Electricité de France (EDF) has asked Institut Français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (IFREMER) to monitor the coastal marine environment and its living resources around nuclear power plants along the French coast. Started in 1974, these investigations were undertaken in the areas of Gravelines, Le Blayais, Paluel, Flamanville, and Penly; the objective is to detect any impact of the open-circuit water cooling system, as well as any differences in the marine environment itself. To examine this question, IFREMER has set up a program called Impact des Grands Aménagements (IGA). It has evolved according to the results obtained and now integrates the specificity of each site in a global program common to all. The nature and the problems of impact... |

Within the framework of the study on cup oyster breeding in the Arcachon Basin (IFREMER's SURGIBA Programme, co-financed by Europe, the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the Regional Council of Gironde and the Arcachon Basin's inter-communal Syndicate), some pesticides have been researched in the main waterways and in the waters of several of the Basin's zones (Figure 1), during the summer months (June to September) from 1999 to 2003 inclusive (Auby and Maurer, 2004). The presence of a certain number of molecules, mainly from herbicides, was found in the waters and it has generally been possible to identify their source. Certain substances come from agricultural uses or park maintenance; others are from nautical sources (anti-fouling paint for protecting the... |

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (Figure 1.1) constitute a unique ecosystem with high biological diversity. Their natural resources provide a substantial economic support for the region: in addition to the fishery industry, which has ensured food security to many people of the region and created jobs for others, tourism is an ever growing and increasingly important industry for commerce and other economic activities. Hence, the marine environment should be well protected from the adverse impacts of pollution to ensure the sustainable use of its resources and good health of its users. Continuous degradation of the marine environment poses a threat to public health through the contamination of seafood, direct contact and digestion of polluted water. Damage to... |

This document provides a regiona loverview of land-based sources and activities and their impacts on the marine, coastal and associated freshwater environments in the East African region. The overview covers three coastal states [Keya, United Republic of Tanzania (Tanzania) and Mozambique] and five island States [Madagascar, Mauritius, the Islamic Federal Republic of Comoros (Comoros), the Zanzibar state of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Seychelles]. The rapidly expanding coastal populations of the region exert ever-increasing pressure on coastal habitats and resources. Land-based anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and industry, coastal urbanization, tourism and rock/mineral extraction, disturb natural condition and processes, degranding... |

A total of 807 Dipturus chilensis specimens (448 males and 359 females) caught in research cruises performed by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) during 2011 and 2012 were analyzed. The cruises were carried out between (34°S-48°S) and 50-313 m depth. Mean size at first maturity (TL50) was estimated at 780 mm and 908 mm TL for males and females, respectively, values that represented about 80% of the respective maximum total length observed. Besides, latitudinal differences in sexual maturity estimates were detected. The total number of 4-7 reproductive seasons and 42-52 follicles or individuals of maximum annual potential fecundity estimated in this paper allow to suggest that each female would produce less than 300 eggs... |

This first issue is devoted to the use of indicators for ICAM, and is a direct result of the IOC-DFO-NOAA-CSMP International Workshop on the same topic, organised in May 2002, in Ottawa. Based on a background paper prepared by the Center for the Study of Marine Policy (University of Delaware) in preparation for the workshop, the aim of this Reference Guide is to present a literature review on the use of indicators around the world, from various programmes and projects, at global, regional, national and local scale. The need for indicators and reporting techniques which reflects the performance of coastal management projects and programmes and reveals the complex relationship that exist between coastal ecosystem health and anthropogenic activities,... |

The Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS) of Fisheries and Oceans Canada was accredited as the RNODC for drifting buoys by the IODE in January 1986. As such, MEDS archives all drifting buoy data distributed on the GTS and makes the data available to anyone who requests it. This report summarizes MEDS’ activities as the RNODC for drifting buoys during the last intersessional period. |

Patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti) is one of the predominant cartilaginous fishes of the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic Ocean). It is caught, mainly, in the coastal multispecific fishery with nearly other 30 bony and cartilaginous species. The group is known as ‘variado costero’. In this work the smoothhound abundance indices (CPUE) and standardized efforts for the 1992-2008 period in the area between 34~’S-42~’S were estimated. The General Lineal Model (GLM) and data derived from the argentine commercial fleet were used. Other aspects that could affect estimates and trends of the annual indices were also analyzed. Mean CPUE values estimated with the GLM, considered as annual standardized abundance indices, show an increasing trend as of 2000; the... |
