The influence of behavioral enrichment on dry food consumption by the black tufted-ear marmoset, Callithrix penicillata (Mammalia: Callithricidae): a pilot study Rev. Bras. Zool.
Vilela,Janice de M. V.; Miranda-Vilela,Ana L.; Stasieniuk,Erika Von Z.; Alves,Gabriela M.; Machado,Felipe N.; Ferreira,Walter M.; Saad,Flávia M. de O. B.; Machado,Paulo A. R.; Coelho,Camila C. G. M.; Silva,Natascha A. M. da.
Stereotyped behaviors in captive primates are often caused by unsuitable conditions. Environmental enrichment has been used to reduce these behaviors, and also to increase the frequency of behaviors appropriate to the species. In this pilot study we evaluated whether behavioral enrichment influences food intake by the black tufted-ear marmoset, Callithrix penicillata (É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812), by calculating energy maintenance requirements. We evaluated 16 individually housed, healthy adult black tufted-ear marmosets, randomly divided into two treatment groups, one with behavioral enrichment and one without. The enrichment techniques included structural aspects, such as placing fixed and mobile objects in the cage and supplying dry foods in an...

Protein requirements for growth in male and female Saanen goats R. Bras. Zootec.
Almeida,Amélia Katiane de; Resende,Kléber Tomás de; Silva,Simone Pedro da; Soares,Diogo da Costa; Fernandes,Márcia Helena Machado da Rocha; Teixeira,Izabelle Auxiliadora Molina de Almeida.
The objective of this study was to determine the protein requirements for the growth of intact male, female, and castrated male Saanen goats weighing 30 to 45 kg of body weight (BW) and to compare estimates of the protein requirements for maintenance (NPm) by the comparative slaughter and nitrogen balance techniques. To determine the maintenance requirements, 55 goats were assigned in a split-plot design using a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement (three sexes and three dry matter intake (DMI) levels). A linear regression of retained N (as measured by the slaughter technique and estimated from the nitrogen balance) on N intake on a daily basis was used to calculate the net protein for maintenance. The net protein requirement for weight gain (NPg) was obtained...

The objective of this study was to determine the nutritional requirements of energy and protein and estimate the efficiencies of metabolizable energy utilization for fat and protein deposition, as well as for maintenance (k m) and growth (k g). An experiment of comparative slaughter was carried out with thirty-seven 14-month-old (±1 month) Nellore bulls with 259±24.9 kg. Animals were divided as follows: five to reference, four to maintenance level and twenty-eight bulls feeding ad libitum. Bulls were also grouped in 4 different feedlot periods (42, 84, 126 and 168 days) for slaughter. The diet was composed of corn silage and concentrate, at a 55:45 ratio. After the slaughter, the left half carcasses were totally dissected for determination of body...

Reevaluation of the digestible lysine requirement for broilers based on genetic potential Scientia Agricola
Dorigam,Juliano Cesar De Paula; Sakomura,Nilva Kazue; Hauschild,Luciano; Silva,Edney Pereira da; Bendezu,Hilda Cristina Palma; Fernandes,João Batista Kochenborger.
Broiler strains available in the poultry industry present different requirements for dietary lysine due to their different growth potentials as a result of their genetic makeup. This study aimed to determine the model parameters for maximum nitrogen retention (NRmaxT), the nitrogen maintenance requirement (NMR) and the efficiency of lysine utilization (bc-1) to reevaluate the lysine (Lys) requirements of male and female broilers. Nitrogen balance trials were performed during three periods (I: 6-21 days, II: 22-37 days, and III: 38-53 days). Seven treatments were used for males and females; the treatments consisted of seven diets with protein levels ranging from 61 to 364 g kg-1 dry matter, with Lys being limiting in the dietary nitrogen (4.91 g of Lys in...

Recommendations for hygiene of masks and circuits in mechanically home ventilated patients BJID
Toussaint,Michel; Reychler,Gregory.
Home mechanical ventilation requires equipment, consisting of a generator of pressure, a tubing and an interface to deliver air to the patient. Instructions for equipment maintenance are generally not based on scientific evidence. Studies however have reported that tubing and masks used at home are the most commonly found as very dirty and contaminated. Dirtiness and contamination of equipment potentially expose patients to a higher risk of airway colonization, which, in turn, should cause respiratory infections. For this reason, published hygiene instructions include the use of disinfectant solution. Nevertheless, they generally fail to explain how basic maintenance may be achieved by simple cleaning with soap and water. The instructions for post-cleaning...
