The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between the placental retention time (PRT) and the reproductive performance following mating at the foal heat in Thoroughbreds. For this purpose, we interviewed 292 farmers over a period of 3 years with questionnaires evaluating foaling, expulsion of placenta and reproductive performance at the foal heat in 1,432 mares. The obtained data were later compared with a previous study of heavy draft mares. The average of the PRT of the 1,432 Thoroughbred mares was 58 ± 88 min (mean ± SD). The mean PRT of Thoroughbreds was significantly shorter than that of the148 min of heavy draft mares. The incidences of retained placenta (RP) occurring in the Thoroughbred mares were 5.2 and 4.0%, for over 3 and 4 hr after...

The present study aimed to assess the effect of polymorphisms in the tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) promoter (A/A, A/G and G/G) and exons (T/T, T/C and C/C) on immune function and reproductive performance in dairy cows. The occurrence of the first postpartum ovulation within 3 weeks in the cows with the TNF-α promoter A/G and G/G genotypes was higher than in the A/A group. Among the different TNF-α exon genotypes, the occurrence of early first postpartum ovulation was higher in the T/C and C/C genotype groups than in the T/T group. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TNF-α gene did not affect the rate of artificial insemination (AI) or duration from parturition to next conception (days open). The apoptosis rate of polymorphonuclear leukocytes...

In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. The occurrence of first ovulation, days to first artificial insemination (AI) and first AI conception rate were recorded. Nutritional status postpartum was evaluated by blood chemical analysis. Based on AUCglu changes from Pre21 to Pre10, cows were classified into either the AUC-up group (AUCglu increase, n=5)...

Factors associated with 56-day non-return rate in dairy cattle PAB
Fouz,Ramiro; Gandoy,Fernando; Sanjuán,María Luisa; Yus,Eduardo; Diéguez,Francisco Javier.
The objective of this work was to identify factors associated with the 56-day non-return rate (56-NRR) in dairy herds in the Galician region, Spain, and to estimate it for individual Holstein bulls. The experiment was carried out in herds originated from North-West Spain, from September 2008 to August 2009. Data of the 76,440 first inseminations performed during this period were gathered. Candidate factors were tested for their association with the 56-NRR by using a logistic model (binomial). Afterwards, 37 sires with a minimum of 150 first performed inseminations were individually evaluated. Logistic models were also estimated for each bull, and predicted individual 56-NRR rate values were calculated as a solution for the model parameters. Logistic...

Maternal and fetal effects after inhalation of the herbicide flumetralin Biological Sciences
Boneventi, Priscila; Baroneza, José Eduardo; Moreira, Camila Queiroz; Santos, Debora Cristina D. Meirelles dos; Salles, Maria José Sparça.
Farm workers at Brazilian tobacco plantations are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals and eventually became contaminated with these products. Flumetralin is a inhibitor of axillary bud growth on tobacco and the effects of gestational exposure should be investigated since many pesticides cross the placental barrier and cause birth defects. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal and fetal effects caused by inhalation of Flumetralin. Pregnant Swiss mice inhaled Flumetralin for 10 or 20 minutes on the seventh day of pregnancy. On the 18th day, animals were euthanized and subjected to laparotomy for removal of the uterus and embryos. The uterus was weighed and the embryos were examined. Fetuses of both treatments showed visceral changes in the...

Effect of body development from first insemination to first weaning on performance and culling until the third farrowing of Landrace x Large White swine females Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lesskiu,P.E.; Bernardi,M.L.; Wentz,I.; Bortolozzo,F.P..
The aim of this study was to verify the association of sow body weight development until the 1st weaning with reproductive performance, piglet production and culling rate until the 3rd farrowing in 196 primiparous sows using logistic regression models. Each 10kg increase in weight gain in the 1stpregnancy (OR= 0.63), weight at 1st farrowing (OR= 0.70), weight at the 1st weaning (OR= 0.73) or weight gain from the 1startificial insemination (AI) to the 1st weaning (OR= 0.67) decreased the percentage of primiparous sows with long weaning-to-oestrus interval - WOI (>5 days). An increasing lactation length and an increase in the number of weaned piglets were responsible for respectively decreasing (OR= 0.77-0.80, per day of lactation) and increasing (OR=...
