A model for evaluating beef cattle rations considering effects of ruminal fiber mass R. Bras. Zootec.
Henrique,Douglas Sampaio; Lana,Rogério de Paula; Vieira,Ricardo Augusto Mendonça; Fontes,Carlos Augusto de Alencar; Botelho,Mosar Faria.
A mathematical model based on Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) was developed and adapted in order to evaluate beef cattle rations at tropical climate conditions. The presented system differs from CNCPS in the modeling of insoluble particles' digestion and passage kinetics, which enabled the estimation of fiber mass in rumen and its effects on animal performance. The equations used to estimate metabolizable protein and net energy requirements for gain, net energy requirement for maintenance and total efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization were obtained from scientific articles published in Brazil. The parameters of the regression equations in these papers were estimated using data from Bos indicus purebred and crossbred animals...

Impact of dietary manipulation on nutrient flows and greenhouse gas emissions in cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Kebreab,Ermias; Strathe,Anders; Fadel,James; Moraes,Luis; France,James.
The growing global demand for meat and particularly in countries such as Brazil is expected to increase intensive animal production. Consequently the main pollutants of interest are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and greenhouse gases (GHG). Nitrogen can be a problem through nitrate leaching to water bodies, ammonia, and nitrous oxide emissions to air. Phosphorus loading in soil from manure application can be the main issue due to the tendency of P to accumulate in soil and leach to groundwater and rivers. The sources of agricultural GHG emissions include methane from enteric fermentation, manure storage and spreading, and nitrous oxide mainly from application of manure on land. Dietary manipulation has proven to be an effective tool to reduce...

Models of protein and amino acid requirements for cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Fox,Danny Gene; Fonseca,Mozart Alves; Cavalcanti,Luigi Francis Lima.
Protein supply and requirements by ruminants have been studied for more than a century. These studies led to the accumulation of lots of scientific information about digestion and metabolism of protein by ruminants as well as the characterization of the dietary protein in order to maximize animal performance. During the 1980s and 1990s, when computers became more accessible and powerful, scientists began to conceptualize and develop mathematical nutrition models, and to program them into computers to assist with ration balancing and formulation for domesticated ruminants, specifically dairy and beef cattle. The most commonly known nutrition models developed during this period were the National Research Council (NRC) in the United States, Agricultural...

Guerrero, Ana; Universidade de Zaragoza; Valero, Maribel Velandia; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Campo, Mari Mar; Universidad de Zaragoza; Sañudo, Carlos; Universidad de Zaragoza.
Nowadays consumers are highly interested in the quality of the products they eat, especially when this refers to meat. Consumption of meat from ruminant animals and its derivatives is on the increase, particularly in some countries such as Brazil, one of the main beef exporters in the world. Current analysis is a review of the different factors that affect meat quality in ruminants, with a focus on sensory analyses. Some factors throughout the entire meat chain are analyzed, or rather, from those that producers underscore to improve the quality of their products to those related with consumers' habits and beliefs. Most of the papers reviewed have been developed by researchers involved in the Meat Quality and Technology Group (University of Zaragoza and...
