Heterogeneous Production Efficiency of Specialized Swine Producers AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Featherstone, Allen M..
This research evaluates the efficiency of swine firms differing by specialization type and employed technologies. Measures of technical, allocative, scale, economic, and overall efficiency are separately and jointly estimated for farrow-to-finish, farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, farrow-to-weanling, weanling-to-feeder, and mixed operations. Findings confirm appreciable differences in efficiency and causes of efficiency. Results suggest that overall efficiency of farrow-to-finish and farrow-to-weanling operations is on average lower than farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, and weanling-to-feeder operations. In addition, Tobit models examining how demographic factors, farm type, and input expenses influence efficiency indicate additional variation across...

FARMER EDUCATION AND ADOPTION OF SLASH AND BURN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Schuck, Eric C.; Nganje, William E.; Yantio, Debazou; Aquach, Emmanuel.
Education can play a critical role in moving farmers in developing countries away from environmentally harmful slash and burn agriculture. The present research examines the extent to which extension education can promote adoption of cropping systems other than slash and burn. Choice of cropping system by farmers in Cameroon, whether slash and burn, multiple crops, or mono-cropping, is modeled as a function of farm size, farmer educational level, and visits by extension personnel. Results indicate that higher visitation rates by extension personnel reduce not only the likelihood of farmers choosing slash and burn agriculture, but also promotes movement into mono-cropping. Since mono-cropping represents a move toward export-oriented agriculture in...

A Comparative Marketing Analysis of Major Agricultural Products in the United States and Argentina AgEcon
Lence, Sergio H..
Interest is high in Argentina as an emerging economic power in the Americas. This paper analyzes issues pertinent to the relative advantages and disadvantages between the United States and Argentina for producing, transporting, processing, and marketing major agricultural commodities in the context of distribution to significant global markets. Designed as a tool for agribusiness students and prospective investment and trade partners, it provides a side-by-side analysis of major U.S. and Argentine agricultural commodities. All facts and figures are in U.S. currency and common U.S. (avoirdupois) weights and measures. Also from a comparative perspective, it defines the differences in technologies between the countries and examines in detail the marketing...

Empirical Analysis of Potential Oligopsony Power and Production Technology in the Ukrainian Milk Processing Industry under Conditions of Economic Transition AgEcon
Perekhozhuk, Oleksandr; Grings, Michael; Glauben, Thomas.
The objective of this study is to provide an empirical analysis of potential market power of the Ukrainian milk processing industry in the market for raw milk. The article is based on the New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) approach and pays special attention to the production technology of the sector. In NEIO studies of market power in the food processing industry the production technology is typically assumed to be of a neoclassical type with simple properties like, e.g., constant returns to scale. Properties of this kind, however, are likely not to prevail in most transition countries of Eastern Europe because of serious distortions in factor usage mainly due to institutional deficiencies. Therefore, the analysis of this study is based on the...

Energy flow in castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) production systems Scientia Agricola
Silva,Adilson Nunes da; Romanelli,Thiago Libório; Reichardt,Klaus.
Although energy analysis is a way to evaluate the sustainability of production systems, this practice is not often used in the agribusiness. In this context, the castor bean (Ricinus communis L) is an agricultural crop not yet well studied despite its great potential in the Brazilian energetic scenario. This article aimed to evaluate the productive potential of the castor bean oil, using an energetic view applied to two management systems: low (System 1) and medium (System 2) technologies. The quantification of the used material fluxes was made converting these factors in energy units. The input energy fluxes were 3,170.6 MJ ha¹ and 10,366.0 MJ ha¹ for Systems 1 and 2, respectively. The energy balance of System 1 was 11,938.2 MJ ha¹ and that of System 2...

Luempua is a dark-purple glutinous upland rice belongs to the Mong hilltribe. The origin prior to the time of seed purification was the mountainous area 450 m above sea level. The variety is normally grown in the wet season under upland condition. To obtain the information for appropriate time of sowing and growing with water as for the lowland sowing, Luempua was sown by transplanting in the cement container every 15 days from 2010-2013 at Phitsanulok Rice Research center (PSL). Results revealed that the most appropriate time of sowing is from mid to the end of May and the lowland areas especially those prone to Brown planthopper infestation are not recommended. Seed conservation was carried out at 3 sites i.e. upland farmer’s field, amphoe Khao Kor,...

Zoning of rice production potential in Thai rice area has been conducted from 2000 to 2013. The objectives of the project were 1) to define the potential of rice area in Thailand in term of soil suitability and productivity, 2) to create map of rice production zoning with appropriate recommendation. Methodology to run the project consisted of secondary data collection, field survey, crop cutting, field experiment, and mapping. The research found that total of 12.6 M ha of rice areas in Thailand it was suitable for rice production about 8.2 M ha. Rice soil was more fertile in the central plain as compared to other region. Most of the farmer grew recommended rice varieties. There were three major groups of growing rice variety, jasmine rice, white rice, and...
