contemporary state and county level data on sheep producer coyote control generally support the model.

Spatial Dynamics of the Livestock Sector in the United States: Do Environmental Regulations Matter? AgEcon
Herath, Deepananda P.B.; Weersink, Alfons; Carpentier, Chantal Line.
This study examines the factors affecting state annual share of national inventory for each of the hog, dairy, and fed-cattle sectors using data from the 48 contiguous states for 1976 to 2000. The paper develops a state specific, time-series environmental stringency measure and introduces instrumental variables to control for the possible endogeneity bias between livestock production decisions and regulatory stringency. The results indicate that differences in the severity of environmental regulations facing livestock producers have had a significant influence on production decisions in the dairy, and particularly the hog sector.

Livestock Production and Feed Use by Rural Households in China: A Survey Report AgEcon
Fuller, Frank H.; Hu, Dinghuan; Huang, Jikun; Hayes, Dermot J..
This report documents data and other information gathered from a survey of rural households in China. The survey was conducted as part of a research project aimed at assessing the potential for meat and feed grain exports to China. Responses to the survey questions provide information about grain and livestock production practices, costs of production, animal inventories, and feeding practices. The report describes the survey and collection process, summarizes selected data from the survey, and provides anecdotal information about livestock production and marketing in Chongqing, Sichuan, Shandong, and Jilin provinces.
Tipo: Working or Discussion Paper Palavras-chave: China; Cost of production; Feed use; Livestock marketing; Livestock production; Surveys; Livestock Production/Industries.

Organizing Meatpacking Cooperatives: Recent Producer Attempts AgEcon
Hogeland, Julie A..
Montana Livestock Cooperative and the Utah-based Intermountain Livestock Packing Association are meatpacking cooperatives established through equity and livestock commitments by producers. Their goals are to obtain sufficient capital to construct and operate a slaughter/processing plant. Member involvement requires a comprehensive feasibility study to show need for the plant and an understanding of cooperative organization.

Modeling Censored Data Using Mixture Regression Models with an Application to Cattle Production Yields AgEcon
Belasco, Eric J.; Ghosh, Sujit K..
This research develops a mixture regression model that is shown to have advantages over the classical Tobit model in model fit and predictive tests when data are generated from a two step process. Additionally, the model is shown to allow for flexibility in distributional assumptions while nesting the classic Tobit model. A simulated data set is utilized to assess the potential loss in efficiency from model misspecification, assuming the Tobit and a zero-inflated log-normal distribution, which is derived from the generalized mixture model. Results from simulations key on the finding that the proposed zero-inflated log-normal model clearly outperforms the Tobit model when data are generated from a two step process. When data are generated from a Tobit...

Pricing Fed Cattle on a Grid: An Analysis of the Incentive Mechanism over Time AgEcon
Fausti, Scott W.; Wang, Gerald; Diersen, Matthew A.; Qasmi, Bashir A..
Empirical results suggest that the grid premium and discount structure is slowly adjusting carcass quality incentive/disincentive market signals to encourage marketing on a grid and discourage marketing by the pen. If this trend continues, grid market share of steer and heifer slaughter volume should increase in the future.

Inventory of Ammonia Emissions from Livestock Production in Los Lagos and Los Ríos Regions, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Martínez-Lagos,Josué; Salazar,Francisco; Alfaro,Marta; Misselbrook,Tom  H.
This paper presents the first inventory of ammonia emissions from livestock production in Los Lagos and Los Ríos Regions of Chile. The inventory was focused in this area because is where cattle production is concentrated. This study aimed to quantify the amount of N losses due to ammonia volatilization from livestock production in these regions of the country, and to provide its spatial representation identifying their main sources. Calculations have been carried out for 1997 and 2007, and also projections to 2017 and 2027 were obtained. Calculated emissions were 6097 and 6206 t NH3-N for 1997 and 2007, respectively. Major sources of NH3-N emissions were cattle accounting for more than 85%, followed by horses and pigs. Farm management practices as grazing,...
