Stress in pregnant rats alters the pattern of secretion of corticosterone (COR) and modifies transplacentally hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) fetus. Prenatal stress during the critical hypothalamic differentiation is related to decreased fertility of male offspring by an increase in the basal level of COR. This modification could induce long-term changes in the process of apoptosis in the testis. However, early postnatal handling increases maternal behavior and could reverse the effects caused by increased secretion of COR. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of early postnatal stimulation of male rats prenatal stressed by chronic immobilization during the last two weeks of pregnancy, on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis... |

The current annual consumption of insecticides in agriculture in Brazil is over three million tons. The exposure happens through food that is contaminated with toxic waste and respiratory and dermal absorption. Biological control with Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) has assumed increasing importance replacing the use of conventional insecticides. However, the tests used to justify approval for use and market release of Bt products, and the protocols used to assess the development of toxicity, are extremely superficial. In addition, more studies comparing effects between males and females and during pregnancy and lactation have not been conducted. Thus, the hypothesis tested in this study was if the administration of the XenTari® WG (Bacillus... |

The use of animals in scientific research is not recent. The rat has been used in experiments since before Christ and, in the XIX century, with the intensification of the research reports, the use of this species increased considerably. Although this fact happens, the literature regarding the heart of these animals is not very detailed and descriptive. The objective of this research is to study the macroscopic morphometric of several parameters that have not been described yet regarding the hearth of Wistar rats in different phases of their lives. Thirty-six adult male and female rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing 150-770 g were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups: 6 animals of the group I male-weighting 150-249g (I-M); 6 animals of the group I... |

Accidental envenomation caused by Tityus serrulatus scorpions is very common in Brazil and may result in serious cardiorespiratory alterations that are frequently fatal to children. In the present study, the effects of T. serrulatus venom on the cardiorespiratory system of recently weaned male Wistar rats were evaluated. Fifteen animals were distributed into three groups (n = 5). The control group A received 400 μL ultrapure water by subcutaneous injection, while the experimental groups B and C were injected with scorpion venom (100 and 450 μg, respectively, in 400 μL water). Electrocardiogram (ECG) traces were obtained prior to the experiment, at five-minute intervals up to 30 minutes after treatment. At 40 minutes after envenomation, the animals had... |

Scorpions are venomous arthropods of the Arachnida class and are considered relatives of spiders, ticks and mites. There is not any study about the biochemical effects of Androctonus crassicauda (Olivier, 1807) venom. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed at evaluating the toxicity of the venom from A. crassicauda, which is responsible for a number of deaths of infants, children and adults in tropical and subtropical countries. For this purpose, rats (n=35) were divided into seven groups of five animals each; venom solutions (250µg/kg) were subcutaneously injected into rats; blood samples were taken from each animal at various times; and serum biochemical parameters were measured (levels of total proteins, total bilirubin, albumin, globulin, urea,... |

Background Snake venoms are synthesized and stored in venom glands. Most venoms are complex mixtures of several proteins, peptides, enzymes, toxins and non-protein components. In the present study, we investigated the oxidative stress and apoptosis in rat liver cells provoked by Naja haje crude injection (LD50) after four hours. Methods Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups, the control group was intraperitoneally injected with saline solution while LD50-dose envenomed group was intraperitoneally injected with venom at a dose of 0.025 μg/kg of body weight. Animals were killed four hours after the injection. Lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide and glutathione levels were measured as oxidative markers in serum and liver homogenate. In addition, liver... |

Although it is a frequent accident in a few countries, scorpion envenomation during pregnancy remains scarcely studied. In the present study, the effects of repetitive maternal exposure to Buthus occitanus tunetanus venom are investigated and its possible embryotoxic consequences on rats. Primigravid rats received a daily intraperitoneal dose of 1 mL/kg of saline solution or 300 µg/kg of crude scorpion venom, from the 7th to the 13th day of gestation. On the 21st day, the animals were deeply anesthetized using diethyl-ether. Then, blood was collected for chemical parameter analysis. Following euthanasia, morphometric measurements were carried out. The results showed a significant increase in maternal heart and lung absolute weights following venom... |

We examined the effects of Amylomyces rouxii, which is a mold found in some fermented foods in Indonesia, on serum cholesterol and hepatic LDL receptor mRNA in rats. Rats were fed a 0.5% cholesterol-enriched diet with (A. rouxii group) or without (control group) 30g/kg A. rouxii for 4 wk. There were no significant differences in the body weight, food intake or liver weight among the groups. However, the weight of the cecum in the A. rouxii-fed group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The cecal pH in the A. rouxii-fed group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Cecal acetic acid, propionic acid and total SCFA concentrations in the A. rouxii-fed group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The serum... |

Calendula officinalis is a phytopharmaceutical believed to inhibit gastric emptying and to have hypoglycemic and gastroprotective effects. We aimed to study the putative effect of an infusion of Calendula officinalis on indomethacin-induced gastric lesions. 30 adult male Wistar rats, divided in 2 groups, received indomethacin 20 mg/kg through gavage. Group A (Study) further received 1 mL of 10 % doses of Calendula officinalis, and group B (Control) received saline, for 2 days. After this period, the stomachs were extracted and examined for lymphocytic and neutrophylic infiltrates, and for mucosal lesions such as ulcers and erosions. We concluded that Calendula officinalis did not significantly influence the appearance of such alterations in the... |
