Can habitat specialisation maintain a mosaic hybrid zone in marine bivalves? ArchiMer
Bierne, Nicolas; David, Pierre; Langlade, Aime; Bonhomme, F.
Maintaining the integrity of differentiated genomes in marine organisms needs efficient isolation mechanisms, because planktonic larval dispersion provides contacts between taxa. Habitat specialisation is interesting in this respect, because it can both prevent interspecific crosses (each taxon reproduces in its own habitat) and eliminate hybrids (typically less fit than a parental taxon in each habitat). The contact zone between smooth-shelled mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis in Europe is a good example, as allozyme genotypes typical of both taxa seem to segregate into different habitats. However, allozymes may be selected directly and it is not known whether the same pattern can be extended to the whole genome. Here, we used 6 presumably...

First record of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia mytilovum in Mytilus sp (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) from France ArchiMer
Comtet, Thierry; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Steinhausia mytilovuln is a globally distributed microsporidian parasite which infects the oocytes of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Despite the intensive monitoring effort made on mussel populations, the parasite has not previously been reported in France. We report herein on the occurrence of S. mytilovum in Mytilus sp. from 1 cultured and 2 natural populations on the northern coast of France, thus extending the parasite's known distribution northwards. We also report on the observation in 1989 of S. mytilovum in M, galloprovincialis from the Golfe de Fos area in the Mediterranean Sea (South of France), S. mytilovum was observed in the European hybrid zone between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, which therefore renders the...

Viral depuration of Mytilus galloprovincialis in ozone treated water ArchiMer
Croci, L; Demedici, D; Franco, E; Gabrielli, R; Dipasquale, S; Toti, L.
The depuration effectiveness of Poliovirus 1 and HAV contamined mussels, when subjected to flowing ozonized water, was evaluated. Mussels were experimentally contamined and then depurated up to 72 hours using a pilot depuration system with ozone treated and untreated water. The results showed that viral infectivity titter decreased more rapidly in mussels subjected to ozonized water (from 10 super(4) TCID50 to 10 super(1.5) TCID50 per ml of Poliovirus 1 but in the following period it remained unchanged. Also HAV was detected in the mussels after 72 h of depuration.

Delta de l'Ebre is a natural bay model for Marteilia spp. (Paramyxea) dynamics and life-cycle studies ArchiMer
Carrasco, N; Arzul, Isabelle; Berthe, Franck; Fernandez Tejedor, M; Durfort, M; Furones, M.
Marteilia spp. are paramyxean parasites that affect several bivalve species of economic interest, such as Ostrea edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis. Certain aspects of Marteilia spp., such as their life cycle and host affinity and infection dynamics, still remain unknown. The 'Delta de l'Ebre' constitutes a natural model for the study of the life cycle of the parasite Marteilia, since uninfected mussels and flat oysters immersed in the bays can become infected. This, along with the geographical and ecological characteristics of the bays, make it a very interesting location to study the Marteilia life cycle. Preliminary results concerning marteiliosis, mainly in mussels, such as prevalence dynamics, infectious periods, host affinity and host intermediate...

β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) and isomers: Distribution in different food web compartments of Thau lagoon, French Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Reveillon, Damien; Abadie, Eric; Sechet, Veronique; Masseret, Estelle; Hess, Philipp; Amzil, Zouher.
The neurotoxin BMAA (β-N-methylamino-l-alanine) and its isomer DAB (2,4-diaminobutyric acid) have been detected in seafood worldwide, including in Thau lagoon (French Mediterranean Sea). A cluster of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease associated with BMAA, has also been observed in this region. Mussels, periphyton (i.e. biofilms attached to mussels) and plankton were sampled between July 2013 and October 2014, and analyzed using HILIC-MS/MS. BMAA, DAB and AEG (N-(2-aminoethyl)glycine) were found in almost all the samples of the lagoon. BMAA and DAB were present at 0.58 and 0.83, 2.6 and 3.3, 4.0 and 7.2 μg g−1 dry weight in plankton collected with nets, periphyton and mussels, respectively. Synechococcus sp., Ostreococcus...

Pichot, Yves.
The fact that molluscs from the Mediterranean have benefited from a privileged zoosanitary condition compared to those of the other French coasts has for a long time limited the control of farms and natural fields in this area. It is only in the early 70's, because of the pathological problems and risks observed in other areas that Mediterranean molluscs started to be stictly under zoosanitory control. This control was however limited until the early 90's. With the implementation of the European directives 91/67 and 95/70 for the protection of molluscs against diseases and their propagation, with the creation in 1992 of REPAMO- IFREMER (with a watch unit in the Mediterranean), the control of molluscs in the Mediterranean has considerably improved. New evidence for the involvement of Paracartia grani (Copepoda, Calanoida) in the life cycle of Marteilia refringens (Paramyxea) ArchiMer
Boyer, S.; Chollet, Bruno; Bonnet, D.; Arzul, Isabelle.
The dynamics of the protozoan parasite Marteilia refringens was studied in Thau lagoon, an important French shellfish site, for 1 year in three potential hosts: the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mytiliidae) the grooved carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus (Veneriidae) and the copepod Paracartia grani (Acartiidae). Parasite DNA was detected by PCR in R. decussatus. In situ hybridisation showed necrotic cells of M. refringens in the digestive epithelia of some R. decussatus suggesting the non-involvement of this species in the parasite life cycle. In contrast, the detection of M. refringens in mussels using PCR appeared bimodal with two peaks in spring and autumn. Histological observations of PCR-positive mussels revealed the presence of...

