Host-parasite interaction and impact of mite infection on mosquito population Rev. Bras. entomol.
Atwa,Atwa A.; Bilgrami,Anwar L.; Al-Saggaf,Ahmad I.M..
ABSTRACT During the present study, the host-parasite relationship between mosquitoes and parasitic mites was investigated. The 8954 individuals of male and female mosquitoes belonging to 26 genera: seven each of Aedes and Culex, six of Anopheles and one each of Toxorhynchites, Coquillettidia and Uranotaenia were collected from 200 sites. The male and female mosquitoes were collected from the State of Uttar Pradesh, located at 26.8500° N, 80.9100° E in North India by deploying Carbon dioxide-baited and gravid traps. The intensity of mite's infection, type and number of mites attached to mosquitoes, mite's preference for body parts and host sexes were the parameters used to determine host-parasite relationship. Eight species of mites: Arrenurus acuminatus,...

Impact of small variations in temperature and humidity on the reproductive activity and survival of Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Costa,Ethiene Arruda Pedrosa de Almeida; Santos,Eloína Maria de Mendonça; Correia,Juliana Cavalcanti; Albuquerque,Cleide Maria Ribeiro de.
In short space of time increase in temperature and rainfall can affect vector populations and, consequently, the diseases for them transmitted. The present study analyzed the effect of small temperature and humidity variations on the fecundity, fertility and survival of Aedes aegypti. These parameters were analyzed using individual females at temperatures ranging from 23 to 27 °C (mean 25 °C); 28 to 32 °C (mean 30 °C) and 33 to 37 °C (mean 35 ºC) associated to 60±8% and 80±6% relative humidity. Females responded to an increase in temperature by reducing egg production, oviposition time and changing oviposition patterns. At 25 ºC and 80% relative humidity, females survived two-fold more and produced 40% more eggs when compared to those kept at 35 ºC and 80%...

Characterization of artificial larval habitats of Anopheles darlingi (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Brazilian Central Amazon Rev. Bras. entomol.
Arcos,Adriano Nobre; Ferreira,Francisco Augusto da Silva; Cunha,Hillândia Brandão da; Tadei,Wanderli Pedro.
ABSTRACT Mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles genus are of great relevance in the epidemiology and transmission of malaria, with their larval phase developing in clean waters in the presence of organic matter. However, the human presence in the Amazon has increasingly influenced the emergence of new breeding sites and larval habitats, such as clay pits, fish ponds and dams, among others. The objective of the study was to characterize mosquito larval habitats using the biotic and abiotic parameters in the metropolitan area of Manaus. We collected in 23 artificial larval habitats in Manaus, classified in dams, fish ponds and clay pits. Water samples, Anopheles larvae, aquatic macrophytes and limnological parameters were collected from each artificial larval...

Improvement of a test-chamber for behavioral studies on adult females of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera, Culicidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cabrini,Isaías; Andrade,Carlos Fernando S..
A test-chamber (K&L-Chamber) made of cardboard and acrylic plastic, and consisting in four sections (A, B, C and D) was developed by Klowden & Lea (1978) for Aedes aegypti host-seeking behavior studies. Later, Foster & Lutes (1985) also used an identical chamber to successfully evaluate the efficacy of electronic repellers. It was described here a modified K&L-Chamber for behavioral studies of Ae. aegypti adults. The chamber was made in polystyrene, consisting of three sections (A, B and C) and using a human hand and a fluorescent lamp as stimulus to attract the mosquitoes. The suitability of the present test-chamber was validated assaying 80 replicates and releasing 10 Ae. aegypti females in each replicate. The females were...

Setting the reference for the use of Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) as bioindicator: Ontogenetic pattern of larval head structures Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rebechi,Débora; Navarro-Silva,Mário Antônio.
Species of Chironomidae are widely used as bioindicators of water quality, since their larvae undergo morphological deformities when in contact with sediment contaminated with chemicals. In this work we endeavored to study the morphology of head structures (antennae, mandible, mentum, pecten epipharyngis, ventromental plate and premandible) throughout the development of the four larval instars of Chironomus sancticaroli Strixino & Strixino, 1981, which can be used in environmental impact analyses. Our results show that it is possible to differentiate among larval instars by doing a quantitative analysis on the number of striae on the ventromental plates. The six structures analyzed changed during larval ontogeny. These changes are part of the...

Effect of temperature on the development time and survival of preimaginal Culex hepperi (Diptera: Culicidae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Loetti,María Verónica; Burroni,Nora E.; Prunella,Paula; Schweigmann,Nicolás.
The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of temperature on the development time and survival of Culex (Culex) hepperi Casal and García, 1967. Individuals were reared in the laboratory, from the first larval stage to adult emergence, at five constant temperatures: 15, 20, 25, 30, and 33°C. The total development time was inversely related to temperature between 15 and 25°C. No differences were observed in the development time between sexes and no adults emerged at 33°C. In the larval stages III and IV, the time required for molting to the next stage increased at 30°C. The highest survival was recorded at 20°C. The more developed stages were less resistant to temperatures above and below 20°C. According to the nonlinear model of Briére, the lower...

Copper II - polar amino acid complexes: toxicity to bacteria and larvae of Aedes aegypti Anais da ABC (AABC)
RODRIGUES,THIAGO A.D.; ARRUDA,EDUARDO J. DE; FERNANDES,MAGDA F.; CARVALHO,CLAUDIO T. DE; LIMA,ALESSANDRA R.; CABRINI,ISAÍAS.
ABSTRACT Control strategies using insecticides are sometimes ineffective due to the resistance of the insect vectors. In this scenario new products must be proposed for the control of insect vectors. The complexes L-aspartate Cu (II) and L-glutamate-Cu (II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, visible ultraviolet, infrared spectroscopy and potentiometric titration. The toxicity of these complexes was analyzed in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae and Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The interaction between the ligands and the amino acid balance and the distribution of the species as a function of pH were discussed. The lethal concentration median (LC50) for Ae. aegypti larvae were: L-glutamic acid-Cu (II) -...

Dimorfismo sexual alar em Aedes scapularis (Diptera: Culicidae) Biota Neotropica
Devicari,Mariana; Lopes,Adriana Rios; Suesdek,Lincoln.

Effect of ivermectin on the life cycle and larval fat body of Culex quinquefasciatus BABT
Alves,Stenio Nunes; Serrão,José Eduardo; Mocelin,Giovani; Melo,Alan Lane de.
The present work investigated the behavior, survival rate and lethal effect of 1.5 ppb ivermectin on Culex quinquefasciatus larvae, based on morphological and biological parameters, and possible alterations of their fat body. Changes in the number of eggs/egg mass and length of the larval stage were investigated. For this experiment, 600 larvae of 3rd and 4th instars of the mosquito were tested. The laid eggs were separated and the hatched larvae were counted. Some larvae submitted to 1.5 ppb ivermectin solution were used to prepare samples for histological study. Results obtained showed that ivermectin in a concentration of 1.5 ppb caused paralysis to the larvae with a mortality rate of 73.38%, mobilization of substances stored in the fat body and...

The polytene chromosomes of the mosquito Anopheles bellator compared with those of Anopheles cruzii Braz. J. Genet.
Ramirez,Corolla C.L.; Dessen,Eliana M.B..
A photographic map was made of polytene chromosomes of ovarian nurse cells of Anopheles bellator females. The chromosomes of this species have complete or partial homology with those of A. cruzii, mainly in the telomeric and centromeric regions. Variability at the single band level was observed as asymmetric bands at seven different positions. One inversion (3Ra) was detected in the 3R arm.
