Marteilia refringens is a major pathogen of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis Linnaeus. Since its description, the lifecycle of this protozoan parasite has eluded discovery. Attempts to infect oysters experimentally have been unsuccessful and led to the hypothesis of a complex life-cycle involving several hosts. Knowledge of this life-cycle is of central importance in order to manage oyster disease. However, the exploration of M. refringens life-cycle has been previously limited by the detection tools available and the tremendous number of species to be screened in enzootic areas. In this study, these two restrictions were circumvented by the use of both molecular detection tools and a mesocosm with low biodiversity. Screening of the entire fauna of... |

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis was originally reared in several regions of the European waters. The tidal saline ponds on the Atlantic coasts of France were highly productive before being hit by two consecutive epizooties. Parasitic diseases were described on this species, both of them leading 10 economic losses, as heavy mortalities have usually been recorded before the oysters reach the commercial size. Repeated experiments showed that the two diseases, Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae are still active in this environment. Recently, some evidences were given that haemocytoblasts of Crassostrea gigas had the ability to lyze the Bonamia cells. Therefore, in an experiment of contiguous culture of the two species of oysters, the growth, mortality and... |

A systematic surveillance progam conducted since 1980 along the coasts of Britanny has followed the evolution and epidemiological state of the natural O. eulis oyster beds and seed areas in the intertidal zones and deep water. Presently, Marteilia refringens exists endemically in Brittany estuaries ; the rate and degree of infestation varies from year to year depending on the hydrological conditions and the geographical region. In no case, however, is the return of flat oyster culture envisoned. Bonamia ostreae is present not only in the estuaries but also in the deep-water rearing areas (Baie de Quiberon, Cancale, Baie de St Brieuc). The infestation increases with age, but also depends on the quantity of the stock and the culture practises. In particular,... |

Marteilia refringens causes marteiliosis in oysters, mussels and other bivalve molluscs. This parasite previously comprised two species, M. refringens and Marteilia maurini, which were synonymized in 2007 and subsequently referred to as M. refringens ‘O-type’ and ‘M-type’. O-type has caused mass mortalities of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. We used high throughput sequencing and histology to intensively screen flat oysters and mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the UK, Sweden and Norway for infection by both types and to generate multi-gene datasets to clarify their genetic distinctiveness. Mussels from the UK, Norway and Sweden were more frequently polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive for M-type (75/849) than oysters (11/542). We did not detect O-type in... |
