The international symposium "Tuna Fishing and Fish Aggregating Devices " , October 1999, in Martinique, takes stock of the exploitation of large pelagic fish around FADs, based on regional synthesis for the three oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Main themes include technology, fishing methods, impact on resources, biology of fish aggregation, anthropology and economic aspects of FAD exploitation. The meeting will gather and disseminate results from recent and ongoing studies on FADs in the different oceans of the world, enhance collaboration between scientists and managers involved in the development of FADs, promote the emergence of scientific and technical research, form a network for cooperation and enhance communications between researchers in the... |

This version of the Manual of French Maritime Fishing was published in 1935 by the Office of Maritime Fishing. The authors attempted to explain the technical situation of that time of the industry to which their studies were dedicated. Here is a summary of the first part: - Introduction to the history of maritime fishing in France - Fishing in prehistoric times and in antiquity - Herring in the Middle Ages - Other fishing in the Middle Ages - Whaling and fishing other cetaceans - Deep-sea fishing: of cod fish in Newfoundland and on the Grand Banks - Fishing on the Newfoundland coast - The green fishery on the Grand Banks - Mussel fishing in Iceland and in the North Sea - Arrival of the steam trawler The evolution of French fishing. Conclusion - The... |

The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika... |

Beyond the technical and technological advances in the conversion of marine by-products into useful products, the territorial, economic, social, political and environmental parameters, which govern all forms of approaches for fish by-products upgrading, must be taken in account. This is essential to understand why and how bioconversion technologies are applicable. The fishery sector is facing several issues such as fish stocks weakening, recourse to imports, aquaculture rising or consumers behaviors which complicate the approach of fish by-products upgrading as it is linked to the raw material processing. Thanks to some projects addressed this thematic in recent years, several quantitative and qualitative data about by-products deposits are available.... |

The exploited stocks of wild bivalves (common cockles, dog cockles, clams, and spisules) in the Norman-Breton gulf vary according to the fishing activity and the environmental conditions. Different studies, carried out by the Ifremer in this region (between 1982 and 1998), enabled the evaluation of the stocks available for fishing as well as the collection of data on these species (demographic structure, growth...). For more information on the 1993-1994 studies and a presentation of the site and the fishery please refer to the reports by Berthou, 1987 and Noël et al, 1995. The bivalve expedition conducted in May 2002, enabled us to update the data on the populations of dog cockles and banded carpet shells, then of spisules and clams, using the same... |

This document, which is the eighth edition of a series started in 2000, provides a global overview of the data collected in 2011 as part of the Fisheries Observatory of Ifremer. It aims to present a summary of the activity and economic situation of the French fleets operating in the North Sea, English Channel, Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in 2010. It updates the 2009 issue, which was published in 2011. This synthesis is intended for a wide audience. The document contains several fact sheets: • The first sheet provides a description of the French national fishing fleet (North Sea - Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, excluding overseas), including vessel and crew characteristics. It also presents the evolution of the French fishing fleet... |
