First report of goniodomin A production by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax developing in southern Mediterranean (Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia) ArchiMer
Triki, Habiba Zmerli; Laabir, Mohamed; Moeller, Peter; Chomerat, Nicolas; Daly-yahia, Ons Kefi.
The dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax is widely distributed around the world including the Mediterranean waters. The objectives of this study were to determine the morphology and phylogenic affiliation of A. pseudogonyaulax strain isolated from Bizerte Lagoon (Mediterranean waters, Tunisia) and investigate its toxicity. Molecular analyses confirmed the morphological identification of the isolated strain (APBZ12) as A. pseudogonyaulax. Moreover, it showed that it is 100% identical with strains of this species found in New Zealand, Japan, China and North Sea (Norway and Denmark) suggesting that this species is cosmopolitan. Until now, no toxin studies have been conducted on fully characterized (morphologically and molecularly) A. pseudogonyaulax....

How can we quantify impacts of contaminants in marine ecosystems? The ICON project ArchiMer
Hylland, Ketil; Burgeot, Thierry; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Lang, Thomas; Robinson, Craig D.; Svavarsson, Jorundur; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Gubbins, Matthew J..
An international workshop on marine integrated contaminant monitoring (ICON) was organised to test a framework on integrated environmental assessment and simultaneously assess the status of selected European marine areas. Biota and sediment were sampled in selected estuarine, inshore and offshore locations encompassing marine habitats from Iceland to the Spanish Mediterranean. The outcome of the ICON project is reported in this special issue as method-oriented papers addressing chemical analyses, PAH metabolites, oxidative stress, biotransformation, lysosomal membrane stability, genotoxicity, disease in fish, and sediment assessment, as well as papers assessing specific areas. This paper provides a background and introduction to the ICON project, by...

Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Chessel, Daniel; Bertrand, Jacques.
The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient...

Analyse de l’activité de pêche aux filets maillants dérivants de moins de 2,5 km en Méditerranée et caractéristiques techniques des engins ArchiMer
Sacchi, Jacques; Lespagnol, Patrick.

During the European Commission's Framework Six Programme, HERMES, we investigated three main areas along the European margin, each characterized by the presence of seep-related structures exhibiting different intensity of activity and biological diversity. These areas are: (1) the Nordic margin with the Hakon Mosby mud volcano and many pockmarks, (2) the Gulf of Cadiz, and (3) the eastern Mediterranean with its hundreds of mud volcanoes and brine pool structures. One of the main goals of the HERMES project was to unravel the biodiversity associated with these seep-associated ecosystems, and to understand their driving forces and functions, using an integrated approach. Several multidisciplinary research cruises to these three areas provided evidence of...

Typologie de la flottille chalutière du port de Sète par une méthode de segmentation ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques.
This work aims to define a typology of trawler f1eet in Sète, the main fishing harbour along the French Mediterranean coast, using several multivariate analysis methods. The fishing ships taken to account are represented by annual profiles of landing specific compositions. Five fishing strategies have been identified. A segmentation method using symbolic objects allows a formaI characterisation of the different strategies. These strategies are studied according to several general characteristics usually used for management rules elaboration (power, length, ship age). The typological analysis allows to characterise two main exploitation ways, one directed to the catch of a few species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus), the other characterised by...

Highly contrasted responses of Mediterranean octocorals to climate change along a depth gradient ArchiMer
Pivotto, I. D.; Nerini, D.; Masmoudi, M.; Kara, H.; Chaoui, L.; Aurelle, D..
Climate change has a strong impact on marine ecosystems, including temperate species. Analysing the diversity of thermotolerance levels within species along with their genetic structure enables a better understanding of their potential response to climate change. We performed this integrative study on the Mediterranean octocoral Eunicella cavolini, with samples from different depths and by means of a common garden experiment. This species does not host photosynthetic Symbiodinium, enabling us to focus on the cnidarian response. We compared the thermotolerance of individuals from 20 m and 40 m depths from the same site and with replicates from the same colony. On the basis of an innovative statistical analysis of necrosis kinetics and risk, we demonstrated...

Pharmaceuticals, alkylphenols and pesticides in Mediterranean coastal waters: Results from a pilot survey using passive samplers ArchiMer
Munaron, Dominique; Tapie, Nathalie; Budzinski, Helene; Andral, Bruno; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
21 pharmaceuticals, 6 alkylphenols and 27 hydrophilic pesticides and biocides were investigated using polar organic contaminant integrative samplers (POCIS) during a large-scale study of contamination of French Mediterranean coastal waters. Marine and transitional water-bodies, defined under the EU Water Framework Directive were monitored. Our results show that the French Mediterranean coastal waters were contaminated with a large range of emerging contaminants, detected at low concentrations during the summer season. Caffeine, carbamazepine, theophilline and terbutaline were detected with a detection frequency higher than 83% in the coastal waters sampled, 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-OP) and 4-nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO) were detected...

