Cardoso,Josiane Teresinha; Lazzari,Sonia Maria Noemberg; Carvalho,Regina Célia Zonta de.
The species Sitobion graminis Takahashi, 1950 (Hemiptera, Aphididae) was first detected in Brazil in 1998, in Curitiba, Paraná state, associated with the grass species Erianthus sp., Calamagrotis sp. and Paspalum urvilei. Both the field-collected and laboratory-reared specimens presented a noticeable intrapopulational variation in body and appendix length and in dorso-abdominal sclerotization. This species has been recorded in Malaysia, New Guinea, India, Philippines and Africa, where it colonizes several species of Poaceae. S. graminis differs from other Sitobion species from Brazil associated with grasses, as it presents black cauda and siphunculi and exhibits a constriction in the base of the last rostral segment. Biological data were obtained in the...

Comparative morphology of the mandibles of female polistine social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silveira,Orlando Tobias; Santos Jr.,José Nazareno Araújo dos.
Comparative morphology of the mandibles of female polistine social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae). Diversity of mandibular forms in female polistines is explored and compared among 116 species of all polistine genera. Inferences about function are made and discussed based on observed form differences. Mandible length and width measurements are analyzed for a subset of polistine species plus two vespines and two eumenines. A variable expressing the ratio between these variables is also considered in morphometric analyses. The following mechanical interactions among mandible structural elements are highlighted: opposition and crossing of mandibles' apical teeth at the middle of the closing trajectory; shearing action of the apical teeth against...

Morphological variability and distribution of the exotic Asian Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides (Copepoda: Cyclopoida): in the Neotropical region Rev. Bras. Zool.
Suárez-Morales,Eduardo; Mercado-Salas,Nancy F; Morales-Ramírez,Álvaro.
From a series of biological samples collected from different freshwater environments in Costa Rica, Central America, the exotic Asian cyclopoid Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides Harada, 1931 was identified. We analyzed the morphology and appendage ornamentation of different Neotropical populations of this species, including specimens from Honduras, southeastern Mexico, and Costa Rica. We also examined Asian specimens from Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and performed a comparison of the Neotropical and Asian populations including a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The Neotropical and Asian specimens show subtle morphological variations in the antennules, antennae, mandibles, swimming legs 1-4, and fifth legs. Some characters in the Neotropical...

Status taxonômico e distribucional do complexo Eumops bonariensis (Chiroptera: Molossidae) no sul do Brasil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bernardi,Itiberê P.; Miranda,João M. D.; Passos,Fernando C..
The taxonomic status and the geographical distribution of the specimens from southern Brazil previously identified as members of the Eumops bonariensis (Peters, 1874) species complex are here reviewed based on specimens deposited in collections of the states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. The results of an investigation of diagnostic morphological characters and a multivariate morphometrics analysis suggest the recognition of two forms, E. bonariensis and E. patagonicus Thomas, 1924, thus altering considerably the distributional scenario of these forms in southern Brazil.

Notes on the lesser white-lined bat, Saccopteryx leptura (Schreber) (Chiroptera, Emballonuridae), from southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Nogueira,Marcelo R.; Peracchi,Adriano L.; Pol,André.
Saccopteryx leptura (Schreber, 1774) is reported from two new localities in southeastern Brazil, both in Atlantic forest remains in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Analysisof food material showed that individuals from both localities had preyedon insects in the order Hymenoptera. Cheek contents were available from one specimen, and in this case identification of the food item (flying ants) achieved generic level (Pheidole Westwood, 1841). Aspects in the social behavior observed in a colony suggest that the same traits documented in Central American populations (small colonies, monogamic mating system, and retention of young for up to a year in the parental unit) may also characterize this species in the southern most part of its range. In both external and...

Distribution of Oecomys catherinae Thomas, 1909 (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in northeastern Brazil with karyotypical and morphometrical notes Biota Neotropica
Asfora,Paulo Henrique; Palma,Alexandre Ramlo Torre; Astúa,Diego; Geise,Lena.
The genus Oecomys Thomas, 1906 is currently composed of 16 species with unclear taxonomy and poorly known geographic limits. O. catherinae Thomas, 1909 is known to occur within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest from the states of Santa Catarina to Pernambuco (where the northernmost previously known specimen of Oecomys in the Atlantic forest was recorded), and along riverine forest into the Cerrado. To gain a greater understanding of its geographical and ecological distribution (mainly in Northeastern Brazil) and of its taxonomic characterization, we provide a short review of karyotypical and morphometrical data from specimens collected within the distribution range of the species. Specimens presented 2n = 60 and AN varying between 62 and 64. A table with...

Morphometrical aspects of adults of Gratiana spadicea (Klug) Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) from Southern Uruguay BJB
PONCE DE LEÓN,R.; FAILLA,G.; MORELLI,E..
Morphometrical data of pronotum, elytra, and total length of adult males and females of a Gratiana spadicea population from southern Uruguay are given. Descriptions and illustrations of aedeagus and spermatheca are provided for the first time. Females were significatively larger than males in total length. The coefficient of variation of the aedeagus measures ranged from 3.7% to 7.7%, and those of the spermatheca from 4.1% to 11.2%. The best value for the coefficient of determination was obtained for the reciprocal regression (1/Y = a + bX) of the total length of the aedeagus versus the length from the apex to the basal region of the median lobe.

Analysis of the echolocation calis and morphometry of a population of Myotis chiloensis (Waterhouse, 1838) from the southern Chilean temperate forest Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ossa,Gonzalo; Ibarra,José Tomás; Barboza,Kathrin; Hernández,Felipe; Gálvez,Nicolás; Laker,Jerry; Bonacic,Cristián.
Echolocation is characteristic of bats of the suborder Microchiroptera. Though recent studies of echolocation calis in Latin America have generated significant advances in knowledge about distribution, habitat use and ecology of bats, the recording and analysis of bat calis is barely known in Chile. As a first step in studies on the ecology of the endemic Chilean myotis bat (Myotis chiloensis), we carried out morphometric measures and analyzed echolocation calis in a rural site near Pucón (39°15'S 17°W) in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile. During January 2009, we obtained 22 records from captured and 75 records from fiying individuals. The analysis of calis in searching phase showed that the terminal frequency for this species is 43.4 ±1.2 kHz, with...
