Digestive glands of Ostrea edulis affected by an epizootic have been examined by light- and electron- microscopy. Round, compact lesions in the digestive gland cells contain refractive elements staining slightly blue or red with Geimsa. Ultra-structurally, each lesion contains (a) dense cytoplasma, without mitochondria and with paracrystal-line inclusions, (b) enclosed regions with vacuolar cytoplasm, no mitochondria and two types of formation; one is opaque, the other a vacuole containing ribosomes, lamellar structures and peripheral ovoid particles. The nature and significance of these structures is not known. |

Abnormal mortalities of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, have been monitored in June 1979 in some farms of l'Ile Tudy. The examination of these oysters with light and electron microscopy showed different forms of an intracellular parasite localized in the connective tissue of the gills and the digestive gland. It is also detectable in the blood vessels and the stomachal epithelium. Numerous parasited oysters showed distinctive branchial damages (perforations, indentations) visible through macroscopic examination. The epidemiological monitoring carried out on the Norman and Breton coast revealed the presence of this parasite in a large number of flat oyster farms. The percentage of parasited oysters is higher in areas where mortalities have been monitored but... |

A monitoring of the natural and high density populations of commercial molluscs is performed on an annual basis within the scope of the Repamo mollusc pathology monitoring network The aim of this surveillance is (1) to monitor the health status of the molluscs along the French coast and to produce a reference picture, and (2) to study the evolution of the noticeable pathogenic agents existing on the national territory. Different sampling strategies have been introduced for the past 15 years; each strategy is based on an active monitoring including the systematic study of natural mollusc deposits. Indeed, the natural and high density mollusc populations are interrelated and pathogenic agents can be and have been exchanged between these populations with... |

This fifth part of the polyploidisation program reports the experiments that were conducted in 1993 and that were devoted to : - monitoring growth performance of Ostrea edulis diploids and triploids in La Trinité sur Mer and Palavas - monitoring growth performance of Crassostrea gigas diploids and triploids in Port en Bessin, Marennes Oleron (2 locations), Arcachon and Palavas - comparative study of gametogenesis for C. gigas diploids and triploids - comparative study of C. gigas diploids and triploids using sensorial analysis At the end of fifth year, it was clear that triploids are advantageous although such a statement must be moderated according to locations. The gametogenesis stydy showed that triploidy is associated with partial to complete... |

Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in its aquaculture production. Selective breeding programs for resistance to bonamiosis have been undertaken to counter this disease. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters injected with the parasite to two tested families of oysters (20 and 8-month old at the beginning of the experiment, with different genetic backgrounds) originating from a selective breeding program developed by IFREMER in France. Mortalities were checked daily and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the... |

A study of the growth and mortality of the European oyster Ostrea edulis , including the effects of Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae , was carried out in three oceanic areas in the Bay of Arcachon from May 1989 to February 1991. One-year-old spat, free from disease were used for the trials. Six months after beginning the trials, Marteilia refringens had severely infested the cultures. Although Bonamia ostreae was found during the first year, the rate of infestation was low. In the second year bonamiasis increased and high mortality (> 60%) occurred in Ostrea edulis populations. Although the growth of the oysters was good, their condition index was generally poor. Moreover, shell perforations by Polydora sp. were observed. The influence of... |

In 1989, a selected strain of flat oyster. Ostrea edulis, was produced from breeders that survived Bonamia ostreae and that were over selected by injection of purified parasites. This generation (G 1) was compared to native oysters which had settled during the same year. After a growing period of 21 months, the oysters were tested according to three procedures: exposure to natural infection in an intertidal area, maintenance at the laboratory in tanks near heavily infested oysters, injection of parasites. The test lasted 7 months. In each procedure, oysters of the first generation (G1) showed a better survival rate than control oysters (72 to 94% versus 48 to 66%). On the other hand, the highest mortalities were observed among injected oysters (G1 and... |

The two common oyster species cultivated in Europe are the flat oyster Ostrea edulis and the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. These species have two really different reproduction strategies (oviparity versus larviparity) and histories (natural distribution versus introductions linked to oyster culture). We used microsatellite markers to compare the observed variabilities Europe wide. O. edulis presents a lower rate of alleles per locus than C. gigas. The observed structuration levels (global Fst and by pairs values) are similar for both species, but the spatial organisation of the diversity is different. In O. edulis, appears a differentiation based on the distance (concordance of the results with those obtained with the allozymes) whereas in C. gigas,... |
