This study focuses on the impacts of El Nino induced abnormal weather on agricultural productivity in rainfed areas and on the coping mechanisms and risk management strategies from the national down to the household level. This study was conducted to: a) Determine the impacts of El Nino-related abnormal weather changes on production of selected crops; b) Document and analyze the existing conditions on rainfed farming systems, resources, infrastructure, institutions, and other socio-economic characteristics associated with El Nino vulnerable areas; c) Review existing policies related to El Nino; d) Draw up recommendations for the stabilization of rainfed agricultural production. The major sources of data were reports of studies related to El Nino, on-farm... |

Due to the rapid expansion of the poultry industry not only in Sri Lanka but also in other countries, the demand for feed crops has increased substantially. The CGPRT Centre initiated a study to analyze the situation in South Asia under a project called "Prospects of Feed Crops in South Asia (FEED)". The study was initiated to understand the demand-supply gap, weaknesses, opportunities, constraints and policy options to bridge the gap of feed crops in Sri Lanka. For this study, the data was collected from the Department of Animal Production and Health (AP & H), the Department of Census & Statistics and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Additional data was collected from other sources such as the Department of National Planning, Sri Lanka Customs and... |

The study was initiated to understand the demand-supply gap of various feed crops and identify measures to bridge it. Several models were introduced and discussed in a meeting held in Bogor (Indonesia) in September 2001 for determining the demand and supply of different feed crops. These are presented in this study. For this study, data was collected from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Data was also collected from other sources to understand the behaviour of exports and also the uses of animal feeds. Information from the Director and scientists at the National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research, New Delhi and Agricultural... |

The aim of this study was to calibrate the CENTURY, APSIM and NDICEA simulation models for estimating decomposition and N mineralization rates of plant organic materials (Arachis pintoi, Calopogonium mucunoides, Stizolobium aterrimum, Stylosanthes guyanensis) for 360 days in the Atlantic rainforest bioma of Brazil. The models´ default settings overestimated the decomposition and N-mineralization of plant residues, underlining the fact that the models must be calibrated for use under tropical conditions. For example, the APSIM model simulated the decomposition of the Stizolobium aterrimum and Calopogonium mucunoides residues with an error rate of 37.62 and 48.23 %, respectively, by comparison with the observed data, and was the least accurate model in the... |

Abstract The peach tree is a temperate fruit tree propagated by grafting with the scion cultivar and the rootstock from seeds, generating low uniformity, a viable alternative is propagation by herbaceous cuttings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of different genotypes of peach rootstock propagated by herbaceous cuttings. The experiment was carried out with standardized cuttings of 15 cm in length treated with 3,000 mg L-1 of IBA solution, then were transplanted into 3 L polyethylene bags. A completely randomized design with five replications was adopted, each plot consisting of three plants. Sixteen peach genotypes from UFV breeding program were tested: 713-3, 713-6, 713-7, 713-10, 813-2, 813-3, 813-5, 813-15, 913-3, 913-6,... |

Biochar can improve soil structure and water retention, enhance nutrient availability and retention, ameliorate acidity, and reduce heavy metal toxicity to plant roots. In this study, a basin experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of quail litter biochar (QLB) on the availability of Cd to physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) plants. QLB was applied to the soil in which four new physic nut varieties (Takfa, Doi Saket, Lao, and Rayong) in factorial combinations at four levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 g kg-1 soil) to soil that contained 60.8 mg Cd kg-1. After transplanting plant height and canopy radius were measured every 2-mo and the number of leaves and branches at 6-mo, while yield components and Cd residues were measured at 8-mo intervals. The... |
