Soil composition and nutritional status of apple as affected by long-term application of gypsum Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nava,Gilberto; Ernani,Paulo Roberto; Sá,Alessandra Aparecida de; Pereira,Adilson José.
Gypsum does not affect the soil negative charges and maintains sulfate in the soil solution, making it one of the cheapest products to increase Ca activity in soil solution, especially in the deeper soil layers. Higher Ca levels in the soil solution can increase the uptake of this nutrient by apple trees, reducing the risk of physiological disorders caused by Ca deficiency. This study assessed the effect of long-term gypsum application on some soil properties and on the chemical composition of leaves and fruits of an apple cultivar susceptible to fruit disorders associated with low Ca. The experiment was conducted in São Joaquim, in the South of Brazil, from 2001 to 2009. Gypsum rates of 0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 t ha-1 were annually broadcast over the soil...

Nitrate reductase activity and spad readings in leaf tissues of guinea grass submitted to nitrogen and potassium rates Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lavres Junior,José; Santos Junior,João de Deus Gomes dos; Monteiro,Francisco Antonio.
Nitrogen and K deficiency are among the most yield limiting factors in Brazilian pastures. The lack of these nutrients can hamper the chlorophyll biosynthesis and N content in plant tissues. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the relationship among N and K concentrations, the indirect determination of chlorophyll content (SPAD readings), nitrate reductase activity (RNO3-) in newly expanded leaf lamina (NL) and the dry matter yield for plant tops of Mombaça grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.). A fractionated 5² factorial design was used, with 13 combinations of N and K rates in the nutrient solution. The experimental units were arranged in a randomized block design, with four replications. Plants were harvested twice. The first harvest occurred...

Monitoring nitrogen nutrition in cotton Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rosolem,Ciro Antonio; van Mellis,Vanessa.
Both N excess and deficiency may affect cotton yield and quality. It would therefore be useful to base the N management fertilization on the monitoring of the nutritional status. This study investigated the correlations among the following determination methods of the N nutritional status of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., var. Latifolia): chlorophyll readings (SPAD-502®, Minolta), specific-ion nitrate meter (Nitrate Meter C-141, Horiba-Cardy®), and laboratory analysis (conventional foliar diagnosis). Samples were taken weekly from two weeks before flowering to the fifth week after the first flower. The experiment was conducted on the Fazenda Santa Tereza, Itapeva, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The crop was fertilized with 40 kg ha-1 N at planting and 0, 30,...

THE ROLE OF MINERAL NUTRITION ON YIELDS AND FRUIT QUALITY IN GRAPEVINE, PEAR AND APPLE Rev. Bras. Frutic.
BRUNETTO,GUSTAVO; MELO,GEORGE WELLINGTON BASTOS DE; TOSELLI,MORENO; QUARTIERI,MAURIZIO; TAGLIAVINI,MASSIMO.
ABSTRACT Fertilization of temperate fruit trees, such as grapevine ( Vitis spp.), apple ( Malus domestica), and pear ( Pyrus communis) is an important tool to achive maximum yield and fruit quality. Fertilizers are provided when soil fertility does not allow trees to express their genetic potential, and time and rate of application should be scheduled to promote fruit quality. Grapevine berries, must and wine quality are affected principally by N, that regulate the synthesis of some important compounds, such as anthocyanins, which are responsible for coloring of the must and the wine. Fermenation of the must may stop in grapes with low concentration of N because N is requested in high amount by yeasts. An N excess may increase the pulp to peel ratio,...

Impact of Nitrate and Ammonium ratio on Nutrition and Growth of two Epiphytic Orchids Anais da ABC (AABC)
MANTOVANI,CIBELE; PRADO,RENATO M.; PIVETTA,KATHIA F.L..
Abstract Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium do not grow and flower well with 100% ammonium (NH4-N); and there are detailed studies on the effects of nitrate (NO3-N) and ammonium ratios on the flowering, but no information about accumulation of other nutrients and the effects of ammonium toxicity on orchids. For this reason, two experiments were carried out with orchids: Phalaenopsis ‘Golden Peoker’ and Dendrobium ‘Valentine’. Six months after acclimatization the plants were transplanted to individual plastic vessels and the treatments consisted of five ratios (%) of nitrate / ammonium (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, 100/0). The sources of NO3-N and NH4-N were calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, respectively. After 12 months treatment, when the plants were...

Copper supply and fruit yield of young Citrus trees: fertiliser sources and application methods Bragantia
Hippler,Franz Walter Rieger; Boaretto,Rodrigo Marcelli; Teixeira,Luiz Antonio Junqueira; Quaggio,José Antonio; Mattos-Jr,Dirceu de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the fertiliser sources and application methods of copper (Cu) in citrus trees during the first years of fruit production. Two experiments were set up in an orchard with 3-year-old sweet orange trees, which were applied with three sources of Cu (nitrate, sulfate or EDTA) either via fertigation (Experiment 1) or via foliar sprays (Experiment 2). Regardless of the fertiliser source, Cu application via fertigation was not efficacious to increase the micronutrient concentration in leaves and, consequently, did not affect fruit yield. Conversely, foliar application of Cu, either as nitrate or sulfate, increased this nutrient level in leaves but when applied as copper nitrate, visual phytotoxicity symptoms were verified in...
