Herpesviruses associated with mortalities among Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in France-Comparative study ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Cochennec, Nathalie; Maffart, Patricia.
Sporadic mortalities were reported in june and july of 1992 and 1993 among batches of hatchery-reared larval Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, and at the beginning of July and in August of 1993 among five batches of 3-7 month old young spats, C. gigas. Observations with transmission electron microscope showed the presence of herpes-like virus particles in infected larvae and young spats. The viruses observed in diseased larvae and affected young spat oysters were very similar. Elevated temperature and crowding may increase susceptibility of oysters to these herpes-like virus infections.

Problems and perspectives of the pearl oyster aquaculture in French Polynesia. ArchiMer
Cabral, P.
The first attempt to obtain artificial pearls from the black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia dates back to 1963. The pearl oyster culture has grown quickly especially since the eighties. This industry is now the first exportation in value of French Polynesia. 19 atolls of the Tuamotus island have at this time one or more farms and this activity has more and more attractiveness. The rise of this industry has consequently a lot of socio-ecomic repercussions on these atolls. However, as a young industry, the technics and the development are not always controlled and a lot of problems appeared these last years.

This study is the second part of a former report rapport Ifremer DRV/RST/RA/LCB/2002-08 dealing with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : the first report relied on a survey achieved in july 200l, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. Il is now completed by a last campaign of diving in october 2002, on 7 parcels out of the 18, still bearing the initial oysters. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according...

Réseau d'évaluation de la croissance de l'huître creuse sur les côtes françaises (REMORA). Résultats des stations de BRETAGNE (Année 2000) ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Claude, Serge; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Yvette.
Every year, from March to December, the IFREMER / REMORA network carries out a survey of mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year ciass ; and "adults" = two-years class), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. In Brittany, this network includes 11 points, to which regional points can be added (15 in 2000). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 2000 showed rather low mortality rates, excepted mortality of several oysters when transfered to the sea. Several areas however had higher mortality rates (> 20%) : l'Arguenon, Morlaix, les Abers, Pen-Bé and Le Croisic. 2000 is a year of good growth in South Brittany (72.8 g in December), more average in North Brittany...

Analyse des résultats d'une ferme d'élevage de crevettes sur 20 années : SODACAL 1984-2004. "Elasticité" de la capacité de production d'un écosystème bassin crevetticole ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc.
SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic...

Ostreid herpes virus 1 infection in families of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, during a summer mortality outbreak: Differences in viral DNA detection and quantification using real-time PCR ArchiMer
Sauvage, Christopher; Pepin, Jean-francois; Lapegue, Sylvie; Boudry, Pierre; Renault, Tristan.
Ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1) infections, notably reported in Europe and the USA, are closely associated with significant mortalities of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, especially during its early stages of life. In summer 2006, we monitored mortality by strict daily verification of three full-sib families of oysters reared under common conditions. We quantified OsHV-1 using real-time PCR in dead and living individuals during and after a mortality event. Mortality events were severe and brief, but significantly different between tested families (cumulative mortality ranging from 1.2 to 49%). Real-time PCR assays revealed different viral DNA loads in dead individuals from different families (P < 0.001). Moreover, the mean level of infection...

The monitoring network IFREMER /REMORA is assessing, on a yearly basis, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster batches ("juveniles" = one-year old ; and "adults" = two-years old), distributed among various stations of the main French oyster areas. Samplings are carried out in March, June, September and December. This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale) ; it must not be considered as an accurate estimation of professional oyster ongrowings. In 2001, mortality mainly occured in Summer on "adults" in baie des Veys (Normandy) and on juveniles in Cancale and Pénerf (Brittany) and in Fouras and Marennes (Poitou-Charentes). With an average individual weigh of 59 g in December, 2001 has been a...

L'adaptation ecophysiologique et sanitaire de l'ecrevisse turque Astacus leptodactylus a des milieux saumatres: Contribution a l'astaciculture ArchiMer

This influence of salt media on different aspects of biological cycle and on most common pathogenic agents of Turkish freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus is investigated survival and growing of juveniles O super(+) and intermediary individuals 1 super(+) are also studied. Total osmotic metabolism and reproduction, have been recorded. It appears that youngest individuals are particularly sensitive to low salinities (7 ppt.). Intermediary ones are more resistant nevertheless salinity does not improve neither survival nor growing. Copulation, laying and pleopod egg fixation are particularly affected by salt waters. The only promising application of salinity parameter on astaciculture could be whether prophylactic or curative treatment with concentrated...

