Marine sponges (Porifera) have drawn the attention from a broad number of researchers all over the world. These animals and their simbionts are specialized in chemical warfare, producing biologically active chemical substances as an effective defense against predators. They have been considered a goldmine to chemists, from which have been discovered more than 6000 novel structures; many of them, with enormous biomedical applications, mainly against cancer, but also against bacteria, viruses and other diseases. Some of the sponge-derived drugs are available in the market, such as: Ara-A (antiviral) and Ara-C (anticancer), but there are diverse bioactive compounds under clinical trials. In Cuba, the researches related to the isolation of compounds from... |

ABSTRACT The increasing demand for Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill (yerba mate) by-products generated the need for producing a greater quantity of seedlings and improve their quality. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of different substrates combined with base fertilization for Ilex paraguariensis seedlings, through morphophysiological parameters. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 5 x 3 factorial arrangement, and the treatments consisted of five substrate formulations combined with two fertilizers, and a control without fertilization, in November 2013. The I. paraguariensis seedlings produced in the substrate consisted of subsurface soil, cattle manure and charred rice hulls (2:2:1) presented... |

The chemical screening carried out on Schizochytrium sp. biomass led the identification of 24 types of organic compounds belonging to n-alkanes, 1-alkenes, 1-alkanols, free fatty acids, methyl and ethyl esters of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, saturated tri- and diglycerides, unsaturated monoglycerides, wax esters, sterols, triterpenes, and mono- and sesquiterpenes. Moreover, a sample containing fully saturated ethyl biodiesel was obtained experimentally with a yield of 28.72% w/w of the crude extract, and an average chain length of 15.52 carbons. This strain produced no toxins, but showed important nutrients, making it potentially applicable to the field of functional food, and biodiesel production. |