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Croissance des larves de Crassostrea gigas et de Mytilus galloprovincialis en présence d'algues monocellulaires isolées du tractus digestif des véligères du milieu naturel ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Robert, Rene.
The collection of Crassostrea gigas veligeres in their natural environment and the homogenate technique (HIS et al., 1985) enable the monospecific culture of nine algae which larvae feed on. Four of them could be mass-produced: Nannochloris atomus, Stichococcus bacillaris, Chlamidomonas bullosa and Tetraselmis Tetrathele. Their feeding quality has been tested using the cross-growth method, and using Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis veligeres. Although regularly found in the homogenates, and thus fed on by larvae, the first three algae gave poor results. Only Tetraselmis tetrathele has good nutritional qualities for Crassostrea gigas veligeres.

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M-galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Bierne, Nicolas; David, Pierre; Boudry, Pierre; Bonhomme, F.
Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model. these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore. strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known species complex, with hybridization over extensive areas such as the contact zone of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis around European Atlantic coasts. This paper...

Cinétique et production de deux moulières naturelles de l'Est algérois. Influence des facteurs thermiques et anthropiques ArchiMer
Abadaboudjema, Ym; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
A long-term survey of two mussel populations from two natural mussel beds, Bordj El Kiffan and Boudouaou, was carried out from the end of 1984 to the beginning of 1991. Samples had been also collected from 1978-1979 then from 1992-1993, but only from the first of these. Maximal densities were higher than 10,000 ind. m(-2), due to the spring and summer heavy spatfall. At Bordj El Kiffan, densities of M. galloprovincialis were 50 times more important than those of P. perna. At Boudouaou, the abundance of P. perna was 1.7 times higher than that of M. galloprovincialis. From 1986 to 1988, the mean annual biomass in dry weight of tissue including ash was higher for P. perna at Boudouaou (0.886 kg. m(-2)) than at Bordj El Kiffan (0.486 kg. m(-2)). For M....

The French mussel industry : present status and perspectives ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The French mussel industry produces around 60,000 metric tons on a yearly basis using two common species: Mytilus edulis, which is widely distributed along the Atlantic coastline, and Mytilus galloprovincialis, distributed mainly on Mediterranean shores. This production represents only half of the yearly consumption of mussels in France, leading to large imports from Spain and the Netherlands. Most imports occur between September and March, when the Atlantic production is reduced because of low meat quality due to spawning events. Although a public mussel fishery still exists, most production is based upon 3 culture techniques: on-bottom culture, longline and suspended culture, and bouchot-type culture, with the latter being developed in the l3lh century....

Mortality investigation of Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis in France: An experimental survey under laboratory conditions ArchiMer
Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Garcia, Celine; Ledu, Christophe; Lamy, Pierre; Maurouard, Elise; Degremont, Lionel.
In the context of mass mortality outbreaks affecting adult and juvenile mussels since 2014 in France, two investigations were conducted to study mussel mortality under laboratory conditions in 2015. The first investigated the horizontal transmission of a putative causal agent of the mortality among two stocks of wild Mytilus edulis and the potential genetic resistance of adults and their progenies. The second evaluated the resistance of pure and hybrid crosses of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis at the spat stage to a mortality outbreak. For the first time in France, we described several mortality outbreaks affecting spat and adult mussels under laboratory conditions. Mortality was observed for seawater temperatures ranging from 10 to 23 °C, although the...

Active biomonitoring in Greek coastal waters: Application of the integrated biomarker response index in relation to contaminant levels in caged mussels ArchiMer
Tsangaris, Catherine; Hatzianestis, Ioannis; Catsiki, Vassiliki-angelique; Kormas, Konstantinos Ar; Strogyloudi, Evangelia; Neofitou, Christos; Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois.
An integrated approach using biomarkers and contaminant levels in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L was employed to assess chemical contamination in Greek coastal waters within the framework of the MYTIMED program. Biomarkers (metallothioneins, glutathione S-transferase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase and RNA:DNA ratio) have been previously described in mussels caged at 14 sites in coastal areas influenced by different types of anthropogenic activities. This study applied a biomarker index, the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) to summarize biomarker responses and relate stress levels to concentrations of organochlorine compounds (PCBs, DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals (Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn) measured in the mussel tissues. The IBR...

Multixenobiotic resistance protein expression in Mytilus edulis, M-galloprovincialis and Crassostrea gigas from the French coasts ArchiMer
Minier, C; Moore, M; Galgani, Francois; Claisse, Didier.
Multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) is a membrane-transport mechanism that allows organisms to exclude many compounds from their cells and tissues. It is thus a first line of defence against a variety of toxic compounds. Since mussels and oysters possess MXR proteins, an analysis of the expression level of these membrane-transporters has been conducted in relation to their body burden of some major environmental contaminants. Mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis and the oyster Crassostrea gigas were sampled from a total of 43 sites along the French coasts. High expression levels were found in animals from the major French estuaries (Seine, Loire and Gironde), at a few sites in Brittany and in nearly all sites from the Mediterranean mainland coasts....
