Priorizacao de ações de pesquisa. Infoteca-e
GALVAO, A. P. M..

An analysis of seafood consumption survey methods in France. ArchiMer
Girard, Sophie; Mariojouls, Catherine; Paquotte, Philippe; Wisner-bourgeois, Claude.
(Not controled OCR) The different statistical data sources available for seafood I consumption analysis in France belong to three types : the apparent consumption estimated on the basis of a balance between production and trade, used at national scale and for international comparison, the data in value published by the national Institute for economic statistics, aggregating food balance sheet, and economic results of inquiries about the activities of the branch industries, and the household consumption estimated through consumers' panels. A critical and historical analysis of the different available data series is presented, with focus on the major difficulties when interpreting and cross-checking the data (series breaking-nomenclature items, range of...

Long-term variability of the Abra alba community in the southern bight of the North Sea ArchiMer
Carpenter, P; Dewarumez, Jm; Lepretre, A.
The Abra alba community from the Gravelines area has been studied since 1976. During this period, sudden and unpredictable variations of the species composition have been observed. These important changes affect a limited number of species without changing the bionomical structure of the community. The species in question are found to be characteristic of this community, and are the more abundant ones. Multivariate statistical methods were used to study quantitative data on the benthic population collected from 1978 to 1992. This analysis was performed in association with air temperature data. Results showed the existence of a six- or seven-year cycle, and this is confirmed by the observation of two complete periods. This cycle, which is found to be...

Determining the lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition of aquatic organisms has been of major interest in trophic ecology, aquaculture, and nutrition for over half a century. Although protocols for lipid analysis are well-described, their application to aquatic sciences often requires modifications to adapt to field conditions and to sample type. Here, we present the current state of knowledge of methods dedicated to both marine and freshwater lipid analyses, from sampling to data treatment. We review: (i) sample preservation, storage and transport protocols, and their effects on lipids, (ii) lipid extraction, separation of polar and neutral lipids, derivatization, and detection methods, and (iii) available tools for the statistical analysis of FA...

Comparing marine primary production estimates through different methods and development of conversion equations ArchiMer
Regaudie-de-gioux, Aurore; Lasternas, Sébastien; Agustí, Susana; Duarte, Carlos M..
Numerous studies have compared the rates of primary production using various techniques at specific locations and times. However, these comparisons are local and cannot be used to compare or scale rates of primary production using different methods across ocean basins or seasonal time scales. Here, we quantify the range in rates of primary production derived using different techniques and provide equations that allow conversions of estimates between different methods. We do so on the basis of a compilation of data on volumetric estimates of primary production rates concurrently estimated with at least two different methods. We observed that the comparison of estimates of marine phytoplankton primary production derived from different methods reveals very...

Methodology for Single-Cell Genetic Analysis of Planktonic Foraminifera for Studies of Protist Diversity and Evolution ArchiMer
Weiner, Agnes K. M.; Morard, Raphael; Weinkauf, Manuel F. G.; Darling, Kate F.; André, Aurore; Quillévéré, Frédéric; Ujiie, Yurika; Douady, Christophe J.; De Vargas, Colomban; Kucera, Michal.
Single-cell genetic analysis is an essential method to investigate the biodiversity and evolutionary ecology of marine protists. In protist groups that do not reproduce under laboratory conditions, this approach provides the only means to directly associate molecular sequences with cell morphology. The resulting unambiguous taxonomic identification of the DNA sequences is a prerequisite for barcoding and analyses of environmental metagenomic data. Extensive single-cell genetic studies have been carried out on planktonic foraminifera over the past 20 years to elucidate their phylogeny, cryptic diversity, biogeography, and the relationship between genetic and morphological variability. In the course of these investigations, it has become evident that genetic...

Conservation des laminaires apres sechage a tres hautes temperatures. ArchiMer
Perez, René.
Laminaria digitata is the only brown alga used in the French alginate industry. Air-dried and flash-dried (in a current of air at 200 to 850 degree C) algae were compared. Quality was assessed viscometrically and the results expressed graphically. Quality after drying and keeping properties were found better in flash-dried algae and the method was shown to be the cheapest of methods currently available.

