Arocha,Y; Almeida,R; Jones,P.

Leaf area estimation is an important feature in physiological research involving predominantly photosynthesis, transpiration and growth. This study was carried out to develop a practical and nondestructive empirical mathematical model to estimate the area of one leaf and the total leaf area for papaya trees (Carica papaya L.). Two irrigated commercial orchards were evaluated over a period of 50 to 550 days after transplanting, during which the length of the leaf midrib (LM) varied from 0.04 to 0.60 m. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the area of one leaf for the papaya tree, taking into account LM and the age of the plant measured in days after transplanting. The model was considered satisfactory. Based on the average length of the last two...

Growth and yield of papaya under irrigation Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Frederico Terra de; Bernardo,Salassier; Sousa,Elias Fernandes de; Marin,Sérgio Lúcio David; Grippa,Sidney.
Thermal units or degree day systems can both be used to quantify relationships between plants and air temperature. The Northern Fluminense region holds no tradition for irrigated papaya (Carica papaya L.) cropping and, because of the need for irrigation, it is important knowing its growth and development characteristics under these conditions. This study aimed to determine the relationship between growth rate of papaya plants and degree days, and its effect on crop productivity, under different irrigation levels. An experiment was set up with the cultivar "Improved Sunrise Soil 72/12", in a randomized blocks design, with seven irrigation water depths and three repetitions; crop growth and yield parameters were evaluated. There were significant correlations...

Somkuan Boonsoda; Sureeporn Bunsiri; Suriyan Supapvanich; Surassawadee Promyou.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of CPPU on postharvest quality of ‘Kaek Dum’ papaya fruit. Fruits at the half-ripe stage were selected to test a dipped treatment with 0, 2 and 4 mg/l CPPU for 60 min. Then, all the samples were stored at 12°C (80-85% RH) for 15 days. The results showed that the fruit dipped in 4 mg/L CPPU had lowest firmness and the peel and pulp color development occurred rapidly than those in the other treatments. No differences in weight loss and membrane degradation when indicated by electrolyte leakage were found between treatments. The results indicated that such a CPPU treatment in papaya fruit may be accelerated fruit ripening.

Anatomy of somatic embryogenesis in Carica papaya L. BABT
Fernando,Juliana A.; Melo,Murilo; Soares,Marli K. M.; Appezzato-da-Glória,Beatriz.
Mature zygotic embryos of Carica papaya L. ‘Sunrise Solo’ were used as explants for embryogenesis induction. The explants were inoculated on Murashige and Skoog culture medium supplemented with 2 mg.L-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and incubated in darkness at 25+2°C. Histological analysis of callogenesis and somatic embryogenesis indicated occurrence of direct and indirect somatic embryogenesis development. Direct somatic embryo formation was observed from hypocotyledonary epidermic cells only from explant 18 days after inoculation. Somatic embryos formed indirectly were originated from embryogenic superficial cells of pre-embryonic complexes located on peripherical and on internal cell layers of callus 49 days after inoculation. Diverse morphological...

Control of papaya fruits anthracnose by essential oil of Ricinus communis BABT
Siqueira Júnior,César Luis; Freire,Maria das Graças Machado; Moreira,Antônio Sérgio Nascimento; Macedo,Maria Ligia Rodrigues.
The aim of this work was to investigate the potential of castor oil for the control of papaya diseases caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the bacterium Pseudomonas caricapapayae. The treatment with 1% castor oil did not significantly affect the fungal growth. The effectiveness of castor oil for the control of anthracnose was shown when 5% and 10% (v/v) were used in the assays resulting in reduced mycelial growth. Fungal sporulation was strongly inhibited at 10% (v/v) concentration of essential oil. The studies with the fresh fruits treated with 5% (v/v) castor oil in aqueous emulsions resulted in effective reduction of pathogen spread in these fruits. No lesion was found in the fruits treated with oil, when compared to the control...
