Relationships between grain yield and accumulation of biomass, nitrogen and phosphorus in common bean cultivars Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Shoot biomass is considered a relevant component for crop yield, but relationships between biological productivity and grain yield in legume crops are usually difficult to establish. Two field experiments were carried out to investigate the relationships between grain yield, biomass production and N and P accumulation at reproductive stages of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars. Nine and 18 cultivars were grown on 16 m² plots in 1998 and 1999, respectively, with four replications. Crop biomass was sampled at four growth stages (flowering R6, pod setting R7, beginning of pod filling R8, and mid-pod filling R8.5), grain yield was measured at maturity, and N and P concentrations were determined in plant tissues. In both years, bean cultivars differed...

The growth response of roots to stress conditions is a strategy that allows the plant to either avoid the adverse conditions or to adapt to them. H an activities have resulted in the accumulation of some metals from certain concentrations have an adverse effect on plant growth. Among these, Chromiumumm (Cr) is a serious pollution caused by metal processing industries and leather tanning. To understand in detail the response of roots Cr(VI) stress, it was used an in vitro system with Arabidopsis thaliana utilizing three experimental conditions. (A) Plants germinated and grown for 6 days, without lateral roots, were transferred to media with different concentrations of Cr(VI). This allowed the evaluation as affecting the growth of the primary root to move...

Ecological aspects of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) parasitism in the Pantanal wetlands Acta Botanica
Lehn,Carlos Rodrigo; Salis,Suzana Maria; Mattos,Patrícia Póvoa.
Most studies on holoparasitic plants have focused on taxonomic or systematic issues. The objective of this study was to examine the ecological aspects of parasitism of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) in the Pantanal wetlands. Individuals of L. hypogaea were dug out by hand and the host trees were identified. Eighty-eight percent of host trees exhibited zoochory dispersal syndrome. Protium heptaphyllum and Cordiera sessilis represented 50% of the sampled trees. Both species are evergreen and are preferentially shade-tolerant species growing under the canopy of other trees. Fecal sample of collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) had seeds from both the host tree (Protium sp.) and the parasite L. hypogaea. We therefore propose the hypothesis that P. tajacu...

Diversity of metaxylem vessel elements in three Syagrus palms (Arecaceae) of different habits Acta Botanica
Pace,Marcelo Rodrigo; Botânico,Marli Pereira; Angyalossy,Veronica.
Vessel elements in Monocotyledons present morphological differences according to the organ where they occur. Usually such diff erences have been explained from an evolutionary perspective, with few data on how the vessel elements could be infl uenced by the diff erent functions of organs and the growth habits of the plants. To address this question, three vegetative organs of palms of the same genus, Syagrus, growing in similar environments, but with different habits, were analyzed. Accordingly, we aimed to detect whether the vessel elements would present similar features in all species or whether the vessel elements would change according to their different habits. We found that the width and type of perforation plates varied in the same way among all...

The Ca2+ pump inhibitor, thapsigargin, inhibits root gravitropism in Arabidopsis thaliana Biol. Res.
URBINA,DANIELA C; SILVA,HERMAN; MEISEL,LEE A.
Thapsigargin, a specific inhibitor of most animal intracellular SERCA-type Ca2+ pumps present in the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum, was originally isolated from the roots of the Mediterranean plant Thapsia gargancia L. Here, we demonstrate that this root-derived compound is capable of altering root gravitropism in Arabidopsis thaliana. Thapsigargin concentrations as low as 0.1 µM alter root gravitropism whereas under similar conditions cyclopiazonic acid does not. Furthermore, a fluorescently conjugated thapsigargin (BODIPY FL thapsigargin) suggests that target sites for thapsigargin are located in intracellular organelles in the root distal elongation zone and the root cap, regions known to regulate root gravitropism