Comparaison de méthodes d'évaluation de la production secondaire d'une population de l'annélide polychète Ditrupa arietina (O.F. Muller) ArchiMer
Medernach, L; Gremare, A.
We compared the ability of three direct methods (increment summation, loss summation and instantaneous growth rate coefficient), the size-frequency method, and eight indirect methods (Banse and Mosher, Benke, Brey, Edgar, Morin and Bourassa, Plante and Downing, Robertson and Schwinghamer et al.) to measure or to predict the secondary production of a Mediterranean population of the polychaete Ditrupa arietina. This comparison was carried out both on the 1994 cohort during its two-year lifespan and on the entire population during the two years of the study (1994-1996). Our results showed that all three direct methods are more or less equivalent. Results referring to the year 1994-1995 showed a strong overestimation of the actual production by the size...

The Terebelliformia-Recent Developments and Future Directions ArchiMer
Hutchings, Pat; Carrerette, Orlemir; Nogueira, João M. M.; Hourdez, Stephane; Lavesque, Nicolas.
Terebelliformia comprises a large group of sedentary polychaetes which live from the intertidal to the deep sea. The majority live in tubes and are selective deposit feeders. This study synthesises the current knowledge of this group, including their distribution, in the different biogeographic regions. We highlight the new methodologies being used to describe them and the resolution of species complexes occurring in the group. The main aim of this review is to highlight the knowledge gaps and to stimulate research in those directions, which will allow for knowledge of their distribution and abundances to be used by ecologists and managers.

Flume tanks are becoming increasingly important research tools in aquatic ecology, to link biological to hydrodynamical processes. There is no such thing as a "standard flume tank", and no flume tank is suitable for every type of research question. A series of experiments has been carried out to characterise and compare the hydrodynamic characteristics of 12 different flume tanks that are designed specifically for biological research. These facilities are part of the EU network BioFlow. The flumes could be divided into four basic design types: straight, racetrack, annular and field flumes. In each facility, two vertical velocity profiles were measured: one at 0.05 m s(-1) and one at 0.25 m s(-1). In those flumes equipped with Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters...

Estrogen Receptors in Immunohistochemically Stained Slides: Comparing Subjective and Computerized Evaluation Methods International Journal of Morphology
Millas,Ieda; Barros,Mirna Duarte; Curcio,Daniella Franco; Buck,Hudson Sousa; Liquidato,Bianca Maria.
Immunohistochemistry is a specific and sensitive staining method for detection of several proteins. One important function of this method is to help us on the diagnosis of the presence of specific receptors as the estrogen receptors. The aim of this study was to compare two different methods to evaluate immunohistochemical staining intensity to detect the presence of ER in the nasal mucosa tissue: one using a digital system and the other through conventional direct microscopy observation. Sixty two stained samples were observed and analyzed under optic microscopy by three specialized professionals, who have graded intensity from: absent, mild, moderate and intense staining. Afterwards, an objective measurement was obtained by a relative optical density...

Faecal analysis as a complementary approach to the study of feeding ecology in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus Linnaeus, 1758) Mastozool. neotrop.
Silvestre,Saulo M; Dantas,José O; da Rocha,Patrício Adriano; Beltrão-Mendes,Raone; Ferrari,Stephen F.
We evaluated the application of faecal analysis as a complementary approach to direct observation in the study of Callithrix jacchus feeding ecology. Our results indicate that animal foods may be more commonly consumed (based on faecal samples-FS; 61.48% of diet) than previously thought (e.g., only 22.83% based on observational data-OD). Whereas FS provide better data on animal prey, it was less effective than OD in identifying plant items. Six insect orders-including Dermaptera and two hymenopteran families, not previously recorded in marmoset diet-were identified through FS, which is thus shown to be useful in characterizing diet, especially in insectivorous primates.