Ropert, Michel; Blin, J.l.; Cornette, Florence; Pacary, S; Pien, S; Leganeur, E; Kopp, Joel; Richard, O.
Since 1998, a growth and quality monitoring study of reared molluscs has been developped as part of a close collaboration between the Shellfish Research Laboratory of Normandy (IFREMER Port-en-Bessin, Calvados) and the SMEL (Syndicat Mixte d'Expansion du Littoral) Experimental Centre (Blainville, Manche). REMONOR (REseau MOllusque de NORmandie) is based on the experience gained through the national monitoring network REMORA, which protocol has been entirely applied. Adults and spat of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas were placed in 13 stations all along the oysters rearing areas of Normandy. These oysters had the same origin and history (i.e. age and weight) until they were dispatched on the 13 stations. 4 essential criteria were used to monitor rearing...

Mapping QTL for resistance to summer mortality in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Sauvage, Christopher; Heurtebise, Serge; De Koning, D.; Haley, Chris; Boudry, Pierre; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Summer mortalities of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas have been described in the literature for decades. One solution to overcome this problem would be to select animals more tolerant to summer mortalities, as this trait was shown to be highly heritable (Degrémont, 2003). Such selective breeding would strongly benefit from the identification of markers associated to the resistance to allow the development of markers assisted selection. Recently, a set of a new kinds of markers (SNPs) have been developed in the Pacific oyster. These markers were identified and characterized in several genes involved in the immune response and energetic pathways (Sauvage, 2007). In this context, the mapping of SNPs, of 16 new EST-SSR based markers and of...

Étude dynamique de la population de Nucula nucleus (bivalve, protobranche) du cap de Flamanville (Manche) ArchiMer
Chardy, Pierre; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Hamon, Dominique.
Annual production and turnover rate of biomass are estimated on a population of the bivalve, Nucula nucleus, dominant on the sublittoral area of Cap de Flamanville (Manche). Investigations on reproductive cycle established on the gonads maturity index over one year indicate a single spawning period in autumn. Age is determined from a study of the ring pattern on the shells, in which annual signification is outlined. The Von Bertalanffy curve and the exponential function give an adequate description of growth and mortality. The studied population is considered as near a theoretical population with constant recruitment and mortality; this simplification is discussed through the comparison of the demographie structures obtained in the same station in 1978 and...

Simonne, Charlotte; Pien, S; Hugonnet, Virginie; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ropert, Michel; Kopp, Joel; Richard, O.
The national REMORA network is targeted on the studies of growth, flesh quality and mortality of a sample of cupped oyster Crassostrea gigasdistributed on 9 stations along the coast of Normandy. As a better precision is needed for regional purpose, 7 new stations have been added. A total number of 16 stations is now sampled from Chausey to Meuvaines. Weak rates of mortality have been noticed in 2002 on both adults (7%) and spat (6 %). These rates are the weakest ever seen. The mortality rates in the Baie des veys were less than 10 %. This rearing area shows usually a much higher mortality level. Growth rates were noticed weaker than usual. They slowly decline from 1999. From Mach to December, the growth rate of adults has been computed to 0,21 %/day (for a...

Age, growth and mortality of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis (Central Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Khaldi, Asma; Chater, Ines; Elleboode, Romain; Mahé, Kelig; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
Despite the high commercial value of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis, biological data on its age, growth and exploitation rate are lacking. With the aim of estimating growth parameters, 516 individuals, ranging from 6–27.5 cm total length and from 3.5–293.5 g total weight, were collected from the artisanal fishing fleet between February 2014 and July 2016. The somatic growth presented a positive allometry and was described by the equation TW = 6.54 10−3TL3.213. The monthly analysis of the marginal increment of the otoliths revealed that only one annulus was deposited per year. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L∞ = 30.18 cm, k = 0.303 year−1 and t0 = −1.42 years. Total and natural...

Winter mortalities of the manila clam rl1d1 tapes philippinarum along the french atlantic coasts : biochemical and ecophysio-logical aspects. For some years, high mortalities on Manila clam's breeding occured at the end of Winter on Atlantic coasts. The ecophysioIogicaI survey of population was performed using a ground culture technique. This permitted to characterize the conditions related with mortalities such as a loss in dry weight and a decrease of metabol ic reserves. A comparison of biochemical composition was conducted during the occurence of mortality on different sites along the Atlantic coast, and in different ecosystems (tidal land, oysters ponds).

A study of the growth and mortality of the European oyster Ostrea edulis , including the effects of Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae , was carried out in three oceanic areas in the Bay of Arcachon from May 1989 to February 1991. One-year-old spat, free from disease were used for the trials. Six months after beginning the trials, Marteilia refringens had severely infested the cultures. Although Bonamia ostreae was found during the first year, the rate of infestation was low. In the second year bonamiasis increased and high mortality (> 60%) occurred in Ostrea edulis populations. Although the growth of the oysters was good, their condition index was generally poor. Moreover, shell perforations by Polydora sp. were observed. The influence of...
