Origin of organic compounds in fluids from ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Konn, Cécile.
Natural gas, primarily methane (CH4), is produced in substantial amounts in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. These systems could also generate oil (heavier hydrocarbons) and the first building blocks of life (prebiotic molecules). In the presence of iron bearing minerals, serpentinisation reactions generate H2. Subsequently, CH4 could be synthesised by Fischer-Tropsch Type (FTT) reaction (4H2 + CO2 -> CH4 + 2H2O) which is an abiotic process. This has lead to the idea of abiotic formation of larger organic molecules. Both thermodynamics and laboratory work support this idea, yet field data have been lacking. This study focuses on determining the organic content of fluids from ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)...

Las esponjas marinas como fuente de nuevas sustancias bioactivas. OceanDocs
Regalado, E.L.; Laguna, A.; Martínez, J.R..
Marine sponges (Porifera) have drawn the attention from a broad number of researchers all over the world. These animals and their simbionts are specialized in chemical warfare, producing biologically active chemical substances as an effective defense against predators. They have been considered a goldmine to chemists, from which have been discovered more than 6000 novel structures; many of them, with enormous biomedical applications, mainly against cancer, but also against bacteria, viruses and other diseases. Some of the sponge-derived drugs are available in the market, such as: Ara-A (antiviral) and Ara-C (anticancer), but there are diverse bioactive compounds under clinical trials. In Cuba, the researches related to the isolation of compounds from...

Morphophysiological responses of Ilex paraguariensis seedlings to different substrates and fertilizations AGRIAMBI
Zavistanovicz,Thairini C.; Araujo,Maristela M.; Aimi,Suelen C.; Flores,Rejane; Berghetti,Álvaro L. P.; Deponti,Gilmar.
ABSTRACT The increasing demand for Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill (yerba mate) by-products generated the need for producing a greater quantity of seedlings and improve their quality. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of different substrates combined with base fertilization for Ilex paraguariensis seedlings, through morphophysiological parameters. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 5 x 3 factorial arrangement, and the treatments consisted of five substrate formulations combined with two fertilizers, and a control without fertilization, in November 2013. The I. paraguariensis seedlings produced in the substrate consisted of subsurface soil, cattle manure and charred rice hulls (2:2:1) presented...

Characterisation of solvent extractable organic constituents in atmospheric particulate matter: an overview Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alves,Célia A..
In spite of accounting for 10-70% of the atmospheric aerosol mass, particulate-phase organic compounds are not well characterised, and many aspects of aerosol formation and evolution are still unknown. The growing awareness of the impact of particulate aerosols on climate, and the incompletely recognised but serious effects of anthropogenic constituents on air quality and human health, have conducted to several scientific studies. These investigations have provided information about the behaviour of atmospheric particulate matter and the description of the character of its carbonaceous content. The compilation of such results is important as they append to the emergent global-wide dataset of the organic composition of atmospheric aerosols. The contribution...

Metabolite profiling of Schizochytrium sp. by GC-MS, an oleaginous microbial source of biodiesel BJM
Mioso,Roberto; Marante,Francisco J. Toledo; González,Juan E.G.; Rodríguez,Juan J. S.; Laguna,Irma Herrera Bravo de.
The chemical screening carried out on Schizochytrium sp. biomass led the identification of 24 types of organic compounds belonging to n-alkanes, 1-alkenes, 1-alkanols, free fatty acids, methyl and ethyl esters of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, saturated tri- and diglycerides, unsaturated monoglycerides, wax esters, sterols, triterpenes, and mono- and sesquiterpenes. Moreover, a sample containing fully saturated ethyl biodiesel was obtained experimentally with a yield of 28.72% w/w of the crude extract, and an average chain length of 15.52 carbons. This strain produced no toxins, but showed important nutrients, making it potentially applicable to the field of functional food, and biodiesel production.
