Antagonistic interactions between benzo[a]pyrene and C60 in toxicological response of Marine Mussels ArchiMer
Barranger, Audrey; Langan, Laura M; Sharma, Vikram; Rance, Graham A; Aminot, Yann; Weston, Nicola J; Akcha, Farida; Moore, Michael N; Arlt, Volker M; Kholbystov, Andrei N; Readman, James W; Jha, Awadhesh N..
This study aimed to assess the ecotoxicological effects of the interaction of fullerene (C60) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) on the marine mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis. The uptake of nC60, B[a]P and mixtures of nC60 and B[a]P into tissues was confirmed by GC-MS, LC-HRMS and ICP-MS. Biomarkers of DNA damage as well as proteomics analysis were applied to unravel the toxic effect of B[a]P and C60. Antagonistic responses were observed at the genotoxic and proteomic level. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were only identified in the B[a]P single exposure and the B[a]P mixture exposure groups containing 1 mg/L of C60, the majority of which were down-regulated (~52%). No DEPs were identified at any of the concentrations of nC60 (p < 0.05, 1% FDR)....

Lallias, Delphine; Stockdale, Ruth; Boudry, Pierre; Lapegue, Sylvie; Beaumont, Andy R..
Mussels of the genus Mytilus are ecologically and commercially important worldwide, and they form hybrid complexes where their distributions overlap. Allozyme and nuclear markers have bee It Used to investigate their genetics over many years, but successful development of reliable highly valuable microsatellite markers has lagged be hind other shellfish species. We have developed and characterized tell novel microsatellite loci that amplify reliably for the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. The number of alleles among 30 individuals from a wild population (Menai Strait, North Wales UK) ranged between 9 and 29 and the observed heterozygosity between 0.300 and 0.954. Significant heterozygote deficiencies against the Hardy-Weinberg model were observed at 6 out of...

Recruitment of mussels in the Pertuis Breston (France) in these last years. A preliminary analysis on the influence of temperature and sunshine ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Dardignac, Marie-jose.
Since 1979, the IFREMER Laboratory follows mussel recruitement in the Pertuis Breton. Gametogenesis generally begins in September or October and ends in Décember. Spawning may begin in Februrary and continues up ta the end of April, but it usually occurs in the second fortnigh of March. The most important settlement generaly runs after the middle of May up to the middle of June. Duririg the study period, four years are noticeable by lack of settlement : 1982, 1989, 1990 and 1991. This failure thraughout these three last years resulted in a breakdown of the cultivated biomass. The present paper outlines a preliminary analysis on the influence of temperature and sunshine.

Lupo, Coralie; Prou, Jean.
Surveillance of shellf ish health is based on clinical surveillance of shellfish mortality, including a detection phase and a mandatory notification phase. While control measures are limited, early detection of pathogens is a challenge which needs to be met. The relevance and feasibility of an enhanced clinical surveillance based on phone interviews were studied. The results made it possible to reconstruct the spatial and temporal evolution of the outbreaks of mussel mortality which occurred in Pertuis Charentais in 2014. Moreover, a qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed contextual elements that were used to enhance the previous description and to devise causal scenarios which could be used as research hypotheses. By incorporating the...

Shell allometry and length-mass-density relationship for Mytilus edulis in an experimental food-regulated situation ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bourget, Edwin; Frechette, Marcel.
We examined the influence of food availability and population density on the morphometry and shell length body mass relationship of Mytilus edulis. Mussels were reared in the laboratory for 22 mo at 8 different density levels in 11 chambers supplied with natural seston at 2 different concentrations. This allowed us to assess separately the effects of food availability and mussel density. The shell length/width and shell height/width ratios were affected by food, density and time. Mussels tended to be narrower (flatter) at high density and at low food level. Therefore, narrow shells could result from reduced food concentration in high density situations without implying physical interference. Shell mass was also influenced by both food and density levels,...

Integration of shellfish farming activies in three French coastal environments : Mont Saint-Michel Bay, Gulf of Morbihan, and Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Le Mao, Patrick; Camus, Patrick; Bacher, Cedric; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Integration of shellfish farming along the French shoreline (around 5500 km) has been progressive, as marine bivalve culture is a traditional activity in our country. The history of mussel culture relates that the "bouchot" technique (intertidal culture on wooden poles, producing annually around 60,000 tons) was developed as early as the XIIIth century, by a refugee attempting to capture birds by sticking branches of brushwood along the shore. The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, already appreciated at the Roman period, was first cultivated in France after Victor Coste introduced the technique of spat collection at the end of the XIXth century. The Pacific cupped oyster, genus Crassostrea, now the most-cultivated in France (around 120,000 tons marketed...

The role of Azadinium spinosum (Dinophyceae) in the production of azaspiracid shellfish poisoning in mussels ArchiMer
Salas, Rafael; Tillmann, Urban; John, Uwe; Kilcoyne, Jane; Burson, Amanda; Cantwell, Caoimhe; Hess, Philipp; Jauffrais, Thierry; Silke, Joe.
Azaspiracids (AZAs) are a group of lipophilic polyether compounds first detected in Ireland which have been implicated in shellfish poisoning incidents around Europe. These toxins regularly effect shellfish mariculture operations including protracted closures of shellfish harvesting areas for human consumption. The armoured dinoflagellate Azadinium spinosum Elbrachter et Tillmann gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae) has been described as the de novo azaspiracid toxin producer; nonetheless the link between this organism and AZA toxin accumulation in shellfish has not yet been established. In August 2009, shellfish samples of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) from the Southwest of Ireland were analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and...

Genomic abnormalities affecting mussels (Mytilus edulis-galloprovincialis) in France are related to ongoing neoplastic processes, evidenced by dual flow cytometry and cell monolayer analyses ArchiMer
Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Saunier, Alice; Ledu, Christophe; Travers, Marie-agnes; Morga, Benjamin.
In the context of the abnormal mass mortality of mussels in France since 2014, Flow CytoMetry (FCM) was used in 2015 and 2016 to study the DNA content and cell cycle characteristics of hemic circulating cells collected from 2000 mussels. The mussels were sampled from 12 wild and cultivated blue mussels stocks distributed along the French Atlantic coast from the south Brittany to Pertuis Charentais areas. During these surveys, various genetic abnormalities were frequently detected, and ploidy characteristics revealed contrasting profiles that corresponded to respective contrasting sanitary status, i.e. healthy mussels with high cytogenetic quality (HCQ) versus diseased mussels with low cytogenetic quality (LCQ). In the present work, FCM and hemocytology...

Détermination de Valeurs Guides Environnementales (VGE) mollusques alternatives aux Normes de Qualité Environnementale (NQE) définies dans la DCE ArchiMer
Sire, Alizee; Amouroux, Isabelle.
The Water Framework Directive (DCE 2000/60/CE), aims to achieve the good conditions (chemical and ecological) of different waters in Europe. The Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) are the tools used to evaluate the chemical condition waters. Initially, the EQS are defined for the water matrix, but with the analytical difficulties and low spatial and temporal representativity of water samples, the monitoring of contaminants must be carried out on alternative matrices, as mollusks and particularly the mussels. Among the 45 priority and dangerous priority substances establishes by the WFD 2013/39/UE, 25 substances are hydrophobic and bioaccumulable. The main goal of this study is to determine thresholds applicable in the mussels at least as protective as...