Indices of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus thynnus) abundance derived from sale records of French purse seine catches in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Labelle, Marc; Hoch, Thierry; Liorzou, Bernard; Bigot, Jean-louis.
Sampling operations are not routinely conducted in France to monitor the landings of bluefin tuna caught by purse seiners in the Mediterranean. The length, weight and age frequencies of bluefin caught by this fleet are predicted based on sale records, length-at-age and weight-length relations, trends in fishing and natural mortality rates, and other ancillary data. The resulting length frequencies are more accurate than those predicted by Liorzou and Bigot (1992) using a simpler algorithm, and are spread more evenly across adjacent size classes. Catch-per-unil-effort (CPUE) was expressed as the numbers of age 2 bluefin caught per successful seine fishing trip in the Gulf of Lions fall fishery. CPUE indices were computed by several methods, and compared to...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of a Zostera noltii dominated community over a period of fluctuating salinity in a shallow lagoon, Southern France ArchiMer
Charpentier, Aude; Grillas, P; Lescuyer, F; Coulet, E; Auby, Isabelle.
The consequences of a sudden decrease in water salinity on a macrophyte community dominated by the marine species Zostera noltii were investigated in a shallow coastal lagoon (Southern France). The expected change in the community assemblage was a competitive displacement of Z. noltii by Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa. However, the results of an eight-year survey did not validate this hypothesis. Zostera noltii remained dominant after three years at low salinity (ca. 5) and then suddenly disappeared within one year. The decline of Z. noltii was not associated with an increase of other species. The maximum depth colonized by all species decreased, suggesting that light availability became a limiting factor for the aquatic vegetation. The high...

Pelagic habitats in the Mediterranean Sea: A review of Good Environmental Status (GES) determination for plankton components and identification of gaps and priority needs to improve coherence for the MSFD implementation ArchiMer
Varkitzi, I.; France, J.; Basset, A.; Cozzoli, F.; Stanca, E.; Zervoudaki, S.; Giannakourou, A.; Assimakopoulou, G.; Venetsanopoulou, A.; Mozetic, P.; Tinta, T.; Skejic, S.; Vidjak, O.; Cadiou, Jean-francois; Pagou, K..
At present there is no consistent approach for the definition of Good Environmental Status (GES) and targets in the Mediterranean Sea, especially for Biodiversity Descriptors, according to the Article 12 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The use of plankton indicators in the Mediterranean Sea refers mostly to pelagic habitats in coastal waters and to case studies connected with environmental pressures, e.g. in the Adriatic, Aegean etc. The aim of this review is to study the existing biodiversity indicators for different plankton groups in order to compare GES definitions for the Biodiversity Descriptor and identify the relevant gaps and priority needs to improve coherence for the MSFD implementation across the Mediterranean. For these...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...

Etude morphologique du loup Dicentrarchus labrax L. de la region de Sete ArchiMer
Barnabe, Gilbert.
Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961.

Donnees preliminaires sur les caracteres biometriques des anchois Engraulis encrasicolus (Linne, 1758) des cotes de Tunisie et du Lac Ichkeul ArchiMer
Quignard, J.p; Hamdouni, T; Zaouali, J.
Researchers have studied the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, the number of branchiospines and of vertebrae of the anchovies of the Tunisian coast. Regarding the number of vertebrae, the anchovies of the North West belong to the 'West Mediterranean' group and those of the North East and South East to the 'East Mediterranean' group, according to Fage's classification. The anchovies found in Lake Ishkeul are well individualised morphologically and biologically speaking and could be classified in the large group of the anchovies living in Mediterranean brackish waters; the number of their vertebrae is slightly inferior to that of the groups living in the neighbouring sea waters.

Structure et diversité génétique des populations de raie bouclée en Méditerranée ArchiMer
Lecuyer, Romain.
Chondrichtyes are threatened by several disturbances among which is the significant development of fisheries during the 20th century. The Mediterranean sea has long been fished and keeps being intensely so by several nations that seek cost-effectiveness or food security above all. Such a background does not ease data recording and sharing for research purposes. This study mainly aims at assessing the population structure and status of thornback ray so as to avoid its deterioration due to bottom-trawl fisheries pressure, hardly reversible even with a sudden sound management. To do so, an extensive panel of nuclear genetic markers has been developed to analyze underlying structure along with differenciation and genetic diversity of Mediterranean populations....

Preliminary appraisal of wave power prospects in Lebanon ArchiMer
Aoun, N. S.; Harajli, H. A.; Queffeulou, Pierre.
The present work is the first attempt to methodologically assess the wave power prospects off the coast of Lebanon. Working around 1.5 years of buoy data, measurements for the significant wave height and wave period were inputted to establish a joint frequency table that was related to power matrixes of three selected wave energy converters. The spatial and temporal representability of the analysis was extended through assessing altimeter data of H-s over 20 years and for three points off the coast of Lebanon; southern Lebanon, buoy location off the coast of Beirut, and northern Lebanon. The altimeter data indicated that H-s values as measured through the buoy is within 1 standard deviation of the offshore regional mean, however adopting the regional mean...

Balneola vulgaris gen. nov., sp nov., a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes from the north-western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Urios, Laurent; Agogue, Hélène; Lesongeur, Francoise; Stackebrandt, Erko; Lebaron, Philippe.
A novel aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium, named 13IX/A01/164(T), was isolated from surface waters in the coastal north-western Mediterranean Sea. Cells were motile, straight rods, 2-5 mu m long and 0-2 mu m wide, and formed orange colonies on marine agar medium. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 13IX/A01/164T was 42 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain in the phylum Bacteroidetes within the family Crenotrichaceae. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison and physiological and biochemical characteristics, this isolate represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Balneola vulgaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Balneola vulgaris is 13IX/A01/164T (=DSM 17893T=CIP...
