ABSTRACT: The Habanero hot pepper group is not well known in Brazil, despite its origin in the Amazon. Nevertheless, domestic and international markets have been increasing the demand for this type of hot pepper. The Brazilian agroindustry is interested in supplying part of this demand with high quality products and competitive prices, and it needs well-adapted cultivars. To fill this gap, Embrapa Vegetables developed the Habanero pepper cultivar BRS Juruti, which meets the demands of both the market for fresh fruit and the processing agroindustry of mash and sauces. Cultivar BRS Juruti has red fruits and yielded around 50 t/ha (36,000 plants/ha). Fruit pungency is circa 260,000 SHU and fruits have high content of vitamin C (122 mg/100 g). BRS Juruti is... |

For this research we used 15 day-old seedlings which were transplanted to 2 L pots and inoculated with 4,000 nematode eggs plus juveniles (J2). After 60 days, the root systems were removed and the number of galls and eggs evaluated and used to calculate the nematode reproduction factor (RF). The tomato cv. Santa Cruz was used as a susceptible control. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications. Averages were compared using the Tukey or Scott-Knott test at 5%. For lettuce, Salad Bowl (Mimosa type), Elizabeth and Elisa (Lisa) and Vera cultivars (crisphead), the number of galls and the RF for M. javanica were statistically higher than for the control, whereas, for the other vegetable crops, the highest number of galls and eggs... |

Powdery mildew, caused by Podosphaera xanthii, is an important disease of melon in the Brazilian Northeast. The objective of this work was to evaluate the reaction of families, lines and cultivars of melon to P. xanthii. Two experiments in simple lattice were carried out under field conditions in the municipalities of Mossoró and Baraúna to evaluate 144 families. In a greenhouse, an experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design to evaluate 19 lines and the cultivars Yellow Queen, Chilton and Hy Mark. Disease was assessed by a severity scale. There was genetic variability among families. The families 4, 5, 11, 14, 18, 23, 33, 42, 101, 112 and 140 were identified in both sites as resistant. The lines LOF-027, LOF-105, LPS-124, MEL-008 and... |

Lettuce is the most consumed leafy vegetable in Brazil. However, its production has faced increasing difficulties mainly due to the infestation of producing areas with Bremia lactucae, the causing agent of downy mildew, the worst disease in lettuce. The aim of this study was to identify B. lactucae races occurring in lettuce producing areas of São Paulo state, during 2008 and 2009. Lettuce leaf samples containing B. lactucae sporangia were collected in the major lettuce producing areas of São Paulo. Each sample was considered an isolate. After the multiplication of sporangia in the susceptible cultivar Solaris, with subsequent inoculation in the differentiating cultivars, the evaluations were performed on the same day of the first sporulation in the... |

ABSTRACT Intensive production of vegetables in greenhouses can increase the amount of inoculum of soil-borne pathogens, such as the root-knot nematode. Thus, in this study we aimed to evaluate the potential of Solanaceae as rootstocks resistant to Meloidogyne javanica nematodes as an alternative to tomato grafting. The experiment consisted of seven treatments: wild species joá-vermelho (Solanum capsicoides), joá-bagudo (Solanum palinacanthum), joá-bravo (Solanum viarum), jurubeba (Solanum spp.) and the commercial tomato cultivars Santa Cruz Kada, Batalha and Guardião. The analyzed variables were gall index; egg mass index; final nematode population; reproduction factor (FR) and reaction: susceptibility, resistance and immunity; fresh shoot and root mass... |

ABSTRACT Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) spreads mainly by vegetative propagation, and therefore this vegetable may have duplicate accessions in germplasm banks. The authors aimed to characterize morpho-agronomically the sweet potato germplasm from the Active Germplasm Bank (AGB) of Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS).The experiment was carried out at the Research Farm “Campus Rural da UFS”. The experimental design was a randomized block design, testing 73 sweet potato accessions with two replicates and four plants per plot. Morpho-agronomic traits of aboveground part and roots were evaluated. We observed that the leaf lobe type, the number of lobes per leaf, shape of central lobe, and general leaf shape were traits which provided the most variability... |

ABSTRACT Considering the economic importance of strawberry in Brazil, with a clear migration trend from the soil to innovative systems on substrates, it is fundamental to evaluate the available cultivars in the market regarding tolerance to pathogens with potential for infestation. The reaction of eight commercial strawberry cultivars (Festival, Camino Real, Camarosa, Oso Grande, Monterey, San Andreas, Aromas, and Albion) to Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus species was evaluated. Strawberry cultivars were maintained in individual pots with sterilized soil and inoculated with 5,000 eggs + second stage juveniles of Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita, M. javanica or M. hapla or 1,000 specimens of Pratylenchus zea or P. brachyurus per plant. The experiment was... |

Due to failures of infection after mechanical inoculation of begomovirus on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants, an efficient and reliable begomovirus inoculation method was developed using the whitefly vector (Bemisia tabaci). Virus acquisition was carried out using a 'Tube-cage', made of a polypropylene tube, containing one to two day-old whiteflies and a tomato plant apex infected with a begomovirus isolate. After 48 h of acquisition access period, inoculation was done using a 'Ring-cage', containing viruliferous whiteflies, attached to the abaxial side of the leaf of young tomato plants. 48 hours after acquisition, the whiteflies were eliminated and the inoculated plants were incubated for 28 days under greenhouse conditions. Three... |

ABSTRACT Bacterial wilt limits tomato production and resistant rootstocks could be important for the integrated management of the disease. Since there is an interaction between local bacterial strains and tomato genotype, this study aimed to evaluate 14 tomato rootstocks to bacterial wilt in the Mata mesoregion of Pernambuco state, Brazil. The rootstocks reaction to two sequevars of Ralstonia solanacearum and two of R. pseudosolanacearum was evaluated in four experiments carried out in the greenhouse using the completely randomized experimental design, with four replications composed of four plants each. Seven genotypes were selected to evaluate the reaction to bacterial wilt as rootstocks grafting in tomato plants ‘Tomini F1’ in a production area with... |

The number of tomato-infecting begomoviruses has increased in Brazil after the introduction of the polyphagous vector Bemisia tabaci biotype B. The Ty-1 locus, introgressed from Lycopersicon chilense, controls tolerance to species of the monopartite Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) complex in Europe and the Middle East. However, little information is available about the Ty-1 effectiveness against species of the bipartite Begomovirus complex occurring in Brazil. Heterozygous (Ty-1/ty-1) and homozygous (ty-1/ty-1) hybrids were evaluated for reaction to Begomovirus isolates under open field conditions in two growing areas in Central Brazil. Test plants were evaluated under natural inoculation with high vector pressure. Evaluation was done using a disease... |

ABSTRACT Habanero pepper is important in the international market and is becoming popular in the national market; however, few cultivars adapted and resistant to devastating diseases caused by the soilborne pathogens Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum (RP) and Phytophthora capsici (PC) are available in Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of Habanero-type advanced inbred lines, developed by Embrapa Hortaliças breeding program, to RP and PC. Although not required for the process of protection, registration and release of new cultivars, this information is important. CNPH 15.737; CNPH 15.740; CNPH 15.744; CNPH 15.745; CNPH 15.749 and CNPH 15.750 were inoculated with three RP and one PC isolates. Plants showing wilted leaves (RP) and stem... |
