Mechanized methods for harvesting residual biomass from Mediterranean fruit tree cultivations Scientia Agricola
Velázquez-Martí,Borja; Fernández-González,Elena; Callejón-Ferre,Ángel Jesús; Estornell-Cremades,Javier.
This study evaluates the technology and work systems used in order to harvest residual biomass from pruning in the specific conditions of Mediterranean fruit orchards (narrow distances between crop-rows). Harvesting has been divided into several types of operations - pruning, biomass alignment between crop tracks, biomass concentration in piles, chipping and bundling - which have been analyzed in five Mediterranean cultivations for three years. Altogether, three types of pruning have been analyzed: Manual, previous mechanical followed by manual, and fully mechanical; Two types of alignment: Manual and mechanical; Three concentration systems: Manual, tractor with a rake and a forwarder; Four chipping work organization systems: chipper driven inside orchard...

Bud load management on table grape yield and quality – cv. Sugrathirteen (Midnight Beauty®) Bragantia
Feitosa,Carlos Augusto Menezes; Mesquita,Alessandro Carlos; Pavesi,Andrea; Ferreira,Kalline Mendes; Feitosa,Carlos Victor Menezes.
ABSTRACT Viticulture is an activity of great economic and social importance in the Submedium region of the São Francisco River Valley, with emphasis on table grape and wine production. With the increasing expansion of the viticulture, a growing number of alternatives that do not affect fruit quality have been studied to maximize table grape yield, such as pruning and load adjustment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different bud loads on canopy management to enable the marketable and economic production of cv. Sugrathirteen (Midnight Beauty®) in the submedium region ofthe São Francisco River Valley. This study was carried out for two years (2014/2015) in an experimental area for the introduction of new cultivars patented by...

Influence of coffee pruning on the severity of frost damage BABT
Androcioli Filho,Armando; Caramori,Paulo Henrique.
Frost damages in a field experiment of pruning types and systems for the cultivars of Coffea arabica Catuaí and Mundo Novo, were evaluated at Londrina (23º22’S, 52º10´W), State of Parana, southern Brazil, during the winter of 1990 and 1994. Pruning types evaluated were ‘esqueletamento’ (cutting off all plagiotropic branches at 20-30 cm from the orthotropic branch), ‘decote’ (cutting off the orthotropic branch at 1.5 m and 2.0 m above ground) and ‘recepa’ (cutting off the orthotropic branch at 0.8 m above ground), performed on all rows and on alternate rows, and on different sections of the plant. Results indicated that frost damage could increase according to the type and height of pruning. The pruning type ‘esqueletamento’ and prunings at higher levels...

Vine balance: a study case in Carménère grapevines Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fredes,Claudio; Moreno,Yerko; Ortega,Samuel; Von Bennewitz,Eduardo.
Vitis vinifera cv. Carménère is a vigorous variety of grapevine that requires high temperatures and luminosity for achieving optimal phenolic maturity and herbal aromas, which has been reported to signifcantly delay harvest in Chile. This research was developed under the hypothesis that canopy management, vigor and crop load could modify the productive and vegetative relationships for obtaining early or late ripening and achieving vine balance. The aim of this study was to determine the vine balance and the time of ripeness for Carménère grapevines. Different vigor and canopy managements were evaluated. The study was conducted in the Central Valley of Chile during the 2007 to 2008 season with own-rooted Carménère vines trained to a four-cane vertical shoot...

Pruning effects on vegetative growth and fruit quality of 'Bing'/'Gisela®5' and 'Bing'/'Gisela®6' sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Villasante,Macarena; Godoy,Soledad; Zoffoli,Juan Pablo; Ayala,Marlene.
Annual pruning is one of the most efficient ways to regulate crop load and renew fruiting wood in highly productive sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) combinations. Although Chilean growers did not previously prune cherry trees of more vigorous combinations, in recent years, the adoption of more dwarfing rootstocks and self-fertile cultivars has led to the inclusion of annual pruning as a practice in modern orchards. At first, this alteration in orchard management practices was not considered by growers, and thus, many of the initially established cherry orchards were not pruned as intensively as they should have been. As a consequence, many trees showed a reduction in fruit quality after 4 or 5 years of being planted, as they became overcropped and,...
