ABSTRACT The sugarcane green harvest system, characterized by mechanized harvesting and the absence of crop burning, affects soil quality by increasing crop residue on the soil surface after harvest; thus, it contributes to improving the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties and influences the soil carbon content and CO2 flux (FCO2). This study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of soil FCO2 in sugarcane green harvest systems. The experiment was conducted in two areas of sugarcane in São Paulo, Brazil: the first had a 5-year history of sugarcane green harvest (SG-5) and the second had a longer history of 10 years (SG-10). The temporal FCO2 were evaluated in the dry and rainy periods, and spatial variability in the dry... |

ABSTRACT The determination of physical properties is an important factor in the design of machinery and the scaling of post-harvest operations. The present study evaluates the influence of the level of roasting and the size of grinding on the physical properties of coffee during storage. The following physical properties were evaluated: true and bulk density, and intergranular porosity. Raw coffee beans (Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica), hulled and dried, were roasted to two different levels: medium light (SCAA#65) and moderately dark (SCAA#45). The beans were then grinded into three different sizes: fine (0.59 mm), medium (0.84 mm) and coarse (1.19 mm). An additional coffee lot was kept whole. Following grinding, samples were stored at two different... |

As dimensões características... |

Selected engineering properties (physical and mechanical) of dry bean under non-irrigation and drip-irrigation were determined and compared. These properties are necessary for the design of equipments for harvesting, processing, transporting, estimating loads in storage structures for crops and flow problems in silos such as arching, ratholing, irregular flow and segregation. Some engineering characteristics such as: average length, width, thickness, the geometric mean diameter, sphericity, surface area, volume, thousand grain mass (M1000), bulk and true densities, porosity, angle of internal friction, static coefficient of friction, Poisson ratio and pressure ratio were studied. The highest average values for physical properties were recorded at... |

Physical properties of Black gram are important during harvesting, cleaning and drying with machines and also during improvement of these machines. This study was conducted to evaluate some moisture-dependent physical properties of Black gram namely, grain dimensions, thousand grain mass, surface area, sphericity, bulk density, true density, porosity and angle of repose. As the moisture content increased from 8.696% to 21.951% d.b., the three axial dimensions of the Black gram increased and the arithmetic and geometric mean diameter ranged from 3.736 ± 0.14 to 4.276 ± 0.14 mm and 3.797 ± 0.13 to 4.322 ± 0.13 mm respectively. The hundred grain mass of Black gram were 42.52 ± 1.03 and 48.18 ± 0.45 kg. The sphericity values of Black gram increased from 79.69%... |

Knowing the physical and mechanical properties is very important for automating the activities associated with the date pit. The objective of this study was to determine physical and mechanical properties of date pit of Mazafati cultivar as a function of moisture content. The physical properties of the pits were determined in the moisture content range of 7% to 40% (wb). The date pits was compressed along the width at 0.08, 0.46, 0.55 and 0.64 (db) moisture contents to determine required force, deformation, and energy per volume (toughness) at rupture point. The results showed that the greatest length, width, thickness were 24.43, 9.21, 7.15 mm, respectively at moisture content of 40 % (wb). With increase moisture from 7% to 40% (wb) the true density of... |
